[.es] Reflexión sobre el papel del río como configurador de la ciudad, que ahonda en los elementos estéticos, perceptivos, cotidianos y esenciales de Córdoba, a partir de las descripciones, trazos y propuestas más representativas de su historia; desde una doble vocación, local y universal.

El río Guadalquivir fue el hecho fundacional de Córdoba, la fuente de vida para su pervivencia. Pero ha sido mucho más que eso. La existencia de un amplio vado facilitó su travesía, que quedó fosilizada en el puente construido en época romana, induciendo la confluencia de una amplia red de comunicaciones, fluviales y terrestres, lo que la convirtió en una verdadera encrucijada. También el río supuso la fuente de energía hidráulica para sus molinos, aceñas e instalaciones industriales, un lugar para el ocio de su población, manantial para la vida animal y vegetal, y el origen de las periódicas inundaciones que asolaron la ciudad hasta época reciente.

[.es] El uso de bóvedas góticas con rampante curvo (no esférico) en edificios con cubiertas resueltas con azoteas era una cuestión que estaba por estudiar. El libro clasifica, cataloga y ofrece una explicación para el uso de este tipo de bóvedas tanto en el Reino de Sevilla como en Nueva España.

Hace años que busco formas que, construidas con los materiales correctos, proporcionen estabilidad y resistencia a las construcciones que realizo. En la actualidad el mundo de la imagen, de lo visual, ha impuesto una arquitectura que no encuentra la materialidad adecuada para la forma diseñada. Las formas ya no se eligen por su ligereza y bondad de comportamiento. Se eligen por su imagen.

Buscar en la antigüedad, sobre todo en el gótico, modos de actuar, presenta ventajas enormes. Comprender la jerarquía entre las nervaduras y el elemento, su disposición, el orden constructivo, etc., ayuda enormemente a afrontar la construcción de edificios en la actualidad. Aunque éstos se construyan con materiales, y procedimientos diferentes a los antiguos, no hay mejor fuente de conocimiento en materia de adaptar mallas de barras a todo tipo de entornos y situaciones.

Uno de los mayores errores que los arquitectos cometen actualmente es pensar que el cálculo (realizado por otros habitualmente) solucionará cualquier diseño. Un mal diseño es insalvable. En un buen diseño el cálculo permitirá optimizar la solución. Dentro de este ámbito las reglas de predimensionado, el orden de magnitud y el conocimiento del comportamiento mecánico de las geometrías básicas (planas, cilíndricas, doble curvatura sinclástica y anticlástica) permiten diseñar con libertad y seguridad. Aprender a dimensionar correctamente puede aligerar enormemente el peso propio de un edificio. Creemos que no hay mejor criterio de ecoeficiencia que construir de un modo ligero ya que así la cimentación es escasa, el transporte se reduce, los elementos se pueden prefabricar y así controlar mejor, etc.

En 2009 publiqué un libro que analizaha y explicaba la evolución del gótico en el Reino de Sevilla. El libro terminaba aventurando las consecuencias de la aparición de los terceletes y combados para las bóvedas del Reino de Sevilla. En este libro nuevo queremos profundizar en la influencia de la Fábrica de Sevilla desde el siglo XV hasta el XVI, no sólo en su entorno inmediato, sino también en Nueva España en donde el gótico adaptado se abre camino durante cerca de treinta años. Su obra profesional ha sido reconocida con el premio FAD de espacios exteriores 2003, el Premio del Público en la 3ª Bienal Europea del Paisaje o la selección en la VII Bienal de Arquitectura Española entre otras. Las fuentes primarias, es decir, escritos de la época, dibujos y trazados -además de los edificios mismos-, sirven a la investigación histórica, confirman modos de hacer, o permiten ver las arquitecturas con los ojos de sus autores. Su publicación es una buena noticia, pero más si se presenta como inventario. El esfuerzo desarrollado por los autores de este libro ha dado lugar a una herramienta singular y valiosísima en este ámbito, reuniendo las representaciones de carácter gótico en la península ibérica. No estamos ante la publicación de un cuaderno o compendio histórico, sino de algo más notable, la generalidad de las trazas de un país (o dos).

Este libro, que es el volumen más grueso de la colección del Instituto Juan de Herrera, es la publicación de los resultados de un proyecto de investigación impulsado por la Red Tardogótico (www.tardogotico.net), reunión de grupos y proyectos que ha dado interesantísimos frutos en los últimos años. Además de Javier Ibáñez, quien coordina el libro, han participado muy prestigiosos historiadores, que figuran como autores de fichas de casos individuales. Merece la pena emplear unas líneas en la relación: Begoña Alonso Ruiz, María Isabel Álvaro Zamora, Lino Cabezas Gelabert, María Dolores Campos Sánchez-Bordona, Ana Castro Santamaría, Diego Domínguez Montero, Juan Escorial Esgueva, Joaquín García Nistal, Ana Goy Diz, Alfonso Jiménez Martín, Fernando Marías, Jorge Martín Marco, Nicolás Menéndez González, Ricardo Jorge Nunes Da Silva, Luana Savalli Ravell, Miguel Taín Guzmán, María Josefa Tarifa Castilla, Luis Vasallo Toranzo, Fernando Villaseñor Sebastián, Arturo Zaragozà Catalán. Con este elenco es fácil hacer corresponder muy adecuadamente los casos con los investigadores más apropiados para su comentario.

