[.en] The Elemental studio is headed by artistic director Alejandro Aravena, winner of the Pritzker Prize and director of the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016. The studio is based in the capital of Chile, Santiago, and is untraditionally composed of people with a variety of skills and abilities. Their analytical approach to architecture and urban planning has led them towards original solutions to social challenges, such as the housing shortage in Santiago’s economically disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Instead of designing cheap housing, Elemental builds “half houses” at the same cost and enables customers to build the other halves themselves. The combination of good design and the engagement of the owners creates more sustainable housing areas. In the series The Architect’s Studio the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art presents an exhibition on the Elemental studio, curated by Mette Marie Kallehauge and Kjeld Kjeldsen. The richly illustrated publication portrays Elemental’s working methods and work philosophy, as well as showing examples of their most important projects.

Led by Pritzker Prize–winning artistic director Alejandro Aravena (born 1967), the Elemental studio, based in Santiago, Chile, possesses a diversely skilled staff whose analytical approach has produced highly original solutions to social challenges such as the housing shortage in Santiago's poorer neighborhoods. Instead of designing cheap housing, Elemental builds "half houses" at the same cost and enables buyers to build the other half themselves. This combination of good design with the engagement of the buyers creates more sustainable housing areas. The studio works on both large and small scales in Chile and in the rest of the world; all projects bear the marks of their pragmatic approach. ‘Alejandro Aravena: Elemental’ portrays the company's working methods and provides examples of its most important projects.

[.en] Analysis of an unprecedented phenomenon. By 2020, some 400 Chinese New Towns will have been built, representing an unprecedented urban growth. While some of these massive developments are still empty today, others have been rather successful. The substantial effort on the part of the Chinese government is to absorb up to 250 million people, chiefly migrants from the rural parts of the country. Unlike in Europe and North America, where new towns grew in accordance to the local industries, these new Chinese cities are mostly built to the point of near completion before introducing people. The interdisciplinary publication, written by architects, planners and geographers, explores the new urbanistic phenomenon of the "Chinese New Town". Especially commissioned photographs and maps illustrate many examples of these new settlements.

This new publication is a comprehensive study of Soviet Modernism in Ukraine. The authors and architects, Oleksiy Bykov and Ievgeniia Gubkina, have studied modernism in architecture in depth over many years. In this 250-page book, they explore the uniqueness of modernist ob-jects in all its forms - from interior de-sign to city plans - across the entire ter-ritory of Ukraine and over three full dec-ades. Furthermore, this title explores the differences between the main concepts in the debate on late Soviet architecture, in which the term "brutalism" has, un-til now, been understood as a western phenomenon.

In recent times, Soviet architecture in Ukraine has been rather in vogue abroad. At home, however, it is a different story: due to various political and economic factors and the stigma that is attached to everything Soviet, many buildings from the Soviet period are not maintained or even destroyed. The Ukrainian authors Alex Bykov and Ievgeniia Gubkina have decided to fight to save modernist architecture. Based on large-scale research, this book offers a rethinking of postwar Soviet architecture, with Bykov’s photographs documenting buildings in their current state and Gubkina’s criticism and analysis giving an unexpected spin on the multi-faceted modernist architectural movement, putting it in its correct global, historical, and political context. Gubkina also offers a revision of the term Modernism, which is most widely used in Ukraine, and the terms brutalism and post-modernist architecture. This lavishly-illustrated title leaves us to question whether we should remain neutral to the steady destruction of these urban ruins and the attempt to wipe this legacy from our memory and whether this Soviet past that is portrayed is really past.

[.en] “Yigal Gawze’s photographs capture the abstraction, the simplicity and the optimism of early modernism in Tel Aviv. He distils the essence of the Bauhaus to bring it alive in a modern city and concentrates on the subtle effects of natural light upon architecture, a technique that the masters of the modern movement themselves applauded." Nonie Niesewand, design editor & author

The fragment - an essential part of the structure which carries within it the genetic code of the whole, is in the core of this visual inquiry depicting Tel Aviv’s White City. The encounter between a building style originating in Europe and the Mediterranean glare, is highlighted by the colour photography. While paying homage to the Bauhaus spi rit and the avant - garde photographers of the 1920s, it is also a tribute to past ideals and present renewal, enhancing the current relevance of the Modern Movement in an exceptional urban setting. The images add up to create a portrait of a place by reveal ing the poetic essence of its architecture and the role light takes in shaping it.

