[.en] The general reading public is likely to think of architecture as buildings. But, with this book, Robert Steinberg would like to help readers understand that architecture shapes lives. Architecture can help communities integrate and thrive. Architecture can touch us, influencing how we feel, and how we interact with others. In short, architecture can fundamentally improve our quality of life.

As a young graduate architect fresh from Berkeley, Steinberg began to discover the potential of architecture to shape communities. Working with his father, an architect who had studied with Mies van der Rohe (and whose father was also an architect), one of Steinberg’s first projects was to draft and redraft a parking garage in downtown Silicon Valley, CA. As he mediated between the two architects in charge of the project―his father and the city architect―he noticed that with each evolution, the garage became more beautiful and refined. And with each improvement, this garage became more able to succeed in the goal of reviving the dying downtown core of Silicon Valley.

The garage was a huge success, and Steinberg began to codify what he had learned. Thanks to the garage, he wrote the first of what would become the 9 Realities of Architecture: Architecture is the Pursuit of Perfection ― a magnificent take-away from a humble parking garage project. As Steinberg eventually rose to become CEO of his firm and grew it into a global practice with six regional offices including Austin and New York, and a major office in Shanghai, he used his drive for creating thriving communities to eventually touch the lives of countless people around the world.

[.en] This book arose from two observations: that building design in the first decades of the 21st century accepts and pursues some increasingly odd and disturbing trends; and that there seems to be insufficient architectural criticism that calls these trends to account. Several factors appear to be behind these trends. Remarkable advances in the power of computer programming, permitting the simulation, manipulation and documentation of complex and continuously varying surfaces and volumes are surely one factor, opening the door to design opportunities that are unprecedented and have thus not stood the test of time. Another powerful factor would be the combination of wealth polarisation and the growing influence in the modern world of authoritarian regimes. The latter have the power to unilaterally call for huge projects of untested design merits. Also the proliferation of the ultra-rich in the modern world -oligarchs, sheiks, emperors of tech- has likewise facilitated the proliferation of often bizarre architecture that serves ego far more than the marketplace.

Green Obsession offers a path to be taken, a hard but still necessary paradigm shift –even for architecture and urbanism– that aims to give a voice to this much needed ecological transition.

This book aims to unveil the processes and the complexity involved in the search for a new kind of urbanism, while raising questions and opening old wounds related to the relationship between the human species and Nature and finally putting these fragments together to create a portrait of our era. We need to conceive cities as new green catalysts. Now more than ever, it is essential to act together as separate individuals and professionals, joining the cause as members of the global community with a shared environmental strategy. [.en] In 1962, the architecture practice Ponti Fornaroli Rosselli was commissioned to design and build part of the Ministries area of the new capital of West Pakistan, Islamabad, which was under construction according to Constantinos Doxiadis and Robert Matthewʼs master plan. Fifteen hundred architecture drawings and less than two years later, the buildings were completed. At some moments, five thousand workers were on site at the same time. Project manager Alberto Rosselli declared that the idea was not to transfer their Western knowledge to Pakistan, but to create a new Pakistan.

Moved by this incredible project, where the personal stories of the Ponti and Rosselli families crossed paths against a backdrop of architectural and political history, Giovanna Silva traveled to Islamabad in 2020 with Paolo Rosselli, nephew of Gio Ponti and son of Alberto Rosselli. It was a journey through architecture, personal memories, and a city built in the desert as a future capital of a new world, against the beautiful scenary of the Margalla Hills.

Silvaʼs photographs show the buildings in their everyday public function, with a focus on the spaces as performed by their users. The book also features archival images of the building site and construction, and a narrative text by Paolo Rosselli tracing the story of the project and his reactions during his first visit to his father’s work in Islamabad.

