Se contempla la posibilidad de alumbrar nuestro camino hacia un anhelo que tenemos como seres humanos. El maestro es alguien que con su actitud impulsa la Ley de la Expansión y sirve como medio para incorporarnos a ella, abandonando la reducción propia de determinadas formas mentales…Marsilio Ficino, el preceptor de Lorenzo de Médicis, escribió a uno de sus discípulos: “Se necesitan astucia y discernimiento ya que la liebre se esconde en una pequeña mata de hierba. Lo mezquino se esparce con facilidad mientras que lo útil se reduce a lugares muy concretos”. Saber situarse cerca de estos lugares es la condición de cualquier aprendizaje.

José Manuel López-Peláez. Nace en Madrid en 1945 y cursa estudios en el Instituto Ramiro de Maeztu, donde muy pronto abona su cuota como socio del club Estudiantes. Realiza el selectivo en la Universidad Complutense e ingresa en la Escuela Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid, cursando los cinco años de proyectos con Rafael Echaide, Julio Cano Lasso, Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza, Ramón Anibal Álvarez y Rafael Moneo. En 1971 inicia su labor como profesor de Elementos de Composición en la ETSAM, y ese mismo año obtiene el Premio Nacional de Arquitectura. Es cofundador del estudio de arquitectura que más tarde será el actual equipo Frechilla & López–Peláez, cuya labor ha sido premiada y publicada en varias ocasiones. Alterna su trabajo como arquitecto con la reflexión teórica y la elaboración de textos. En 1981 comienza a trabajar en su tesis doctoral sobre la arquitectura de Gunnar Asplund, que lee a principios de 1998, obteniendo el Premio Extraordinario de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Obtiene el premio en el segundo Concurso de Tesis Doctorales de la Fundación Caja de Arquitectos que se edita en el nº 11 de la Colección Arquithesis. En 2007 publica una selección de textos propios en la Colección La Cimbra, nº 4, con el título “Maestros Cercanos” en 2007. Actualmente es Catedrático del Departamento de Proyectos en la ETSAM.

Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza. Navarro, de Cáseda (1918). Casado con María Felisa Guerra en 1957, y con siete hijos. Hijo de arquitecto, de familia numerosa, es el mayor de nueve hermanos, dos de ellos brillantes ingenieros de caminos con lo que discute, aprende y se compara, sobre la matemática y el número. Estudia arquitectura en Madrid donde acaba en 1946 (premio Aníbal Álvarez al mejor expediente académico), y de sus años de carrera recuerda mucho a Torres Balbás y a Modesto López Otero. Viaja con una beca a Estados Unidos en 1948. Este viaje al continente americano es fundamental en su trayectoria. A su regreso inicia la labor docente a la que se dedicará toda su vida; las mañanas transcurren en sus clases de Proyectos hasta bien entrada la hora de comer, y las tardes y noches en su estudio. Con gran ansia de aprender muestra admiración por todo y así sabrá de literatura, poesía, geometría, filosofía, navegación a vela, coches, motos, barcos, viajes… De gran habilidad manual, confecciona todas las maquetas de su estudio a gran velocidad, además de reparar cualquier cosa que se le pusiera por delante. Muy polemista, es partidario de la transmisión oral de sus conocimientos y por medio de las obras de arquitectura. La mayor parte es fruto de concursos ganados (centro comercial en Vigo— en construcción —, centro cultural en Villaviciosa de Odón, museo de Las Palmas, palacio de festivales de Santander, viviendas en la M—30, Facultad de ciencias de Córdoba, sede del Banco de Bilbao en Madrid, basílica de Aránzazu…) Es importante en su vida la relación con el escultor Jorge Oteiza, con el que además colaborará en diferentes proyectos (Fundación Oteiza en Alzuza, Centro Cultural Alhóndiga, capilla en el Camino de Santiago, la comentada propuesta en Aránzazu…), y con el promotor navarro Juan Huarte (Torres Blancas, Ciudad Blanca en Alcudia…) Muy interesado en la vivienda social (viviendas experimentales en Carabanchel, Batán, Entrevías…), en la casa (para Arturo Echevarría, Juan Huarte, en Durana, Talavera de la Reina…) y en la villa (villa Fabriciano). Entre sus edificios institucionales también se debe recordar el edificio Torretriana en Sevilla y la Universidad Pública de Navarra en Pamplona. En su estudio han trabajado brillantes arquitectos y grandes amigos: Rafael Moneo, Juan Daniel Fullaondo, Paco Alonso, Javier Vellés, Alfonso Valdés, José Carlos Velasco, María Luisa López Sardá, Martínez—Garrido, Ricardo Aroca… y muchos más. Catedrático de Proyectos III y Fin de Carrera en la Escuela de Arquitectura de Madrid, deja una profunda huella entre sus profesores y alumnos. Consideraba un motivo de satisfacción haber ejercido de jurado en más de cien concursos de arquitectura, en la mayoría de ellos a propuesta de los concursantes. Recibe la Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las bellas Artes (1987) y el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes (1993), entre otros. No deja de trabajar hasta su fallecimiento en Madrid en julio del año 2000.

