[.en] The Yearbook is the international showcase for Dutch architecture. The three editors select special projects that have been completed in the preceding year and describe the most important developments that influence Dutch architecture. The Yearbook editors are Teun van den Ende (Vers Beton, freelance researcher and advisor), Kirsten Hannema (freelance architecture critic for de Volkskrant, Elsevier and ArchitectuurNL) and Arna Mackic (co-founder Studio L A, winner Young Maaskant Prize 2017). The editors drew on the experiences of the past extraordinary year to cast a critical eye over the crop of new buildings. What forms of urban and public life should architecture (continue to) facilitate in the future? With special focus on the immediate home environment, communality and architecture’s relationship with gentrification.

[.en] Indeed, there is still a growing foreign demand for this publication that tells about how the Netherlands deals with adaptive reuse. In the second edition, three recent projects are added: The former railway workshop in Tilburg, the former monastery complex Mariënhage in Eindhoven and the Amsterdam Burgerweeshuis. This also means that three previously recorded cases have lapsed: the former post distribution office in Rotterdam, Ypenburg airport and royal palace of Soestdijk.

The book accompanies the exhibition under the same name that has now already visited many countries. The aim of this Shared Cultural Heritage project is not to tell foreign countries what to do, but to start the debate on adaptive reuse, realizing that the Dutch approach approach is not timeless. When circumstances change this practice will consequently change. And then it is good to know how others deal with this. The current "intervention architecture", originating from Italian architects like Scarpa and Rossi, has become a fashionable phenomenon. And fashions tend to have a limited lifespan. The RCE always uses exhibition and book in combination with workshops and lectures in collaboration with Dutch architects.

The city also has a lot to offer in terms of architecture, what are the 100 best buildings? From the Evoluon to MVRDV's pop podium De Effenaar and from Kropholler’s Van Abbe Museum to the current large-scale redevelopment of the Philips factories, EIndhoven has a lot to offer in terms of architecture.

City of Permanent Temporality is a journal, project exhibit and a theory for a city that is in continuous transformation, where bricks & mortar and people continue to adapt, without ever being complete. The withdrawal of governments and turbulent market forces calls for new methods of planning and design. Elma van Boxel and Kristian Koreman, with their firm ZUS [Zones Urbaines Sensibles], propose a radically new way of making a city: permanent temporality. This strategy is formed around an urban reality of values, material and people; a philosophy based on to the past and orientated towards the future. 'City of Permanent Temporality' is a manual for urban design that links temporary interventions to long-term thinking. Taking as its examples the internationally famous Luchtsingel and Schieblock projects, this book describes the impressive process of 15 years of work in the urban laboratory that is Rotterdam.

Before commencing its large-scale renovations, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen pulls out all the stops with the exhibition 'netherlands ⇄ bauhaus - pioneers of a new world'. 2019 is the centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus, the revolutionary art and design school whose influence can still be felt today. Almost 800 objects - artworks, furniture, ceramics, textiles, photographs, typography and architectural drawings - provide a unique insight into the inspirational interactions between the Netherlands and the Bauhaus. Envisaging a new world and a quest for simplicity and functionality were among the principles of the Bauhaus. Walter Gropius established the revolutionary school for artists, architects and industrial designers in the German city of Weimar in 1919. In a period in which only a small elite could afford products designed by artists, the Bauhaus worked from the ideal of making beautiful and functional design available to all. The school's groundbreaking ideas, which later exerted worldwide influence, found their echo in the Netherlands in architecture, design and education. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen explores this Netherlands ? Bauhaus network for the first time in a major survey.

[.en] Herman Hertzberger (born 1932) is one of the most important and critically influential figures in international architecture of the last 50 years. He has consistently championed a fundamentally humanist modern architecture, rooted in its place and history, while simultaneously opening up new possibilities for dwelling. Today Hertzberger is rightly regarded as the worlds foremost designer of schools, a building type he has almost singlehandedly redefined. His innovative and fundamentally humane workplaces constitute some of the most compelling contemporary reinterpretations of this type of building. In this monograph, acclaimed author Robert McCarter examines Hertzbergers most important architectural works through analysis of the design process and guiding ideas, particularly as these reflect Hertzbergers engagement with the Modernist tradition, architectural history, urban space and the way we experience it. Robert McCarter is a practising architect, author and Professor of Architecture at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis. His monographs on Louis I. Kahn and Frank Lloyd Wright were finalists for the inaugural Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) International Book Awards, 2006.

[.en] Following the largescale production of new buildings in the second half of the twentieth century and the quietude of the economic crisis, a new practice is emerging. Finding ways to reuse the existing building stock plays an important part in that practice. Towards a more sustainable use of resources and social capital, this focus on the transformation of the existing housing stock is a promising assign ment for architects and developers. In the Netherlands, all eyes are on the postwar housing that, built in the reconstruction period, is due for servicing on technical grounds alone. This challenge isn’t new. Social change has gone hand in hand with readjustment of the housing stock for centuries. This volume of DASH brings the current challenge into historical and international perspective, with essays that shed light on the subject from different standpoints as well as newly documented examples – from Diocletianus’s palace in Split to The Albany in London and recent projects as the Klushuizen (DIY houses) on U.J. Klarenstraat in Amsterdam.