Cada uno de estos tres temas es introducido por tres puntos de vista de expertos poniendo en perspectiva una selección de proyectos en relación con el tema. Cada sitio es presentado por una entrevista del representante en torno a los temas de las Ciudades Vivas y sus visiones sobre el metabolismo y la inclusión, dando una mejor comprensión de los problemas locales. Pline l’Ancien rapporte que le peintre grec Apelle (ive av. JC), le premier, en imitant le tonnerre, la foudre et les éclairs, peignit «cela qui ne peut être peint», posant d’emblée la question de la figurabilité des éléments instables par nature et donc des «limites du peindre». Comment représenter le vent? Comment le signifier, l’écrire, le décrire? C’est aux solutions que les artistes ont apportées à ce paradoxe d’un vent invisible mais néanmoins bien réel, vécu et éprouvé, que ce catalogue est consacré. L’histoire racontée ici chemine entre des artistes aux prises depuis des siècles avec ce désir de vent et l’aspiration à en exprimer les puissances expressives, au fur et à mesure que la compréhension scientifique de ce phénomène météorologique s’affine, et que les pratiques et les mediums évoluent.

[.fr] L’histoire du soin, et l’histoire des lieux du soin qui l’accompagne, est une histoire de soutien ; l’histoire des lieux et des architectures qui nous tiennent et nous soutiennent, plutôt qu’ils nous détiennent ou nous contiennent - même si l’histoire de ces lieux-là, ceux contenant plutôt que tenant, est à raconter en même temps car c’est en fait souvent la même. Plusieurs des exemples présents dans ce livre illustrent cette ambivalence, à l’image d’un bucolique sanatorium construit dans la forêt du Vexin dans les années 1930, et transformé quelques années plus tard en camp d’internement.

Ce livre rapporte, en sept temps complémentaires et dont l’ordre ne compte pas tellement, sept dimensions de l’histoire des relations entre soin, ville et architecture. Il est question de distances d’abord, entre la santé et la maladie, et entre la ville et ses lieux de soin ; puis d’éléments, c’est-à-dire des territoires qui sont soignants (ou non soignants) avant d’être de l’architecture ; de formes ensuite, à savoir celles que prend l’hôpital et plus généralement l’institution du soin ; et de frontières, celles traçant tant bien que mal les limites des gestes et des lieux du soin, du plus intime au plus public ; il s’agit en suivant de nécropoles, pour parler du soin que nous portons aux morts ; d’hétérotopies, ces architectures alternatives dans lesquelles (et grâce auxquelles) s’inventent d’autres formes de soin ; d’inhabitables enfin, c’est-à-dire de ces territoires malades dans lesquels l’architecte doit se résoudre à « prendre en réparation le monde, par fragments, comme il lui vient », pour paraphraser Francis Ponge. Mais comme chez le poète, il est possible que cette réparation n’ait rien d’un renoncement, qu’elle soit au contraire une action de reconstitution de la possibilité d’habiter le monde.

Chacun des chapitres s’appuie par ailleurs sur deux contributions d’auteurs invités, issus de différents champs disciplinaires, dont les textes viennent s’insérer dans le fil, pour approfondir un point particulier. Enfin, tout cela est complété par le portrait de neuf lieux franciliens, qui sont des productions archétypales du soin (et du non-soin) comme principe architectural et urbain ; neuf lieux mentionnés déjà dans le contenu des sept chapitres mais dont l’histoire vaut d’être racontée un peu plus en détail tant ils incarnent avec force toute la complexité de l’histoire.

