[.en] The volume contains three essays offering a specific reading of different moments in the work of Aurelio Galfetti (Lugano, 1936), a well-known Swiss architect who collaborated - between the sixties and eighties - with exponents of the so-called "Ticino school" and founder, together with Mario Botta, of the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture. Starting from a single project - such as the new pavilion of the neuropsychiatric hospital in Mendrisio (New Villa Ortensia), representative of Galfetti's professional practice - it is shown how the idea of a territorial architecture has always linked the project in his work (on every scale) to the place, the landscape and the territory.

Architecture in Malta during the first half of the twentieth century has to date been a neglected area of academic research. Although there have been succinct contributions profiling some of the more prominent architects, Maltese architecture of this period has never been analyzed within the prevailing political and socio-economic context. This publication seeks to address this lacuna in local architectural history. The period under study is a tumultuous one, encompassing the First World War (1914–18), the Sette Giugno (1919), the Self-Government Constitution (1921), the suspension of that same Constitution (1930), the Language Question (mid-1930s), the Second World War (1939–45), and the Post-War Reconstruction (1943–50). It was a period of major challenges with Malta under British colonial rule, characterized by an unstable economy, distinct social classes, and political aspirations for greater autonomy and self-governance.

‘Conrad Thake has imposed on himself a forty-year time frame for his impressive research into architectural activity in Malta and its more notable exponents. The period 1910–50, is not an inordinately long stretch of time, but is still a most momentous one. Forty years that embrace, among others, no less than two world wars, the Communist revolution, the discovery of antibiotics, the rise and fall of Fascism and Nazism, the assertion of the airplane, the acceptance of abstract art, the diffusion of sound cinema and television.’ - Giovanni Bonello

‘Architect Thake, with his habitual academic analyses, hones in on a period so far sparsely covered or researched: that of the architecture of the initial decades of the last century. During the first five decades of that century local architects were prone to borrowing motives from past historical styles, while also adapting imported influences from then current foreign architectural trends. As such, the local panorama of buildings of this era presents a varied and hybrid amalgam manifesting examples of Art Nouveau, menageries of resuscitated historical styles, and the initial birth-pangs of local Modernism.’ - Richard England

[.en] With offices in San Francisco and Sacramento, Dreyfuss + Blackford Architecture has 48 employees and has been in continuous operation since 1950. The firm achieved international recognition early on with the design of several notable game-changing landmark structures, including the recently rehabilitated SMUD Headquarters Building in Sacramento, CA. This project recently received the California Preservation Foundation’s 2020 Preservation Design Award as well as the Trustee’s Award for Excellence. Now in their seventh decade, they continue to be one of the preeminent architectural firms in the region, providing architecture, planning, and interiors services to a broad spectrum of public and private sector clients.

Their unwavering commitment to design excellence is reflected in the quality of their built work. They believe great planning is about more than how people use the spaces they create―it’s how they feel inside of them. Positive experience provides the space for engagement and positive communication―resulting in an opportunity for making change in the world through the sharing of knowledge and collective experience. When they combine this understanding with a consistent pattern of outstanding design and efficient construction, the structures can provide lasting aesthetic quality and durability for generations. The firm has been recognized for design at local, state, and national levels with more than 150 awards over its 71-year history. This book celebrates seventy years of outstanding design by Dreyfuss + Blackford Architecture. It starts with historical milestones, shows some examples of process and practice, and concludes with a few consequential recent projects.

[.en] Which bathroom do we want to imagine for the years to come? The bath is back to being 'democratic'. That is, everyone likes it. However, since domestic spaces are getting smaller and smaller, many manufacturers have come up with the bathtub-tub: small size, still comfortable and, above all, more sustainable because it contains less water. Bidet yes or no? Coating materials? There really is something for everyone: hot, cold, à demi. So let the bathroom be, as you like it.

[.en] This 2G monograph celebrates the craft and ingenuity of MOS, the Harlem-based architecture and design studio founded by Hilary Sample and Michael Meredith in 2005. Recipient of the 2015 Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum National Design Award in Architecture, MOS is responsible for a variety of international projects, from private residences to art studios and community centers, which draw on and combine a consistent vocabulary of readily identifiable shapes from its own architectural catalog--chimneys, corridors, courtyards, roofs, windows. Recent projects include the Huyghe + Le Corbusier Puppet Theater at Harvard's Carpenter Center; Artist Studio in Ancram, New York; the Floating House in Lake Huron, Ontario; the Welcome and Education Center, Apan Housing Laboratory in Apan, Mexico; and the IVY Coathook System. This volume looks at a representative sampling of its acclaimed projects from the past two decades.

The New York architecture office MOS, founded by Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample, is one of the few in the United States that manages to build a quality work from their almost artisanal office structure. Their architecture’s intention is not to programmatically experiment with social norms, wanting to use architecture to directly intervene or facilitate interactions between neighbors or occupants. MOS’s projects are built through combining and aggregating a multiplicity of architectural elements: chimneys, corridors, courtyards, roofs, windows, etc. Their work is partially self-referential, drawing on a consistent set of elements, ideas, and characteristics from their own architectural catalogue. This 2G issue include their last works of the office together with two texts by the architect and critic Stan Allen and by Giovanna Borasi, director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal.

