This volume comprises a critical review of exemplary urban and landscape design through 25 recent projects by Dutch architectural practices, both in the Netherlands and abroad. In an interview with Winy Maas, the MVRDV partner is critical of today’s popular grassroots initiatives, versus top-down plans that are able to solve major planning problems like water management and flood control, or mobility and accessibility. With findings to support this argument, the message is to dare to think big, but without losing sight of the small scale. Five main themes define the selection and critical essays: design as kickstart, innovative cities, design as research, station central, and breathing space.

The 25 projects in this yearbook illustrate the current state of Dutch landscape architecture and urban design. It is not a favourable time for either profession, yet Dutch designers are still forging new paths and making their mark on developments in the Netherlands, and increasingly abroad. This book contains a selection of temporary projects, major redevelopments and investigative studies, as well as attractive and appealing places in town and country.

The 2014 yearbook shows projects of well known names such as West 8, MVRDV, KCAP, HOSPER, H+N+S and OKRA, as well as work of upcoming designer Steven Delva and young designers like LAMA and LINT.