[.es] Si algo he aprendido después de tantos años de dedicación a estos temas es que todo intento de construcción teórica en nuestro ámbito debe, de entrada, asumir su papel auxiliar, su condición secundaria, su supeditación a las obras, que son las verdaderas depositarias del conocimiento tanto en arquitectura como en cualquier otra actividad artística. Ese carácter auxiliar que le atribuyo a la teoría en el campo del arte, no disminuye en nada su importancia, ni desmiente su valor decisivo. Es, exactamente, como la cimbra que hace posible la construcción del arco: una vez cumplida su misión desaparece y, por tanto, no forma parte de la percepción que tenemos de la obra acabada, pero, en cambio, sabemos que ha sido un paso obligado e imprescindible, un elemento necesario para erigir lo que ahora vemos y admiramos. 

Juan Antonio Cortés Vázquez de Parga se licencia en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid en 1973 y desarrolla su primera práctica profesional en el estudio de Rafael Moneo. Entre 1978 y 1980 realiza estudios de Master con Colin Rowe en el College of Architecture, Art and Planning de Cornell University (Master of Arts en Historia de la Arquitectura y del Desarrollo Urbano). 

Durante los años ochenta trabaja como profesional independiente al mismo tiempo que imparte docencia en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid como profesor asociado de Dibujo Técnico y Composición Arquitectónica. Obtiene el título de Doctor en Arquitectura en 1982. Ha sido Catedrático de Composición Arquitectónica de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Valladolid desde 1989 hasta su jubilación en 2015. 

Sus publicaciones se centran, fundamentalmente, en la arquitectura moderna y contemporánea, en especial en sus aspectos compositivos o morfológicos. Ha sido autor de varios libros, coautor de libros colectivos y catálogos de exposiciones, así como de numerosos artículos, proyectos y obras de arquitectura en revistas académicas y profesionales: Arquitecturas Bis, Arquitectura, El Croquis, Arquitectura Viva, Anales de Arquitectura, DPA, Cuadernos de Proyectos Arquitectónicos, Ars Magazine, Revista de Occidente, etc. Parte de los artículos publicados en revistas han sido recopilados en los libros: ‘Escritos sobre arquitectura contemporánea, 1978-1988’ (1991), y ‘Lecciones de equilibrio’ (2006). 

Se pueden destacar los siguientes libros: ‘Comentarios sobre dibujos de veinte arquitectos actuales’ (escrito en colaboración con Rafael Moneo, 1976); ‘La estabilidad formal en la arquitectura contemporánea’ (1991); ‘El Racionalismo madrileño. Casco antiguo y Ensanche. 1925-1945’ (1992); ‘Nueva consistencia. Estrategias formales y materiales en la arquitectura de la última década del siglo XX’ (2003); ‘Modernidad y Arquitectura. Una idea alternativa de modernidad en el arte moderno. Modernity and Architecture. An Alternative Idea of Modernity in Modern Art’ (2003); ‘Gobierno Civil de Tarragona, 1957-1964. Carlos Martí Aris. Nació en Barcelona el 10 de junio de 1948. Cursó los estudios de Arquitectura en la ETSAB, titulándose en 1972, pero su verdadera escuela fue la redacción de la revista 2C Construcción de la Ciudad de la que fue subdirector hasta 1985, año en que dejó de editarse. El Grupo 2c, aglutinado en torno a la carismática personalidad de Salvador Tarragó, tomó como principal referencia la figura intelectual de Aldo Rossi, aunque los 22 números editados muestran un campo de intereses mucho más amplio que va desde la casa sevillana o el territorio véneto hasta la obra de Cerdá, Torres Clavé o Sostres. El último número, «la línea dura», fue un beligerante alegato contra el posmodernismo que entonces triunfaba en casi todos los frentes.

El año 1976 fue para él decisivo, marcado por dos experiencias que dejaron huella: los siete meses de estancia en la región nororiental de Argelia formando parte de un grupo dirigido por Emilio Donato, para proyectar seis «villages agricoles pour la revolution agraire»; y la participación en el Primer SIAC de Santiago de Compostela, momento álgido de la tendencia liderada por Rossi. Poco después se incorporó a la Escuela de Arquitectura de Barcelona como profesor de Proyectos, dentro del equipo coordinado por Raimon Torres. A partir de entonces la docencia se convierte en su principal dedicación, que hace compatible con el trabajo profesional en asociación con Antonio Armesto.

Entres sus libros cabe destacar Las variaciones de la identidad. Ensayo sobre el tipo en arquitectura (1990), Silencios elocuentes (1999), Las formas de la residencia en la ciudad moderna (1991) y Santiago de Compostela. La ciudad histórica como presente (1996). Ha sido el impulsor de iniciativas editoriales como la colección Arquitectura—Teoría de Ediciones del Serbal, la colección Arquia/tesis de la Fundación Caja de Arquitectos o la revista DPA del Departamento de proyectos de la UPC. Sus actuales temas de investigación son, entre otros, Lugar público y ciudad contemporánea y La arquitectura del cine. Estudios sobre Dreyer, Hitchcock, Ford y Ozu (en colaboración con José Manuel García Roig).

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) took his first major trip to New York in 1909, fleeing a failed marriage and artistic stagnation. Residential designs are at the heart of the practice, which now encompasses commercial and institutional projects. Sixteen houses are presented in the book, the majority in Southern California and others near San Francisco and Houston. These designs are characterized by the fusion of powerful, simple forms, with the cultural, climatic, and contextual particulars of place. Accompanying the drawings and luxurious color photography are sketches and source material that reveal the genesis of the design as well as the completed project. As Ehrlich says, “Blurring the boundaries between the built and natural environment, our designs merge California modernism with vernacular design elements. Through details and materials, we maximize the home owner’s connection with the site and natural surroundings.”
