[.en] Born in Barcelona in 1955, Enric Miralles established himself as part of the rising Spanish architecture scene of the late 1980s together with his first wife, architect Carme Pinós. From the mid-1990s he formed a new practice with his second wife, Benedetta Tagliabue, with whom he worked until his early death in 2000. This extensive tribute to Miralles and his all too short career covers the trajectory of his collaborations, solo works, writings, and more, following from projects such as the La Llauna School and La Mina Civic Centre, to an increasingly global portfolio including the Japan National Library, Hamburg Music School, Venice School of Architecture, and the Scottish Parliament.

[.en] When architects design a house for themselves, the often tense relationship between clients and builders is usually absent. That is why in many such buildings the architect-designer’s artistic stance and political position, preferences and antipathies, temperament and character are more pronounced than usual. Moreover the architectural theories, debates and trends of an epoch also leave their traces in them in a particular way. We encounter both attach- ment to tradition and commitment to the avant-garde, willingness to experiment and pragmatism, distinctive artistry and views shaped by the fact that a building is also a product of engineering. And last but not least, expressed in their houses are the personal life circumstances of the people concerned, or the messages the houses are meant to convey above and beyond their actual pur- pose: as a »manifesto«, as the »self-portrait« of the architect, but also as an advertising tool or as a sign of connection to specific milieus or positions.

Building for oneself has a special connotation under the condi- tions of migration and exile. Among the most prominent examples are the private homes of Rudolph Schindler in West Hollywood (1921/1922), Richard Neutra in Los Angeles (1932), Walter Gropius in Lincoln, Massachusetts (1937/1938), Ernst May near Nairobi (1937/1938), Bruno Taut in Istanbul (1937/1938), Ernö Goldfinger in London (1937/1939), Marcel Breuer in New Canaan, Connecticut (1947/1948 and 1951), Josep Lluís Sert in Lattingtown, New York (1947/1950) and Max Cetto in Mexico City (1948/1949).

What expression could voluntary migration or forced change of location find in these buildings? To what extent do the architects’ other buildings differ from such »homes of one’s own« in a foreign country, to use an expression borrowed and modified from Virginia Woolf?

The book is a collection of contributions by internationally renowned authors and examines not only the buildings themselves but also other aspects of the topic that have hitherto received little attention.

Burcu Dogramaci teaches art history at the Ludwig-Maximilians- Universität of Munich. Her research focuses on exile and migration, and 20th-century and contemporary art and architecture. Architec- tural historian Andreas Schätzke teaches at the Hochschule Wismar. Among his key research areas are 20th-century architecture and urban development, and migration and cultural transfer in the field of architecture and the visual arts.

[.en] This book is a compendium of 15 years of its practice modes, developed through 4 chapters that summarize the research based design takes of Archi-Union, and opening up arguments and conversations around topics such as technology, philosophy, human-machine collaboration, material, tectonics, among others. Founded by Philip F. Yuan, Archi-Union Architects is a pioneering architectural firm based in Shanghai. In addition to project accomplished and prizes awarded, Archi-Union made continuous exploration on how geometry, digital technology and material are integral to a provocative understanding of design process and realization. Germinated under this influence and initiated in 2015, Fab-Union Technology defines it's mission as the platform of research and fabrication. Structured under three major orientation: computational geometry, robotics and fab-lab, FU lays a research foundation for the design process of AU. By far, the two teams have succeeded in several projects, including West Bund Fab-Union Space (2015), Pond Society (2016), In Bamboo (2017), Cloud Village (2018).

[.en] The city as a creative human habitat. Architecture has always been engaged in a dialogue with its context, i.e. the city—a relationship often dominated by tension. The architectural avant-garde in particular is commonly understood in its opposition to the existing metropolitan terrain: it positioned the form of the individual building against an – assumed - urban formlessness. The publication explores this dichotomy and analyzes the works of important urbanists, ranging from August Endell, Karl Scheffler, Ludwig Hilberseimer and Reyner Banham to Rem Koolhaas and Bernard Tschumi. Thus The Good Metropolis develops a theoretical and historical framework for understanding the complex relationship between architecture and the city. Survey of seminal 20th century urban theorists Locations are Berlin, Chicago, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, New York and Paris A richly illustrated and passionate plea for the city as a human habitat.

