Hardly any other material unites such contradictory associations, stigmatized on the one hand, celebrated on the other – concrete is still in the spotlight. Its almost inexhaustible potential and ever new applications and possibilities make it a most valuable building material. Especially in combination with other building ware it displays an astonishing flexibility of utilization. Recent developments leading to new possibilities have inspired architects and designers to innovative and exciting solutions. The contemporary projects presented in this volume provide impressive testimony to the many faces of concrete and how much design potential it possesses. The publication shows with impressive images and distinct texts the ongoing relevance and inimitable fascination of concrete.

‘Wiel Arets: Autobiographical References’ opens up a unique and richly layered view of the architectural work and thinking of this internationally renowned Dutch architect. Underlying Arets’ practice, research and teaching is his concept of "a wonderful world", an optimistic outlook on how the world will evolve in the next 75 years. In addition to portfolios of 60 exemplary projects and designs by his studio, this book presents 5 lectures, and 5 debates between Arets and other thinkers and practitioners, as well as an extensive series of 10 interviews with Arets.

More than simply presenting his work alongside essays and project descriptions, ‘Wiel Arets: Autobiographical References’ reveals the interaction between Arets’ biography and his architectural thinking, teaching and design in the evolution of his distinguished career.

As well as being a congenial interview partner, Robert McCarter, Professor of Architecture at Washington University (St. Louis), provides an insightful concluding essay on Arets’ dialogical practice. The multi-layered content finds perfect form and expression in the exceptional book design and layout by Irma Boom Office.

Buildings for emergency services have evolved into an independent and fascinating architectural typology in the past two decades. Since the opening of the spectacular fire station for the Vitra factory by Zaha Hadid, police stations, fire departments and rescue services increasingly consist of architecturally amazing buildings. These are always an attractive challenge - when functional demands and high security measures are brought in sync with stylish modern design, the results reflect the highest levels of architectural skills. All three building types share the fact that they act as starting points for quick motorized dispatches. The featured buildings sometimes combine several institutions that are creatively situated under a single roof. The selected examples present the wonderful diversity of contemporary "emergency architecture". The range extends from the rural two-bay fire station via the metropolitan police headquarters to the helicopter rescue center.

Architecture for rescue services has come a long way in the past decade. Buildings for the police, fire brigades and ambulance stations have lost their often primitive and shed-like appearance and have begun to strive for recognition as an equitable architectural typology since Zaha Hadid's trailblazing Vitra fire station in Weil am Rhein. This certainly is a challenge because there are numerous conditions to be taken into account in terms of functionality and especially security. The examples chosen for this title show an amazing diversity of emergency architecture. The buildings presented frequently house more than one institution, using the latest technology and communication techniques to successfully combine functions under one roof. The projects included range from the rural two-bay ambulance depot to the police headquarters and the airport fire department.

Exploring the design of innovative building enclosure systems (or skins) in contemporary architecture and their precedents in earlier twentieth century modern architecture, this book examines the tectonics, the history and the influence of translucency as a defining characteristic in architecture. Highly illustrated throughout with drawings and full colour photographs, the book shows that translucency has been and continues to be a fertile ground for architectural experimentation.

Each chapter presents a comparative analysis of two primary buildings: a recent project, paired with a historical precedent, highlighting how architects in different eras have realized the distinctive effects of translucency. The included buildings span a variety of program types, ranging from a single-family residence, to a factory, to a synagogue. Whether it is Pierre Chareau’s glass-lens curtain wall at the Maison de Verre, Frank Lloyd Wright’s wall of stacked glass tubes at the Johnson Wax Research Tower, or Peter Zumthor’s use of acid-etched glass in a double-skin envelope at the Kunsthaus Bregenz, the included projects each offer an exemplary case study of innovations in materiality and fabrication techniques.

Today, among many contemporary architects, there is an engagement with new technologies, new material assemblies, and new priorities such as sustainability and energy-efficiency. A resurgent interest in translucency as a defining quality in buildings has been an important part of this recent dialogue and this book makes essential reading for any architect looking to incorporate aspects of translucency into their buildings.

