The goal of advancing eco cities often remains confined to political or technological issues. This book establishes a focus on architectural and infrastructural design approaches to sustainable urban planning. Starting out from a critical assessment of five prototypical eco cities of recent decades (Vauban/Germany, solarCity/Austria, Valdespartera and Sarriguren/Spain, Bo01/Sweden), the book identifies fields in which architectural and urban designers can use their creative skills and methods to achieve sustainable results on an urban scale. Sustainability is undergoing a shift of focus from quantitative measures toward designoriented, interactive interventions.

The range of qualitative solutions in ecological design is discussed here in four topical sections on "Materialize", "Mobilize", "Simulate" and "Transform". El coro de la catedral de Troyes (h. 1228-1231), la rosa septentrional de Chartres (h. 1230), el cuerpo de la ampliación rayonnant de la basílica de Saint-Denis (h. 1231-1241), la capilla real de Saint-Germain-en Laye (h. 1238-1241), los últimos tramos de las torres de Notre-Dame (h. 1241-1245), la Sainte-Chapelle (h. 1241-1248), el volumen radiante de Burgos (h. 1250-1277) y el interior de la catedral de León (h. 1250-1277) constituyen uno de los conjuntos más magistrales de toda la historia del arte, que, sin embargo, mantienen un vínculo en común, cuyo secreto se trata de desentrañar en las páginas de esta obra (ilustrada con más de un centenar de fotografías originales, en color y blanco y negro). 

José Fernando González Romero (1950), licenciado en historia y arte por la Universidad de Oviedo, ha ejercido la enseñanza en centros de secundaria de Barcelona y Gijón. Como investigador, en temas relacionados con la historia medieval y la arquitectura, ha participado en congresos, revistas especializadas y publicaciones de distinta índole, tanto individuales como colectivas, entre las cuales destacan sus estudios sobre la conquista de Sevilla durante el siglo xiii por Fernando III el Santo y el almirante Ramón Bonifaz, del que es descendiente directo. Entre sus últimos libros publicados, destacan La minería del carbón y la arquitectura industrial en Asturias (con Pelayo Muñoz Duarte, 2004), La arquitectura industrial en Gijón: la huella de una ausencia (con Pelayo Muñoz Duarte, Ediciones Trea, 2008) y La arquitectura industrial de Oviedo y su área de influencia (Ediciones Trea, 2011).

Leisure has a huge impact on the European landscapes. Contemporary Western life has given rise to all sorts of mobilities, flexibilities and incentives that fuel the sometimes dramatic changes in the landscape we are witnessing today. Can the relationship between leisure and landscape be a productive one and, if so, under what conditions? This complex relationship was the subject of a European project, instigated by Dirk Sijmons, Dutch Government Advisor on Landscape, involving thirty universities from twenty countries. This book presents the resulting design proposals. To set the scene, the relations between landscape and human leisure activity are explored by four experts. The history of leisure and tourism in Europe is analysed by examining archetypal landscapes and practices. The epilogue reflects on the wider prospects for leisure and landscape in Europe in a rapidly changing world. The book is richly illustrated throughout with maps, striking facts and figures, and photography by Martin Parr.