Hoy asistimos a un conjunto de palacios islámicos y cristianos que conviven con áreas arqueológicas, huertas y jardines de diferentes épocas y estilos. Un jardín de jardines de la historia donde es posible reconocer jardines medievales islámicos junto a otros renacentistas, románticos, regionalistas o eclécticos. La riqueza y singularidad de estos espacios verdes ofrecen un verdadero catálogo de jardinería histórica, muestra de la pervivencia de tradiciones de origen islámico y de los modelos europeos introducidos por la monarquía española durante los siglos XVI al XIX. Más tarde, se incorporaron en el primer tercio del siglo XX diseños concebidos a partir de las teorías de la restauración moderna basadas en la utilización de la vegetación y otros diseños de jardín que recrean formas procedentes de la arquitectura y patios islámicos medievales. La historia siempre ha mostrado la Alhambra como lo que es, una joya de la arquitectura morisca. Pero el monumento se proyecta en otras dimensiones no tan conocidas –o menos estudiadas–. Es el caso de los jardines, que forman parte del 'concepto' de la Alhambra desde sus orígenes, en el siglo XI, y que también conforman un elemento central en las sucesivas ampliaciones, construccciones y adhesiones acometidas durante más de novecientos años.

De esto va 'Los jardines de la Alhambra', un libro donde María del Mar Villafranca y Juan Domingo Santos analizan, desde la perspectiva de una historiadora del arte y un arquitecto, los valores de toda la superficie verde que hay de murallas hacia adentro, pero también de murallas hacia afuera, especialmente el Bosque de la Alhambra y la Dehesa del Generalife. La presentación de esta obra, editada por Comares, tendrá lugar en los Jardines del Carmen de la Victoria este miércoles a las 20.30 horas. El volumen aporta nuevos dibujos, planimetrías inéditas y fotografías de extraordinaria calidad.

«'Los jardines de la Alhambra' –dice Villafranca– es el resultado de una reflexión a lo largo del tiempo». Una reflexión plasmada en un título de trescientas páginas que empezó a gestarse en 2017 y que finalmente verá la luz cinco años y una pandemia después. «Los jardines, las huertas y las dehesas son muy valorados por los visitantes, pero quedaban un tanto marginados en la historiografía», reflexiona Villafranca, quien destaca la visión paisajística y holística de 'Los jardines de la Alhambra' desde el prisma de dos personas que aúnan la doble condición de granadinos y de profesionales con una mirada de la Alhambra que va más allá del mero interés.

María del Mar Villafranca fue directora de la Alhambra entre 2002 y 2015. Entre sus grandes logros cabe destacar la restauración del Patio de los Leones y la redacción del plan director, que ha estado vigente hasta hace pocos años. Mientras que Juan Domingo Santos ha desarrollado diversos proyectos de intervención en la Alhambra. Además, en 2011 ganó el concurso internacional de ideas Atrio junto a Álvaro Siza para adecuar los accesos a la Alhambra.

'Los jardines de la Alhambra' contiene una serie de pensamientos en una doble dirección. Por una parte, acerca del papel creativo que desempeña la naturaleza en la planificación y la construcción de la ciudad palatina y su implementación en el territorio. Y por otra parte, acerca también de la importancia que tuvieron los jardines en la corte nazarí, su evolución, su estado actual y lo que ha pervivido de ellos en el tiempo.

«Un jardín de jardines –señalan desde la editorial– donde es posible reconocer los jardines medievales islámicos junto a otros renacentistas, románticos, regionalistas o eclécticos». «La singularidad de estos espacios –añaden– muestra la pervivencia de tradiciones de origen islámico y de los modelos europeos introducidos por la monarquía española durante los siglos XVI al XIX».

«La Alhambra es un microcosmos de jardines dentro de jardines»
El arquitecto Juan Domingo Santos es coautor de 'Los jardines de la Alhambra' junto a Mar Villafranca. «Siempre se ha dicho que la Alhambra es la representación del jardín del paraíso en la Tierra, pero nunca he encontrado un libro que explique esta visión cultural y paisajística», señala Juan Domingo Santos. «Hemos dibujado todos los jardines y es maravilloso, ya que te das cuenta que estamos ante un microcosmos de jardines dentro de jardines».

Santos también indica que se observa la perfecta adecuación del uso de cada uno de los espacios de la Alhambra a la idea de jardín. El de los Arrayanes, por ejemplo, es de carácter ceremonial, mientras que el de los Leones es la metáfora de un jardín desaparecido y el de la Alberca es un vergel.
