[.en] Between 1960 and 1965 Gio Ponti worked on the headquarters of the religious congregation Notre Dame de Sion, located on the Janiculum Hill in Rome. His contribution to the project has been unidentified until recently. In 2014, the building was converted to house the Catholic University of America and the Australian Catholic University. This occasion gave architects of AeV Architetti the opportunity to carry out historical and archival research on the original project, the results of which are presented here. The book is enriched with the addition of detailed original drawings of the furnishings that still exist 50 years after the building was designed.

Monograph dedicated to an unknown project by Gio Ponti: the mother house of the religious congregation of Notre Dame de Sion, built in Rome between 1960 and 1965. The reasons and circumstances as to why the building has remained anonymous till now is unknown. The complete collection of project pencil drawings on tracing paper, preserved at the CSAC archives in Parma, have never been opened and are published here for the first time. In 2014, the building needed to be converted to house two important foreign Catholic universities (the Catholic University of America and the Australian Catholic University). There was a need for student residential and teaching buildings, which gave the architects Cinzia Abbate and Carlo Vigevano (AeV Architetti Associati) who edited this publication, the opportunity to carry out historiographic and philological research on the original project to establish the restoration project plans for the modern structure. The building was revealed thanks to the contribution of several experts of Ponti’s work: Maristella Casciato, Margherita Guccione, Salvatore Licitra, Elena Tinacci, Marina Kavalirek. The book is enriched with the addition of very detailed original drawings of the furnishings that still exist 50 years after the project was designed.

[.en] Berlin’s building industry is booming – and along with it a wide range of ideas on its architectural future. They react to the city’s outstanding situation in Europe, with its subcultural creative spaces, ambitious major construction projects and innovative housing development, all in close proximity to each other. Every year, Berlin architects meet the challenge of bringing together this unparalleled diversity of people and architecture – with great success! This volume presents a carefully curated selection of the most exciting current building projects both in and outside the capital. For instance, densification projects are creating inner-urban housing, while existing buildings are being sustainably reactivated and green spaces designed as cultural and local recreation areas. In addition to these project presentations, informative essays analyse and discuss backgrounds, trends and developments affecting (not only) Berlin: including the latest interior design trends such as fine dining in a club atmosphere, the current wave of school building and the question of how to reclaim the city from cars.

[.en] Architecture from and in Berlin has always been a reflection of the current global building sector and a trend indicator at the same time. Whether residential construction, landscape design, or traffic planning – the concepts developed in the German capital are internationally renowned. As every year, Building Berlin once again presents the most interesting projects of the past year. Thematic essays that add a reflective dimension to the representative examples complement the presentation of the roughly 65 projects across eight chapters. This year, the volume focuses on the mega-theme of densification. The range of solutions for making a city more compact extend from closing gaps on small corner lots, via new buildings that utilize inner courtyard spaces or mini-houses for urban nomads, to temporary commercial architecture and the expansion of universities under the ground.

This volume presents an in-depth selection of the most exciting new projects: from unconventional pop-up architecture to large international projects and attractive and resident-friendly urban open spaces. The exhibition of works is supplemented by informative essays that illuminate current topics, backgrounds, trends and developments in the world of construction – not only in Berlin. How can affordable and yet high-quality residential space be created? How will demographic change influence life in the different neighbourhoods? And how can a city like Berlin continue to position itself architecturally as an art and culture metropolis?

[.en] In the past few years, Mexico has brought to light a new generation of architects whose extraordinary vision and productivity has positioned the country among the most creative design cultures of the world. Under his own firm FR-EE, since 2000 Fernando Romero has designed and created a number of projects which represent a new vision of Mexican and world architecture. Romero s approach to architecture is innovative and an inspirational tool for empowering future generations. The volume will focus on three themes that intertwine throughout the content of the book. On-site photographs (mainly aerial views) highlight the different places where FR-EE works, from urban centers to the desert. The location is what drives FR-EE s creative work, while the practice strives to investigate the dynamic forces of each site and client. Inspirational photographs give the reader a vision of how Romero s perspective shifts between different focuses of references, and reimagines them in new symbolic visions of the world (from monuments to colors, from natural elements to animals). The images include renderings, photographs, diagrams, plans, and sections. The projects are presented in situ and through architectural drawings, so as to explain the projects concepts and contents.