[.en] The Architectural Guide Australia presents over 200 projects in the vast island continent that is home to natural wonders, coastal settlements, and tropical climates up north. Each chapter, dedicated to one of the nation’s eight state capitals, presents buildings that represent the major moments in the country’s architectural history, from its colonial origins to the contemporary era. The book includes an introduction to Australia’s most influential architects as well as essays by Harry Seidler (1923 – 2006), John Gollings, and David Bridgman.

Seidler’s essay argues for the incorporation of sunlight and shadow, phenomena so distinctly characteristic of the country’s climate, into architecture both from an aesthetic and practical standpoint. Gollings offers a historical sweep of Australian architecture before identifying the three major architectural strands of contemporary Australia. Bridgman explores the challenges of designing in the hot-humid tropics in particular, outlining the climatic considerations that must be accounted for when building in those regions.

Each chapter also includes an interview with a prominent architectural practice active in the respective city. The architects offer their views on the characteristics of Australian architecture and comment on their own practice within this context. With its comprehensive maps, aerial photographs, and images, this book is the ideal companion for those exploring Australia.

The building is located in the gardens of a neoclassical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century. The competition programme proposed a cinema, auditorium, an exhibition gallery, and required that the surroundings be preserved as they were. According to the architect, “Work was not allowed to interfere with the garden. Omitting was more important than proposing, deleting was more important than designing, and simplicity more important than composition.” This monograph reflects his very minimalistic approach.

[.en] This book looks at ArtLab, an innovative facility in Lausanne, Switzerland, intended to bridge the gap between science and the humanities on a university campus. This superbly illustrated volume presents the ArtLab project, which highlights the intersection of science, art, and the public at the Lausanne Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Switzerland. Designed by the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, ArtLab is a symbolic place of art, culture, and technology. The project combines three structures: the first is a welcome area to learn about the university's research, the second structure is an exhibition space that hosts art installations, while the third pavilion houses the newly digitized Montreux Jazz Festival archives and a caf . The three pavilions are connected, constituting a single building with a folded roof, a topographical flow, and a hybrid steel and wood frame. ArtLab is located near buildings by SANAA and Dominique Perrault, forming a new heart for the EPFL campus. Kuma's building, originally entitled "Under One Roof," is an example of how innovative, problemsolving, and adaptive architecture is transforming the world.

Together, in the 1960s and early 1970s, they envisioned the future of architecture in ways that enthralled a generation. In an era defined by the space race, they developed a 'high-tech', lightweight, infra-structural approach that stretched far beyond known technologies or contemporary realities. They devised autonomous dwellings and focused on survival technology; they experimented with mega-structures and modular construction systems; they explored mobility through the environment, and the use of portable living capsules: all through the medium of an incredible series of drawings and models. Archigram's influence has been profound and enduring. They gave the High-tech movement its impetus; they inspired architects such as Renzo Piano and Norman Foster; and they laid the ground for the design of buildings such as the Pompidou Centre. This book catalogues Archigram's activities over fourteen years, together with commentaries by the architects and critics writing then and now. Edited and designed by Archigram member Dennis Crompton, it has been 40 years in the making.

This thoughtful yet radical design blends architecture and landscape in a succession of spaces that reveals a deep understanding of both the fundamental aspects of and changing attitudes towards death, burial and the journey of life. Rather than through explicit religious symbols, the sacral is represented by the universal power of nature and by Romantic notions of finding meaning in rediscovered nature. In doing so, Statie Stuifduin goes beyond the specifics of the building to explore new visions of what contemporary funeral architecture can be.