Chronicles a rich and little-known array of architecture on the island, a hotbed of modernism from the thirties on. An essential reference for architecture buffs, historians, and everyone who lives on or visits Long Island today, this unique resource—the first illustrated history of Long Island’s modern architecture—is based on a survey conducted for the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA). It highlights the work within Suffolk and Nassau counties of a roster of twenty-five internationally renowned architects—among them Wallace Harrison, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer, Edward Durell Stone, Richard Neutra, William Lescaze, Gordon Chadwick for George Nelson, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Philip Johnson, Paul Rudolph, and Richard Meier.

Caroline Rob Zaleski’s research on the work of key figures in twentieth-century architecture; the relatively unknown aspects of their production; and their associations with clients, artists, and politicians is complemented by more than three hundred striking archival photographs, specially commissioned new photography, and plans. Zaleski documents the development of exurbia and the rise of visionary structures: residences for commuters and weekenders, public housing, houses of worship, universities, shopping centers, and office complexes. In this part architectural, part social history, she explains why modernism was embraced by Long Island’s civic, cultural, and business leaders—as well as by those who wanted to settle away from the city—during an epoch when open space was prime for development. An inventory of important architects, with their Long Island commissions by date and location, complements the main text.

By means of architectural “memory,” imaginary times and distant pasts and places have been reinvented by different approaches to the question of authenticity, some of which are based on fictions, as for example, in Walt Disney’s famous castle. The heart of this book is the study of three of Frank Gehry’s architectural projects. In these projects he creates fresh ubieties—ways of being in places—in a city where historical memory is absent, Los Angeles. The author posts that these projects are more than isolated designs but are in fact reflections on how to build a city in time. The author proposes a fresh perspective on Gehry’s project based on the idea that he calls the relatus, or narration. The author argues that the results have the structure of literary narration; that reality is stitched together with the thread of a cohesive argument. And while they of course do not re-create all aspects of “reality,” they do make up a coherent whole.

The work of Frank Gehry has been analyzed on the basis of 3 1980s' buildings in Los Angeles.
A Ph.D. thesis has been carried out by researcher Inaki Begiristain at the University of the Basque Country.
Elhuyar Fundazioa | EureAlert, 2011-12-20
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2011-12/ef-two122011.php

Iñaki Begiristain, a lecturer at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), did his thesis on the architect of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, but with the focus placed far away from this Basque city. In fact, he has analysed three buildings Frank Gehry designed in the county of Los Angeles in the 1980s: the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, the Edgemar Center and the Loyola Law School. The thesis is organised in an unusual way, rather like an essay. "It is a ‘relates’ made up of the pieces that were found," explains the researcher. In his view, that is how Gehry the architect creates; this is what he explains in his thesis: there is a ‘relates’ in these three buildings, or, to put it another way, an attempt to capture the passing of time. He submitted his thesis at the UPV/EHU with the following title: ‘Fikzioak eta relatus berrien eraikuntza. Frank Gehryren hiru proiekturen azterketa’ (‘Fictions and Construction of new Relatus. Study of three of Frank Gehry's projects’).

Begiristain explains that building in Los Angeles is about building without any context or references. In other words, the three buildings analysed are "projects that were started from scratch. In the midst of that empty space the project has to invent its location". In fact, that empty space is limited by a U-shaped ground plan, and there is a double entrance in the open part of that "U". What is more, Gehry makes use of the opening to create a new public space on the corresponding plot of land: the mesh structure at Cabrillo, the little square at Edgemar and a campus at Loyola. The similarities do not stop there, since the three projects look ordinary from outside, but from inside they are totally different. "They are buildings that face inwards. Those surfaces that are ordinary and continuous from the outside are completely divided up inside, they are made of many different materials and comprise elements that have all kinds of scales," the researcher points out.

Creating a relatus
As Begiristain explains, in the absence of references it is very common in the architecture of Los Angeles to seek inspiration in fiction or in history, and to use theme elements or resources that have to do with film sets. Yet Gehry creates the interiors of his buildings differently: "He provides the pedestrian with something like an architectural story, through a path made up of all kinds of elements." Although the works are designed by a single architect, they simulate heterogeneity. They represent the passing of time: instead of being a building started from scratch, instead of being built within a specific period of time, it looks as if the elements have been gradually added, that the works were executed in several phases and that the building is the outcome of a long process. Like football stadiums that gradually expand and are transformed. In short, as Begiristain points out in this thesis, Gehry creates a ‘relatus’ or story without having to invent a fiction for doing so.

