[.en] Thanks to high-performance composite structures made of wood and steel or concrete, wooden buildings are now being erected far beyond the high-rise boundaries. An end to the increase in altitude is hardly in sight. Wooden constructions are also on the uptrend in residential and office construction, sports halls, industrial buildings and bridges. They are the epitome of sustainable building and, thanks to new prefabrication processes, are also competitive in terms of construction costs. The book shows the current development of structural planning with wood on the basis of around 20 outstanding engineering structures. The engineers involved in the planning describe the conception of the supporting structures as well as individual solutions for their implementation.

[.en] “Urban interstices”—their design—are the topic of this book. What are urban interstices? What different issues, opportunities, roles, and concepts do they deal with? The book’s five chapters written by urban planners, architects and interior designers provide five different views and keys—Urban rewriting, Architectural threshold, Green rooms, Connecting publicness, Ephemeral devices—and draft a possible path to sound the spectrum of urban interstices’ design in Italy. Urban space can be “interstitial” in its ambiguous capability of signification in the sense-making process; that is, in the double valence of a mute void—space without signification—or meaningful room—a small and dense universe of suspension. Sometimes the project for interstitial spaces aims to transform the former into the latter. Sometimes, on the other hand, the project makes the interstice an interface, connector, exchanger, membrane, space of interrelation. So that urban interstices become alternatively thresholds and pulsating rooms, and urban catalysts activated by specific design moves and devices. And somehow they also speak of a general “interstitial” condition of urban space today. The critical path proposed here is based on the review of seventy contemporary Italian cases. A collection of sixty projects is provided in the second part of the book, while ten cases—two for each thematic key—are explored in brief monographic essays and by interviews with the authors of the projects. They are the subject of the photographic essay, Visual narration, put in the middle of the book.

[.en] While the grandiosity of Fallingwater and elegance of Taliesin are recognized universally, Frank Lloyd Wright’s first foray into affordable housing is frequently overlooked. Although Wright began work on his American System-Built Homes (ASBH, 1911–17) with great energy, the project fell apart following wartime shortages and disputes between the architect and his developer. While continuing to advocate for the design of affordable small homes, Wright never spoke publicly of ASBH. As a result, the heritage of many Wright-designed homes was forgotten. When Nicholas and Angela Hayes became stewards of the unassuming Elizabeth Murphy House near Milwaukee, they began to unearth evidence that ultimately revealed a one-hundred-year-old fiasco fueled by competing ambitions and conflicting visions of America. The couple’s forensic pursuit of the truth untangled the ways Wright’s ASBH experiment led to the architect’s most productive, creative period. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Forgotten House includes a wealth of drawings and photographs, many of which have never been previously published. Historians, architecture buffs, and Wrightophiles alike will be fascinated by this untold history that fills a crucial gap in the architect’s oeuvre.

[.en] The volume contains three essays offering a specific reading of different moments in the work of Aurelio Galfetti (Lugano, 1936), a well-known Swiss architect who collaborated - between the sixties and eighties - with exponents of the so-called "Ticino school" and founder, together with Mario Botta, of the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture. Starting from a single project - such as the new pavilion of the neuropsychiatric hospital in Mendrisio (New Villa Ortensia), representative of Galfetti's professional practice - it is shown how the idea of a territorial architecture has always linked the project in his work (on every scale) to the place, the landscape and the territory.

Architecture in Malta during the first half of the twentieth century has to date been a neglected area of academic research. Although there have been succinct contributions profiling some of the more prominent architects, Maltese architecture of this period has never been analyzed within the prevailing political and socio-economic context. This publication seeks to address this lacuna in local architectural history. The period under study is a tumultuous one, encompassing the First World War (1914–18), the Sette Giugno (1919), the Self-Government Constitution (1921), the suspension of that same Constitution (1930), the Language Question (mid-1930s), the Second World War (1939–45), and the Post-War Reconstruction (1943–50). It was a period of major challenges with Malta under British colonial rule, characterized by an unstable economy, distinct social classes, and political aspirations for greater autonomy and self-governance.

‘Conrad Thake has imposed on himself a forty-year time frame for his impressive research into architectural activity in Malta and its more notable exponents. The period 1910–50, is not an inordinately long stretch of time, but is still a most momentous one. Forty years that embrace, among others, no less than two world wars, the Communist revolution, the discovery of antibiotics, the rise and fall of Fascism and Nazism, the assertion of the airplane, the acceptance of abstract art, the diffusion of sound cinema and television.’ - Giovanni Bonello

‘Architect Thake, with his habitual academic analyses, hones in on a period so far sparsely covered or researched: that of the architecture of the initial decades of the last century. During the first five decades of that century local architects were prone to borrowing motives from past historical styles, while also adapting imported influences from then current foreign architectural trends. As such, the local panorama of buildings of this era presents a varied and hybrid amalgam manifesting examples of Art Nouveau, menageries of resuscitated historical styles, and the initial birth-pangs of local Modernism.’ - Richard England

[.en] India has been historically known for its repertoire in architecture and design. Post-Independence, the country struggled to come to its feet in terms of policies, economic direction and infrastructural development. Nonetheless, the country has witnessed tremendous transformation in its built environment in the past five decades. Most projects in the seventies focused on providing housing and building townships, establishing industries and offices to provide work, and setting up institutions to empower people with education. With the onset of the eighties, the focus expanded to designing cultural centres and embassies, and interweaving them into the urban fabric. The nineties opened up opportunities in the country post-liberalization. One could sense a significant shift in the architectural design language, albeit retaining the vernacular sensibilities. Integration of a redefined ideology into the building’s fabric reformed working spaces, industrial facilities, institutional designs as well as façades of buildings. This period also showcased newness in building materials. A decade into the new millennium, technology metamorphosed by upgrading the functions and design sensibilities it was able to bring into architecture. Promoting sustainable development, the designs reflect a futuristic aesthetic where the structures are responsive to their environment. At the same time, the designs are also curated to address the present-day issues, bringing with it a sense of responsibility. In a surge for meaningful design responses in India’s urban environment while imbibing the tenets of sustainability, this book captures the transformations that have taken place through the lens of a leading, multidisciplinary architecture and engineering practice, CP Kukreja Architects.

