The Architectural League Prize is an annual event involving a competition, a series of lectures, an exhibition, and a publication, organized by the Architectural League of New York and its Young Architects and Designers Committee. The 2015 competition theme, 'Authenticity', investigated recent advances in computation, visualization, material intelligence, and fabrication technologies, exploring how these advances have begun to alter the understanding of general design principles as well as the architect's role and practical approach toward architecture and research. Between 1949 and 1989, remarkable buildings of late modernity were constructed in the coastal city of Kuwait. Within these four decades, the city state on the Arabian Gulf was comprehensively restructured and practically redesigned. Following a first volume with150 carefully selected exemplary buildings, this second volume features interviews, essays and arguments, as well as transcripts of contemporary publications of these years. The texts by local and international scholars focus on questions regarding the significance and function of the buildings along with the role of individual and corporate protagonists that influenced, defined and created this highly dynamic restructuring process. Furthermore, all aspects are integrated into a wider regional and international context. The contributions are complemented by an extensive array of photographic, layout, and archive materials. 

Published in 2016, ‘Modern Architecture Kuwait 1949–1989’ is the first systematic analysis of Kuwait’s building production. This second volume collects essays, arguments, and interviews that focus on the role of individuals and corporations in the process of perceiving, transforming, and building the modern state of Kuwait.

The post-WWII environment along with political and artistic solidarity in the emerging Arab World promoted an exchange of ideas and individuals throughout the region. This edited collection uncovers the regional context that established the modern practice of architecture and planning between the 1940s and 1980s. The editors of "Modern Architecture Kuwait 1949–1989" selected a diverse group of contributors from both Kuwait and abroad to produce expertly researched and crafted essays and arguments. The interviews conducted by the editors between 2012 and 2016 appear as transcripts, while other relevant published materials produced in or on Kuwait from 1949 until 1989 are also featured. In their own essays, the editors explore broader topics such as the political and socio-economic process of modernisation in the country, the educational and professional establishment of the architectural practice in the region, and the development of a contemporary construction industry in Kuwait. Also, the volume’s introduction includes an atlas that traces the movement of architects, planners, and projects for and from Kuwait, mapping a series of unprecedented reciprocities between geographical, economic, political, and social realities in the Arab World. The second collection expands far beyond the first volume, challenging different narratives while also connecting divergent spheres to offer readers a critical look at a local perspective based on a regional context.

Aunque la obra de Graça Correia y Roberto Ragazzi ha sido muy publicada y premiada en numerosos países, está es la primera monografía completa que recoge su producción arquitectónica en un único volumen. En 282 páginas se presentan un total de 13 proyectos y obras desde sus inicios como estudio hasta la más reciente producción que se encuentra aún en proceso. 

La arquitectura de Graça Correia y Roberto Ragazzi cuenta con una fuerte presencia de lo material llevado a lo extremo de su depuración física y estética. En su trabajo resulta evidente el protagonismo que tiene la estructura desde la concepción misma, pero aunque no se trabaja de manera autónoma ni se impone al resultado formal, tampoco se esconde buscando obtener ese efecto mágico de sorpresa tan contemporáneo. Su manera de entender la función y la relación de la estructura con la arquitectura se encuentra alejada de la separación de ambos en sistemas autónomos, el puramente estructural y el puramente estético. 

Desde los inicios, en sus bocetos, la estructura ni se oculta ni se impone a la forma, el mismo trazo las contiene a ambas. No hay renuncia a la gravedad, al peso, pero sin imponerse a la forma. Predomina la noción de equilibrio, no de un equilibrio visualmente inestable sino, precisamente por la indivisibilidad entre forma y estructura, de un equilibrio en el que ambas pesan por igual. Graça y Roberto consiguen domar la estructura para que sea parte indisoluble de la forma. O lo que es lo mismo, es a través de la estructura domada que la forma se domestica.