[.en] The story of Boris Iofan—designer of the iconic but unbuilt Palace of the Soviets—whose buildings came to define the language of Soviet architecture. What would an architect do for the chance to build the tallest building in the world? What would he sacrifice to stay alive in the midst of Stalin’s murderous purges?

This is the first major publication on the remarkable life and career of Boris Iofan (1891–1976), state architect to Joseph Stalin. Iofan’s story is an insight into the troubled relationship of all successful architects with power. A gifted designer and a committed Communist, Iofan became the Soviet Union’s most celebrated architect after Alexei Rykov, Lenin’s successor, persuaded him to return to Moscow from Rome with his aristocratic wife, Olga Sasso-Ruffo. Iofan was at the heart of political life in the Soviet Union and his work is key to understanding its official culture.

When Stalin’s henchmen crushed the architectural avant-garde, it was Iofan who created the new national style, from the grand projects he realized—including the House on the Embankment, a megastructure of 505 homes for the Soviet elite—to even more ambitious unbuilt projects, in particular the Palace of the Soviets, a baroque Stalinist dream whose image was reproduced throughout the Soviet Union. His career took him to New York and Paris, and to the destroyed city of Stalingrad. He was a friend of Frank Lloyd Wright; a rival of Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Erich Mendelsohn; and an enemy of Hitler’s architect Albert Speer, whose Nazi pavilion faced Iofan’s Soviet one at the Paris Expo in 1937. He kept silent when Stalin executed his friends, including Rykov; he also sacrificed his own talent by following the dictator’s instructions to the letter in creating the regime’s landmarks.

Generously illustrated, with a wide range of previously unpublished material, this book is an exploration of architecture as an instrument of statecraft. It is an insight into the key moments of 20th-century politics and culture from a unique perspective, and the personal story of a remarkable individual who witnessed many of the most dramatic turning points of modern history.

[.en] India has been historically known for its repertoire in architecture and design. Post-Independence, the country struggled to come to its feet in terms of policies, economic direction and infrastructural development. Nonetheless, the country has witnessed tremendous transformation in its built environment in the past five decades. Most projects in the seventies focused on providing housing and building townships, establishing industries and offices to provide work, and setting up institutions to empower people with education. With the onset of the eighties, the focus expanded to designing cultural centres and embassies, and interweaving them into the urban fabric. The nineties opened up opportunities in the country post-liberalization. One could sense a significant shift in the architectural design language, albeit retaining the vernacular sensibilities. Integration of a redefined ideology into the building’s fabric reformed working spaces, industrial facilities, institutional designs as well as façades of buildings. This period also showcased newness in building materials. A decade into the new millennium, technology metamorphosed by upgrading the functions and design sensibilities it was able to bring into architecture. Promoting sustainable development, the designs reflect a futuristic aesthetic where the structures are responsive to their environment. At the same time, the designs are also curated to address the present-day issues, bringing with it a sense of responsibility. In a surge for meaningful design responses in India’s urban environment while imbibing the tenets of sustainability, this book captures the transformations that have taken place through the lens of a leading, multidisciplinary architecture and engineering practice, CP Kukreja Architects.

Ils s'appellent Richard Buckminster Fuller, Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Jeanneret, Lauwrence Kocher, Walter Gropius, Jean Prouvé, Charles et Ray Eames, Makoto Masuzawa, Jorn Utzon, et aujourd'hui Hans Walter Müller, Renzo Piano ou Shigeru Ban.

[.en] The Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich has been researching the integration of robots into the architectural practice, both in design and the fabrication process, for some time. This book—created in collaboration with the chair of Christophe Girot, Gramazio Kohler Research, and Marco Hutter at ETH Zurich’s Robotic Systems Lab—is the first to investigate the use of robot-based construction equipment for large-scale soil grading in landscape architecture. As landscapes are continuously changing due to ever-changing environmental conditions, the application of autonomous systems that respond to the environment rather than perform predefined and static earthwork is of particular interest in this field.‘Robotic Landscapes’ sheds light on a series of groundbreaking experiments in an interdisciplinary collaboration of landscape design, environmental engineering, and robotics that aims to make landscape architecture sustainable and ecological in the long term.

[.en] Although most of Inken and Hinrich Baller's buildings were developed within the tight constraints of the social housing program in West Berlin in the 1970s and 1980s, they always offer more than the standard: slenderness, lightness, large balconies, complex spatial relationships across multiple floors, and outdoor green spaces. With their unconventional residential and public buildings, the Ballers' creations are today as much as ever examples for high-quality and affordable housing and intriguing urban spaces. During visits with current residents of these buildings, photographs of the lively and lived- in architecture were taken. A collection of archive material, original plans and essays complement these images to present a complete picture of these multifaceted buildings. Accompanies the exhibition of the same name at Deutschen Architekturzentrum Berlin, 04 March - 24 April 2022.