The subject of this book is the productive tension between the city and architectural form. It seeks to reevaluate the relationship between these two realms in which architecture’s inherent predisposition toward form is often matched only by the city’s ability to avoid it. While design is defined by intention and deliberation, the urban environment frequently appears aimless and conflicted, even accidental, fostering a tendency to view urbanization as undermining and negating architecture’s effectiveness. This book, however, traces an alternative discourse of architecture’s relationship to the city. As the title “The Good Metropolis” suggests, I explore here the fascinations with the modern city expressed by the architectural avant-garde and beyond, revealing how the forces of urbanization often served as a stimulant for architecture’s spatial imagination. It considers so far overlooked courses of action within architectural modernism and twentieth-century urban theory that are not predicated on tectonic functionalism, technological inventions or such like but instead on architecture’s intimate relationship with the metropolis. I will argue that the city has been a predominant force (even if often unconsciously) within architectural discourse and that recognizing it as such will not only allow us to reconsider historical narratives but will also give us a better understanding of our current fascinations and anxieties in regards to urbanization.

While industrial cities of the nineteenth and twentieth century in Europe and the US were predominantly criticized as discontinuous, chaotic, irregular, and overwhelming—in other words, formless—this book examines positions that aimed to discover architectural intelligences in the city without form. The following chapters, therefore, attempt to open up a territory of connections that challenge the predominant historiography of architecture’s position to the city. After all, the urban discourse of the avant-garde has often been viewed in a historical lineage that travels from modernist urbanism to postmodern non-planning—the former critiqued the terrain of the industrial metropolis that was in need of restructuring through architecture and planning, while the latter’s acceptance of the existing or admiration of the historical city held modernist planning and architecture responsible for its failures. This historiography, however, cannot account for the continued fascination with urban formlessness throughout modernity, it cannot provide a coherent explanation of the emergence of a metropolitan architecture, and it gives us very few directives for understanding today’s possible engagements with the world of extreme urbanization. The intention of this book is, therefore, to outline an alternative trajectory—one that complicates the apparent opposition between planning and non-planning, between critique and embrace of the city, between form and the informal, or better, between architectural form and urban formlessness.

[.en] In this book, Neil Jackson presents a vibrant profile of Los Angeles architect Pierre Koenig, who ‘Time’ magazine said lived long enough to become “cool twice.” From the influences of Koenig’s youth in San Francisco and his military service during World War II to the Case Study Houses and his later award-laden years, Jackson’s study plots the evolution of Koenig’s oeuvre against the backdrop of Los Angeles.

The book is anchored by Jackson’s exciting discoveries in Koenig’s archive at the Getty Research Institute. Drawings, photographs, diaries, building contracts and more—many of which are being published for the first time—provide an expanded understanding of Koenig and additional context for his architectural achievements. An examination of Koenig’s Case Study Houses shows how he presciently embraced sustainable, ecologically responsible design. A new account of the Chemehuevi housing project in Havasu Lake, California, demonstrates the special role that teaching played in the development of his architecture. Over his fifty-year career, Koenig not only designed iconic houses but also directed their restoration, ensuring that his work could be seen and appreciated by future admirers of midcentury Los Angeles.

Neil Jackson holds the Charles Reilly Chair of Architecture at the University of Liverpool and is president of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain. This present book, building on his earlier writings on Pierre Koenig, developed from a Guest Scholar residency at the Getty Conservation Institute in 2013.

[.en] The 20th anniversary of the Vienna architecture office querkraft is being marked by the publication of a first monograph about its work to date. It features unconventional and poetic buildings and designs, underlain by critical questioning tasks and a pragmatism that does not contradict bold solutions. In addition to documenting querkraft's most important works, the book is full of anecdotes about its office history. The architects are unusually open, not only revealing the secrets behind two decades of friendly collaboration in their collective practice, but also granting insight into the professional reality of working as an architect. querkraft's current works include the first car-free Ikea furniture store in Vienna, a residential complex in Paris, and the Museum fur Konkrete Kunst in Ingolstadt.