Este libro, que se publicó simultáneamente a la exposición del mismo nombre, pretende ser, como ella, una reivindicación de la obra como industria, como lugar donde se hace realidad lo que hasta entonces solo ha sido posible pensado; donde se produce la fabricación de la arquitectura. En la obra se evidencia mejor que en ningún ámbito el saber compartido. Y que el trasvase de conocimientos es el camino primordial para la construcción de lo común. De que toda arquitectura es un hecho colectivo y que por tanto no es de autor; ninguna obra nos pertenece. Ambos, exposición y libro, un elogio a la formación politécnica como compendio de saberes necesarios para acometer no sólo la materialización, sino el propio pensamiento de la arquitectura. Y una reflexión sobre si existe posibilidad de pensar con claridad más allá de donde tienes una firme intuición de lo que las cosas pudieran llegar a ser. Por eso la importancia del conocimiento técnico, y por ello siempre mejor resolver que diseñar y descubrir que inventar; pues es en la insistencia y la revisión donde surge lo nuevo.

Adolf Loos consideraba que un edificio debía ser discreto por fuera y revelar toda su riqueza en el interior. Por esta razón, revisar la obra del arquitecto desde sus interiores supone un ejercicio imprescindible para entender la complejidad espacial de uno de los arquitectos más incomprendidos del siglo XX.

Contrariamente a los arquitectos coetáneos de la Secesión, quienes diseñaban sus espacios hasta el menor detalle, Loos se ofrecía como “profesor de interiorismo” y pretendía adaptarse a los hábitos y preferencias del cliente, invitándolos a abrazar su propio mal gusto, en vez de seguir el gusto de un arquitecto “esteta”. Junto con el habitante diseñaba espacios acogedores, en los que la calidez se desprendía del uso efectivo de materiales de calidad y de la creación de un espacio continuo y fluido pautado por diferentes elementos mobiliarios. Loos diseñaba muebles integrados a la arquitectura que otorgaban una función a una parte del espacio, como bancos y estanterías de la misma madera del revestimiento de una pared, o pequeñas salas de estar definidas por un cambio de altura y elementos mobiliarios fundidos con las paredes. A la vez, esta estrategia de considerar el hábitat como un todo (arquitectura y mobiliario), no le imposibilitaba complementar estos espacios con otros muebles producidos industrialmente según modelos clásicos ingleses que utilizaba o copiaba sin pudor, haciéndose valer de un pragmatismo que adquirió durante su estancia en Norteamérica.

Para Loos, la importancia del interior tenía que ver con la vida que se desarrollaba y el respeto a la privacidad e intimidad. En sus escritos periodísticos, publicados principalmente en la revista ‘Das Andere’, se hace patente la voluntad del arquitecto de modernizar la sociedad austríaca. Más allá de su arquitectura formal, lo que Loos creó fue una nueva cultura del habitar, y es precisamente esta actitud la que lo hace terriblemente moderno.

Los arquitectos Juan Jesús Jiménez Mata y Alberto Jiménez Ruiz firman el libro ‘Treinta años de intervenciones en la Catedral Nueva de Cádiz (1987-2016)’, en el que resumen tres décadas de obras. Es un documento que sirve para ensalzar el enorme valor patrimonial del edificio y también para reivindicar la necesidad de continuar con nuevos trabajos para mantener y asegurar su pervivencia. También para defender que la red que se colocó hace más de 20 años para proteger de desprendimientos en el interior permanezca así para siempre.

Según explica el arquitecto Alberto Jiménez Ruiz, el libro resume con fichas, fotografías y planos los trabajos realizados en este edificio desde 1987. "Ha sido una gran oportunidad de profundizar en la rehabilitación de una pieza por muy importante para la arquitectura de nuestra ciudad". Jiménez Mata, responsable del plan director de obras en la Catedral, y Jiménez Ruiz, padre e hijo, han venido interviniendo en muchas de las fases de mejoras experimentadas en el edificio.

'En estas tres décadas se han hecho 16 intervenciones en la Catedral', explica Jiménez Ruiz, 'que pueden parece muchas, pero a nosotros nos parecen insuficientes porque, sobre todo, no se han hecho de manera continua sino de forma intermitente'. Entre esos trabajos más recientes, las obras hechas en 2014 en la cubierta, para las cuales se utilizó cal natural, algo innovador y que generó gran interés internacional, de ahí que el propio Jiménez Ruiz fuera invitado a una escuela de arquitectura en Colombia para dar cuenta de esta labor.