Indeed, the architect resorts to his own catalogue, to his own origins to build up that story. That catalogue is rooted in the modern building tradition of California. "On the one hand, it is based on the industry of architecture and on contemporary construction techniques, and on the other hand, on the criticism of modern orthodoxy and in the relationship with 1960s' plastic artists. From his biography it is possible to understand where that formal catalogue springs from. At first sight, it can often be understood as a divertimento, but it has more consolidated foundations," the researcher points out.

The three buildings analysed suggest to Begiristain the passing of time, the burden of the past, memory, etc. So he has made a personal reflection in his thesis about other works that have awakened similar sensations in him and which belong to disciplines other than architecture. They are examples taken from all kinds of disciplines: the memories incorporated into the humanoids in the film ‘Blade Runner’, Nietzsche's writings on how excessive the weight of history can be on life... As in Gehry's architecture, these things that appear in films and literature are also elements that make up a route or ‘relatus’.

Guggenheim Museum
Begiristain has also compared the three buildings studied with Gehry's more modern works, like the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Unlike the Los Angeles projects, this time the architect did have a reference before getting down to work: the Salve bridge. "The building embraces the bridge and is anchored there," explains the researcher. Nevertheless, at the other end of the quay he detects a similarity with the California projects, in the place where he built "the stone fence", on the side that provides access to the slope up to the main entrance of the museum: "At the point where the scale starts to be another one, at that part at the front which at the time was a void without references, the fence opens and behind it the fragmented diversity of the programme is protected."

Iñaki Begiristain-Mitxelena (Donostia-San Sebastian, 1964) holds a degree in Architecture. He wrote up his thesis under the supervision of Joseba Zulaika-Irureta, professor at the Center for Basque Studies of the University of Nevada-Reno, and defended it at the Faculty of Architecture of the UPV/EHU. In fact that is where he works today as a lecturer in architectural projects. This is an individual piece of research produced by Begiristain at the UPV/EHU; he has spent two periods of time in Los Angeles where he gathered information for his thesis.

‘Earth Perfect? Nature, Utopia and the Garden’ is an eclectic, yet rigorous reflection on the relationship (historical, present and future) between humanity and the garden. Through the lens of Utopian Studies (the interdisciplinary field that encompasses fictions all the way through to actual political projects, and urban ideals; in a nutshell, addressing the human natural drive towards the ideal) Earth Perfect? brings together a selection of inspiring essays, each contributed by foremost writers from the fields of architecture, history of art, classics, cultural studies, farming, geography, horticulture, landscape architecture, law, literature, philosophy, urban planning and the natural sciences.

Through these joined voices, the garden emerges as a site of contestation and a repository for symbolic, spiritual, social, political and ecological meaning. Questions such as: "what is the role of the garden in defining humanity's ideal relationship with nature?" and "how should we garden in the face of catastrophic ecological decline?" are addressed through wideranging case studies, including ancient Roman Gardens in Pompeii, Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights, the Gardens of Versailles, organic farming in New England and Bohemia's secret gardens, as well as landscape in contemporary architecture.

Issues relating to the utopian garden are explored thematically rather than chronologically, and organised in six chapters: "Being in nature", "inscribing the garden", "green/house", "The garden politic", "economies of the garden" and "how then shall we garden?". each essay is both individual in scope and part of the wider discourse of the book as a whole, and each is lusciously illustrated, bringing to life the subject with diverse visual material ranging from photography to historical documents, maps and artworks.

Wood has always been a stong contributing factor in the creation of interesting architecture. Because of its special physical characteristics, its many possibilities of application and combination with other construction materials, since human beings began building houses, wood has been one of the main building materials. In addition, because of the increasing sensitivity for the protection of resources the ecological potential of wood as a renewable raw material wood has gained in significance. To build with wood has been for years and is still a trend topic, this volume is a road tour of contemporary wood architecture. The many possibilities for use of this natural building material are shown with texts, photos, facts and drawings, as well as the innovative construction techniques which have extended these possibilities. The architectural species diversity ranges from energy efficient passive homes to wide span supporting structures, to multi-story productions halls.
