Rapid advances in medicine coupled with increasingly aging societies have considerably changed the requirements of medical services. Today, the hospital sector must comply with more than norms and functions: Health care facilities are in a stage of transition from purely care-providing institutions to service-oriented health care providers. They are expected to offer environments that aid patients in their recovery and support them to stay healthy through state-of-the-art medical treatment on the one hand, as well as through a high quality of life and a sense of well-being on the other hand.

The projects introduced in this volume showcase the great variety of designs expressing the contemporary perception of hospitals whose architecture and design are integral components of healing and convalescence. Different conceptual takes meet the requirements of the growing and very diverse needs of the users, i.e. patients, doctors and nursing staff, as well as visitors. The presented hospitals all share a high degree of quality awareness and make the individual and the needs of the individual the key focus of the design.

The hospital of the future views itself as being a modern service provider: the patient is a customer who is wooed with a medical and care-focused service. Central aspect of this new thinking in the field of health care provision is the quality of life and the well-being of patients, staff and visitors. Architecture and design are becoming integral components of the approach to treatment and recovery. Special uses of light and colour, sustainability in the choice of materials and the flexibility of rooms: all form innovative concepts in contemporary hospital architecture – whether brand new building, conversion, or extension project. Hospital Architecture focuses its attention on high quality buildings in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Using texts, photos, design sketches and ground plans, the collection illustrates the shape of pioneering trends in contemporary hospital buildings. All of these architects have one thing in common: the endeavour to make the individual, and the needs of the individual, the key focus of their designs.

This indispensable reference book captures key recent developments in the rapidly evolving field of sustainable hospital architecture. Today’s architects must provide hospitals which enable high quality care for diverse patient populations in carbon neutral care settings, and this book succinctly considers what needs to be done in order to meet that challenge. The contemporary hospital is viewed in the context of global climate change, the planet’s diminishing natural resources and the spiralling cost of operating healthcare facilities.

Stephen Verderber considers the future of the hospital, and supplies a compendium of 100 planning and design considerations for the building type. The book includes twenty-eight case studies of built and unbuilt hospitals from around the world. These are grouped into five types - autonomous community based hospitals, children’s hospitals, rehabilitation and elderly care centres and hospitals, regional medical centre campuses, and visionary (unbuilt) projects.

Beautifully and extensively illustrated with many photographs, diagrams and floor plans, this is essential reading for all architects, planners, engineers, product manufacturers, clients, healthcare providers and government agencies involved in the present and future of sustainable healthcare environments.
