This catalogue is published on the occasion of the 19th Serpentine Pavilion designed by Junya Ishigami. The publication presents an overview of Ishigami’s past projects, together with an extensive documentation of sketches and research material for the Serpentine Pavilion. Isabelle Gaudefroy, Director of Programing at Fondation Cartier, introduces Ishigami’s projects from the past decades and makes connections between his past projects and the design for the Serpentine Pavilion. Beatrice Galilee has written about Ishigami’s key concepts and ideas that he has been exploring in his practice. An interview between Hans Ulrich Obrist and Junya Ishigami offers the unfiltered voice of the architect, in which he talks about past and future projects as well as architecture in general.

Ishigami’s design for the Serpentine Pavilion 2019 takes inspiration from roofs, the most common architectural feature used around the world.The design of pavilion is made by arranging slates to create a single canopy roof that appears to emerge from the ground of the surrounding park.Within, the interior of the Pavilion is an enclosed cave-like space, a refuge for contemplation. For Ishigami, the Pavilion articulates his ‘free space’ philosophy in which he seeks harmony between man-made structures and those that already exist in nature.

The Serpentine Architecture Programme expands for 2016, with four Summer Houses joining the Serpentine Pavilion. The Serpentine Pavilion, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), is an 'unzipped wall' that is transformed from straight line to three-dimensional space, creating a dramatic structure that by day houses a café and free family activities and by night becomes a space for the Serpentine's acclaimed Park Nights programme of performative works by artists, writers and musicians. Kunlé Adeyemi's Summer House is an inverse replica of Queen Caroline's Temple - a tribute to its robust form, space and material, recomposed into a new sculptural object. Barkow Leibinger were inspired by another, now extinct, 18th Century pavilion also designed by William Kent, which rotated and offered 360 degree views of the Park. Yona Friedman's Summer House takes the form of a modular structure that can be assembled and disassembled in different formations and builds upon the architect's pioneering project La Ville Spatiale (Spatial City) begun in the late 1950s. Asif Khan's design is inspired by the fact that Queen Caroline's Temple was positioned in a way that would allow it to catch the sunlight from The Serpentine lake.

Verano en la Serpentine
Diez años de pabellones efímeros por de los mejores arquitectos

Desde el año 2000, la Serpentine Gallery, situada en los Kensington Gardens de Londres, encarga a algunos de los mejores arquitectos del mundo diseñar pabellones de verano, estructuras erigidas junto a la propia galería y con una vida de solo tres meses. El edificio de la institución, construido en 1934 para albergar un pabellón de té, abrió sus puertas en 1970 como espacio donde exponer la obra de artistas modernos y contemporáneos como Matthew Barney, Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelley, Louise Bourgeois o Rachel Whiteread.

Los pabellones del programa, concebido en el año 2000 por la directora de la Serpentine, Julia Peyton-Jones, son obra de arquitectos o equipos de diseño internacionales que, en el momento de la invitación, todavía no habían completado ningún edificio en Inglaterra. Desde la fecha del encargo hasta su terminación no pueden transcurrir más de seis meses. Se trata de una iniciativa arquitectónica totalmente única que atrae cada verano a unos 250.000 visitantes. Los pabellones de la Serpentine siempre se encuentran entre las cinco exposiciones de arquitectura y diseño más visitadas del mundo, según la encuesta anual que The Art Newspaper realiza sobre el número de asistentes a museos y galerías. Según el arquitecto Richard Rogers: «Los pabellones, construidos con un presupuesto limitado, son increíblemente buenos. No sería capaz de señalar uno que me haya gustado más que los otros: todos son obras maestras».

Este libro es el primero en reunir todos los pabellones de la Serpentine. Sendas entrevistas a la directora de la Serpentine Gallery, Julia Peyton-Jones, y al co­director, Hans Ulrich Obrist, completan la descripción de los pabellones, ilustrados con croquis originales de los arquitectos y fotografías de las obras completadas.

Philip Jodidio estudió Historia del Arte y economía en la Universidad de Harvard y fue editor jefe del diario francés Connaissance des Arts durante más de veinte años. Ha publicado numerosos artículos y libros sobre arquitectura contemporánea, entre los que destacan las monografías sobre Tadao Ando, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel y Zaha Hadid, así como la serie Architecture Now!, todos ellos editados por Taschen.