[.en] When the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1924, it was finally possible to publish the first of the Bauhausbücher that Walter Gropius (1883–1969) and Làszlò Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) had first conceived of in Weimar. The series was intended to give insight into the teachings of the Bauhaus and the possibilities it offered for incorporating modern design into everyday aspects of an ever-more-modern world. First in the series was Gropius’ International Architecture, an overview of the modern architecture of the mid-1920s and an early attempt to articulate what would come to be known as International Style architecture. In a brief preface, Gropius summarized the guiding principles he identified uniting the avant-garde around the world. But the real thrust of the book is visual, with an extensive illustrated section showing buildings in Europe and the Americas. According to Gropius, these illustrations show the “development of a consistent worldview” that dispensed with the prior decorative role of architecture and expressed itself in a new language of exactitude, functionality and geometry.

Published for the first time in English, this new edition of the first of the Bauhausbücher is accompanied by a brief scholarly commentary. Presented in a design true to Moholy-Nagy’s original, International Architecture offers readers the opportunity to explore the Bauhaus’ aesthetic and its place in the world as Gropius himself was trying to define them.

The following translation of Walter Gropius’ International Architecture (1925) is adapted from Kenneth W. Kaiser’s 1964 translation for his thesis at MIT. It is, to date, the only translation of the brief text which accompanies the photos and plans featured in the volume. All the images and pages reproduced here come from scans uploaded over at the excellent Monoskop archive. Here’s the full-text PDF of Gropius’ groundbreaking Internationale Architektur.

Further on, directly after the translation, there’s the original German text. Quite short, though not quite Miesian in its brevity. Of course, Gropius openly admits that the book’s primary function was intended to be visual. Enjoy!

International Architecture
Walter Gropius. Bauhaus Books 1. Weimar, 1925

Foreword
‘International Architecture’ is a picture book of the modern art of building. It will in concise form give a survey of the works of the leading modern architects of the cultured countries of the world and make the developments of today’s architectural design familiar.

The works pictured on the following pages carry beside their differing individual and national characteristics, common features that are the same for all countries. This relationship, which every layman can observe, is a sign of great significance for the future, foretelling a general will-to-form of a fundamentally new kind represented in all the cultured countries.

In the recent past the art of building sank into sentimental decorative conceptions of the aesthete,, whose goal was the outward display of motives, ornaments, and profiles taken mostly from past cultures, which were without essential importance to the body of the building. The building became depreciated as a carrier of superficial, dead decoration, instead of being a living organism. The indispensable connection with advancing technology (and its new materials and construction methods) was lost in this are many for each building problem — the creative artist, within the boundaries his time sets upon him, chooses according to his personal sensibilities. The work therefore carries the signature of its creator. But it is wrong to infer from this the necessity for emphasis on the individual at any cost. On the contrary, the will to develop a ‘unified’ world picture, the will which characterizes our age, presupposes the longing to liberate spiritual values from their confinement to the individual and to elevate them to ‘objective importance’. Then the unity of the arts, which leads to culture, will follow by itself.

In modern architecture the objectification of the personal and the national is clearly recognizable. A uniformity of the character of modern buildings across natural borders, to which peoples and individuals remain bound, caused by world trade and technology is invading all cultured nations. Architecture is always national, also always individual, but of the three concentric circles — individual, people, humanity — the last and greatest encompasses the other two. Therefore the title:

International architecture
Study of the photographs of this book will reveal that strict utilization of time, space, material, and money in industry and management decisively determine the factors of the physiognomy of the modern building-organism: exactly cut form, singleness in multiplicity, organization of all parts of the building for the functioning of the building complex, the street, and traffic, concentration on typical plan forms, their development and repetition. A new will is discernible, to design the buildings of our environment from inner laws, without lies or gaming, their sense and purpose elucidated by the functional tensions of their own building masses, with anything unnecessary that would mask their absolute form thrust off. The architects of this book affirm the contemporary world of the machine and its tempo; they strive for ever bolder means of design with which to overcome, with action and example, the suspended torpor of the world.