[.en] The long-anticipated monograph on OMA New York by Shohei Shigematsu and Jason Long is sure to be the design and architecture book of the season. Presenting more than 20 radical architectural projects from a new generation of the firm, this mammoth volume is the first compendium by OMA, since Content and Rem Koolhaas’s S, M, L, XL.

Well into its fourth decade, the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), founded by Rem Koolhaas in 1975, remains one of the most influential and successful practices of its kind. OMA describes itself as “a firm operating within the traditional boundaries of architecture and urbanism that applies architectural thinking to domains beyond.” OMA New York, has grown from an American outpost to a full-fledged operation with its own attitudes, contributing to the evolution of the globally acclaimed office. Through a diversity of projects, the firm has transformed our understanding of the city and our evolving relationship with art, fashion, food, sustainability, and other quintessentially twenty-first-century preoccupations.

The works presented here elaborate on OMA’s philosophy even as they expand its portfolio geographically. Featured projects (led by partners Shohei Shigematsu and Jason Long) include residential skyscrapers in New York, Miami, and San Francisco, mixed-use developments in cities from Tokyo to Houston, and projects like 11th Street Bridge Park in the public realm, alongside more intimate spaces such as the studio for renowned Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang. Permanent structures, such as Milstein Hall at Cornell University, the new galleries of Quebec’s Musée National des Beaux-Arts, a cultural forum and neighborhood for Faena in Miami, and the expansion of museums such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo and the New Museum in Manhattan, contrast vividly with temporary interventions such as the Manus x Machina exhibition at the Met Costume Institute and the sculptural installation of soaring concrete columns for An Occupation of Loss.

In between projects are dialogues with leading policy makers, museum directors, artists, fashion designers, musicians, chefs, and curators—Christopher Hawthorne, Lisa Phillips and Massimiliano Gioni, Taryn Simon, Iris van Herpen, Virgil Abloh, David Byrne, Alice Waters, and Cecilia Alemani—who provide insight onto areas of the firm’s interests and preoccupations beyond the realm of architecture.

[.en] The general reading public is likely to think of architecture as buildings. But, with this book, Robert Steinberg would like to help readers understand that architecture shapes lives. Architecture can help communities integrate and thrive. Architecture can touch us, influencing how we feel, and how we interact with others. In short, architecture can fundamentally improve our quality of life.

As a young graduate architect fresh from Berkeley, Steinberg began to discover the potential of architecture to shape communities. Working with his father, an architect who had studied with Mies van der Rohe (and whose father was also an architect), one of Steinberg’s first projects was to draft and redraft a parking garage in downtown Silicon Valley, CA. As he mediated between the two architects in charge of the project―his father and the city architect―he noticed that with each evolution, the garage became more beautiful and refined. And with each improvement, this garage became more able to succeed in the goal of reviving the dying downtown core of Silicon Valley.

The garage was a huge success, and Steinberg began to codify what he had learned. Thanks to the garage, he wrote the first of what would become the 9 Realities of Architecture: Architecture is the Pursuit of Perfection ― a magnificent take-away from a humble parking garage project. As Steinberg eventually rose to become CEO of his firm and grew it into a global practice with six regional offices including Austin and New York, and a major office in Shanghai, he used his drive for creating thriving communities to eventually touch the lives of countless people around the world.

[.en] It was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that the physicist Wallace Clement Sabine developed his theory of reverberation, which has remained fundamental to architectural acoustics to this day, and has subsequently been applied to many building types, especially those for the performing arts. Yet the practice of architectural acoustics goes back much further with the impressive designs of the Greeks proving highly influential. This comprehensive book explores the development of acoustics in architectural design from the theatres of Classical Greece, through the early development of opera houses, concert halls and theatres, to the research work of Sabine and his successors and its influence on twentieth- and twenty-first-century buildings. Topics covered include: the fundamentals of acoustics; the influential legacy of the Greeks and Romans; the evolving design of opera houses, theatres and concert halls and, finally, the acoustics of schools, music schools and recital halls.

[.en] Urban Oases is an ode to the architecture of Dutch hofjes. It explains why hofjes have been a natural and attractive part of the urban fabric of the Netherlands for six centuries and why they continue to appeal to new generations. The appeal of hofje architecture lies in its ability to renew its medieval archetype – an enclosed living environment around a shared green garden. Hofjes allow both residents and visitors to enjoy an especially serene and intimate atmosphere that contrasts surprisingly with the urban experience of hustle and bustle. The drawings, text and photography of Urban Oases take the reader to the capillaries of old Dutch cities and are relevant to an important contemporary global question: How can high-quality, compact residential environments be created in twenty-first century cities? Inspired by this extraordinary architectural heritage, the author addresses everyone who wants to contribute to a sustainable and liveable city.