[.en] ‘Twenty-Five Buildings Every Architect Should Understand’ is an essential companion to Simon Unwin’s Analysing Architecture, and part of the trilogy which also includes his ‘Exercises in Architecture: Learning to Think as an Architect’. Together the three books offer an introduction to the workings of architecture providing for the three aspects of learning: theory, examples and practice. ‘Twenty-Five Buildings’ focusses on analysing examples using the methodology offered by ‘Analysing Architecture’, which operates primarily through the medium of drawing.

In this second edition five further buildings have been added to the original twenty from an even wider geographical area, which now includes the USA, France, Italy, Mexico, Switzerland, Spain, Finland, Germany, Australia, Norway, Sweden, India and Japan.

The underlying theme of ‘Twenty-Five Buildings Every Architect Should Understand’ is the relationship of architecture to the human being, how it frames our lives and orchestrates our experiences; how it can help us make sense of the world and contribute to our senses of identity and place. Exploring these dimensions through a wide range of case studies that illustrate the rich diversity of twentieth and twenty-first century architecture, this book is essential reading for every architect.

[.en] The Fondation Louis Vuitton by Frank O. Gehry rises from the Bois de Boulogne as a new landmark in the Parisian skyline. Gehry's dynamic architecture is both glittering and multifaceted: is it a sailing vessel, an iceberg, or a sea monster? It fascinates with its wealth of references and, at the same time, escapes any clear-cut definition. Three outstanding representatives of different generations of art history, James S. Ackerman (), Irving Lavin, and Horst Bredekamp have together paid a visit to the Fondation Louis Vuitton. They explore the building in three richly illustrated essays that try to fathom the floating architecture of the "magician" Gehry in the context of both art and architectural history.

[.en] Josef Albers is widely recognized as a crucial figure in 20th-century art, both as an independent practitioner and as a teacher at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College and Yale University. Albers made paintings, drawings and prints and designed furniture and typography. Arguably the least familiar aspect of his extraordinary career was his inventive engagement with photography, only widely known after his death, including his production of approximately 70 photocollages that feature photographs he made at the Bauhaus between 1928 and 1932. These works anticipate concerns that he would pursue throughout his career--the effects of adjacency, the exploration of color through white, black and gray, and the delicate balance between handcraft and industrial and mechanical form. Albers's photographs were first shown at MoMA in a modest exhibition in 1987, when the Museum acquired two photocollages. In 2015 the Museum acquired ten additional photocollages, making its collection the most substantial anywhere outside the Albers Foundation. This publication reproduces each of the photocollages Albers made at the Bauhaus, presenting the scope of this achievement for the first time. An introductory essay by Sarah Hermanson Meister situates them within the contexts of modernist photography, the Bauhaus ethos and of Albers's own practice.

[.en] Architecture creates complex spatial situations that are the subject of urban design. Design uses a repertoire of specific architectural means in a creative way, resulting in cities that can be lived in and perceived in their three-dimensional experience. The current book, an extended new edition of Architecture of the City (2016), describes the repertoire with which architecture and design regain an entry to urbanistics. It pleads for an "architectonic turn" in urbanistics - a demand to finally comprehend the city architecturally: the issue is not just about buildings in the city, but about architecture of the city as a whole, as is clearly expressed in the new title of ‘City as Architecture’.

[.en] Viewing architecture and urban development from the perspective of building contractors is a much neglected topic to date in architectural and art history. If mentioned at all, they are often even seen as potential adversaries of the architects, as their actions are allegedly determined solely by the maximisation of returns. Artistic or social aspects of building therefore supposedly have no note-worthy importance for them. However, it is the determined entrepreneurial and often very creative spirit of the contractors that allows the constructional realisation of architectural ideas for buildings. In view of this, this book is dedicated to the multi-faceted actions of six selected building contractors who were active when Berlin flourished to become a world city. The compact articles about their life and work also seek to illuminate their far-reaching, but largely unknown influence on the development of the cityscape and the architecture of Berlin.