Lo recopilado es una colección de dibujos góticos, por decirlo de una manera trivial; pero el título es largo, porque define puntualmente el contenido, a partir de la reflexión sobre la delimitación del tema de estudio. Así, vemos que el título hace alusión a las diversas maneras de representar que se han recogido —hay incluso maquetas—, siempre en relación con el modo de hacer gótico, pero menciona también la extensión geográfica y la definición del periodo temporal que comprende. Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, two of the most important architects and designers of ornament in American history. [.it] La figura di Ignazio Gardella (1905-1999) è stata, a partire dagli anni Trenta del secolo scorso, al centro di una ricca letteratura critica, segnata da contributi di grandi studiosi e architetti. Molteplici sguardi che hanno individuato gli elementi caratterizzanti il suo lavoro, quali il rapporto con le tecniche della composizione, la storia, i contesti e le città. Aspetto meno noto e più aperto alla sperimentazione è la ricerca sullo spazio interno, che pervade tutto l’arco della sua carriera. Le ‘altre architetture’ cui si fa riferimento in questo volume non alludono soltanto all’intenzione di occuparsi dell’inedito o degli aspetti minori, magari non del tutto compresi e a volte trascurati, ma anche alla possibilità di aggiungere materiale di indagine, per comprendere meglio il processo di elaborazione compositiva di Gardella, a partire dai progetti per gli interni, attraverso le sistemazioni espositive stabili o gli allestimenti effimeri. Progetti che a volte, nell’immedesimazione del lavoro di archivio, ci appaiono essere sorgente e non riflesso della sua più conclamata espressione architettonica. I contributi qui presentati sono il risultato dell’attività di ricerca avviata nel 2016 nell’ambito di un programma pluriennale dello CSAC (Centro Studi e Archivio della Comunicazione dell’Università di Parma) dedicato all’opera di alcuni maestri dell’architettura italiana del Novecento, portatori di un’eredità culturale che si ritiene debba essere reinvestita nei processi di trasformazione e avanzamento disciplinare del progetto di architettura.

[.en] The figure of Ignazio Gardella (1905-1999) has been the focus since the 1930s of a wealth of critical literature marked by the contributions of renowned scholars and architects. Their collective observations have identified the characterizing elements of Gardella’s work in terms of their relationship with compositional techniques, history, contexts, and cities. A lesser-known aspect, more open to experimentation, is his research into interior spaces, which accompanied his entire career. The other architectures in this book allude not only to to the intention of dealing with the unpublished or minor aspects, often overlooked and perhaps not fully understood, but also to the possibility that additional research materials, based on Gardella’s projects for interiors and permanent and temporary exhibitions, can help us to better comprehend the architect’s design processes. As we immersed ourselves in the archival work, we realized that these projects often appeared to be sources, rather than reflections, of his more acclaimed architectural expressions. The essays presented here are the outcome of a research project begun in 2016 as part of a multi-year program developed by CSAC (The Study Centre and Communication Archive of the University of Parma). The program is dedicated to the work of some of the masters of 20th-century Italian architecture, whose cultural heritage must be reinvested in the renewal and disciplinary advancement of architectural design today.

[.en] The official catalog for the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia consists of two volumes: the first is dedicated to the International Exhibition curated by Hashim Sarkis and the second presents the National Participations and Collateral Events. “How will we live together?” is as much a social and political question as a spatial one: rapidly changing social norms, growing political polarization, climate change and vast global inequalities are making us ask it more urgently than before. In parallel, the weakness of today’s political models compels us to look at how architecture shapes inhabitation and community. The architects invited to participate in the Biennale Architettura 2021 are encouraged to include other professions and constituencies―artists, builders and craftspeople, but also politicians, journalists, social scientists and everyday citizens. In effect, the Biennale asserts the vital role of the architect as both cordial convener and custodian of the spatial contract.

[.en] Published in 1929, ‘From Material to Architecture’ contains the main features of László Moholy-Nagy’s teaching program at the Bauhaus. With its focus on the preliminary course, this last book of the 14-volumes series explains how students “develop towards practice from day to day.” The educational principle behind it, "Jedermann ist begabt" (everyone is talented), was central to teaching at the Bauhaus from 1919 to its conclusion in 1933. Moholy-Nagy’s second contribution within the series (he also wrote ‘Painting, Photography, Film’, volume 8) searches “for the closest connection between art, science and technology by aiming for the training of finer sensory perception.” The series is published with the generous support of the Rudolf-August Oetker-Stiftung.