[.en] Lina Bo Bardi is regarded as one of the most important architects in Brazil’s history. Beginning her career as a Modernist architect in Rome, Bo Bardi and her husband emigrated to Brazil following the end of WWII. Bo Bardi quickly resumed her practice in her adopted homeland with architecture that was both modern and firmly rooted in the culture of Brazil. In 1951 she designed “Casa de Vidro” (“Glass House”), her first built work, where she and her husband would live for the rest of their lives. She also designed the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (São Paulo Art Museum), a landmark of Latin American modernist architecture which opened in 1968. It was for this museum she created the iconic glass easel display system, which remains radical to date. This book presents a comprehensive record of Bo Bardi’s overarching approach to art and architecture and shows how her exhibition designs, curatorial projects, and writing informed her spatial designs. Essays on Bo Bardi’s life and work accompany archival material such as design sketches and writings by the artist, giving new insight into the conceptual and material processes behind this radical thinker and creator’s projects.

[.en] Inspired by the 2019 Bauhaus centennial, ‘Designing for Precarious Citizens’ links the ideals of the Bauhaus to research by designers and students on the living and housing conditions of vulnerable groups in society today. For the Bauhaus, technology was a tool for reducing the vulnerability of working-class citizens, but in modern society it often prevents people from being able to make decisions about their own future. The various design projects featured here follow on the ideas of architect Johan Niegeman, one of the few Dutch educators at the Bauhaus. The book also includes key research by designers Frank Kolkman, Giuditta Vendrame, and Klasien van de Zandschulp.

[.en] In the last decades Western architecture has largely dominated the discourse and the built environment worldwide. Recently architecture firms from non-Western countries have been establishing local and global recognition for themselves. Practices all over the world face challenges against a backdrop of rapidly growing cities, ecological demands, changing societies and climate, and emerging economies. Local architects often find strikingly different solutions to local requirements, including sustainability, transportation, migration, construction materials, and traditions. In Mexico, architects work closely with indigenous communities to create modular social housing that can be assembled in one week. In Namibia, a lodge in a wildlife conservancy is designed to echo a local bird’s nest, while in Vietnam, a library and public space have created a micro-ecosystem to house fish and grow food. ‘Beyond the West’ journeys across Asia, Africa, and the Americas to understand how local architects respond to a changing world, and focuses its wide lens on inspiring and truly global architecture.

Since 1980 the Award has been given every three years to projects that combine social and ecological aspects and translate them into innovative and exemplary design. The Award seeks to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of societies across the world, in which Muslims have a significant presence. This publication presents the shortlist of the 2017–2019 award cycle. From a group of almost 400, 20 projects have been shortlisted by the Master Jury and evaluated by an expert group of technical reviewers. Some of these projects have been honoured with the Aga Khan Award. In addition to detailed descriptions of all projects, this book gathers a series of personal statements from the members of the Steering Committee and the Award’s Master Jury on key issues that were crucial in the discussions for the final selection and assignment of the award recipients. Assembled together, this book presents a selection of the outstanding examples of sustainable and socially relevant architecture in the world today and opens up fundamental perspectives for the planning of the future.

[.en] ‘Soft Living Architecture’ explores the invention of new architectures based on living processes. It crafts a unique intersection between two fast-developing disciplines: biomimicry and biodesign in architecture, and bioinformatics and natural computing in the natural sciences. This is the first book to examine both the theory and methodology of architecture and design working directly with the natural world. It explores a range of approaches from the use of life-like systems in building design to the employment of actual growing and living cell and tissue cultures as architectural materials - creating architecture that can change, learn and grow with us. The use of 'living architecture' is cutting-edge and speculative, yet it is also inspiring a growing number of designers worldwide to adopt alternative perspectives on sustainability and environmental design. The book examines the ethical and theoretical issues arising alongside case-studies of experimental practice, to explore what we mean by 'natural' in the Anthropocene, and raise deep questions about the nature of design and the design of nature. This provocative and at times controversial book shows why it will become ever more necessary to embrace living processes in architecture if we are to thrive in a sustainable future.

October 2019 marks a milestone for the Museum of Fine Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland, with its long-awaited reopening in a new site: a striking contemporary building from the award-winning Italian and Catalan architects Barozzi Veiga. An art center within the heart of one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities, this space will house the museum’s prestigious collection of over 11,000 works, from eighteenth-century pieces to contemporary art.

Edited and authored by the well-known architecture expert Philip Jodidio, this book is dedicated to the ambitious project of rehousing a collection that was begun in 1841. With 150 photographs and drawings that illuminate an enormous undertaking, this volume provides a detailed insight into the different phases of design and construction, and the creation of an art complex that will later include museums of photography and design created by the Portuguese architects Aires Mateus.
