Urban design is based on planning and design principles that need to meet functional demands on the one hand, but on the other hand bring the design elements together into a distinctive whole.

Although designs are almost always dominated by the spirit of the times, the basic compositional principles are, for the most part, timeless. Designing Cities examines the most important design and presentation principles of urban design, using selected historical examples and contemporary international competition entries designed by practices including Foster + Partners, KCAP Architects & Planners, MVRDV, and OMA. At the core of the publication is the question of how the projects were designed and what methods and tools were available to the designer. In addition to the classic design that evolves in the mind of the designer, the repertoire is now expanding by means of new, computer-based methods, such as parametric design, in which variable parameters automatically influence the design and provide a range of possible solutions.

Three "Best Practice" examples, the Hafen-City Hamburg, Belval-Ouest in Luxembourg, and in the southern part of the city of Tubingen illustrate in the final chapter how award-winning urban planning concepts and designs can be realized successfully.

The Finnish architect Pekka Helin created his first firm in 1979. In his design approach, he draws in a specifically Scandinavian manner both on functionalism as well as on the organic architecture of Aalvar Alto, Viljo Revell, and Heikki Sirèn, but also Arne Erve. The building material wood plays a prominent role in this extremely clear architecture. The firm creates residential buildings -- often right next to water, where the structure's embeddedness in nature plays an important role in its sight lines -- but also office buildings, for example Nokia's corporate headquarters and the Finnish Modular Office, the tallest wooden office building in Europe. The firm's work also encompasses public buildings such as the Finnish embassy in Moscow and the concert hall and library in Espoo, and even town-planning projects, such as the master plan for the redesigning of the grounds of the former Oslo airport.

This book presents 24 of the firm's projects organized by typological task, with the focus on life in nature, urban public buildings, residential structures, and various types of workspace.

#books #architecture | Emergent architectural territories in East Asian cities

Emergent architectural territories in East Asian cities / Peter G. Rowe ; with drawings by Michael Spykens
Birkhäuser, Basel : cop. 2011.
207 p. : il. ; 28 cm

Biblioteca Sbc Aprendizaje A-711.4 EME

This book presents current developments in city planning and architecture in East Asia. It describes the many neighborhoods in which the region's large cities are modernizing or expanding with innovative structures and advanced construction projects.

It combines a typology of public structures with an analysis of the compositional principles of urban environments. Thus, it finally connects new developments in city planning with new developments in architecture, and considers examples such as CCTV, Lujiazui, Kansai Airport, Xinyi, Taipei 101, Chek Lap Kok, Cheonggyecheon, Roppongi Hills, Da Shanzi, Shahe, Omotesando, and Marina Bay from a new perspective.

And the new perspectives presented here are not just theoretical: some forty full-page bird's eye views prepared especially for this volume show these future urban settings in highly detailed images of breathtaking beauty. The result is a rich portrait of the coming together of global and local influences in non-Western countries.

With its systematic approach, this presentation by one of the leading international experts in the field is a reference work on a topic of central importance to the world of construction today.

Peter Hetherington, former regional affairs and northern editor of The Guardian, was a reporter at The Journal, Newcastle, covering local government – focussing on local politics and redevelopment – during the early 70s. Latterly he has written about planning, housing, regeneration and local government for The Guardian and other publications, and travelled extensively in Britain and overseas covering that field. He was a board member of the government's former Academy for Sustainable Communities, a member of its former urban sounding board, and is currently a vice president, trustee and policy council member of the Town and Country Planning Association.

ISBN 8423527972
Biblioteca Sbc Aprendizaje A-72.034 ARQ
