While completing the Almannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum in southern Norway in 2016, celebrated Swiss architect Peter Zumthor asked Norwegian scholar Mari Lending to engage in a dialogue about the project. Departing from the ways in which Zumthor's pavilions frame the barely visible traces of the industrial exploitation of zinc in the 1890s, the conversation took unexpected turns. In meandering, impressionistic style and drawing on Zumthor's favourite writers, such as Johann Peter Hebel, Stendhal, Vladimir Nabokov, and T.S. Eliot, their exchanges explore how history, time and temporalities reverberate across the famous architect's oeuvre. Looking back, Zumthor ponders on how a feeling of history has informed his continuous attempts of emotional reconstruction by means of building, from architectural interventions in dramatic landscapes to his design for the redevelopment of Los Angeles' LACMA on a grand urban scale. This small, beautifully designed new book records the conversation between Zumthor and Lending, illustrated with photographs by the renowned Swiss architectural photographer Helene Binet.

[.en] In 2017, as part of the MEXTRÓPOLI Festival, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor (born 1943) was invited to Mexico City to participate in a series of public discussions about architecture and the city. ‘Zumthor in Mexico’, the first publication in Arquine's new ‘Swiss Architects in Mexico’ series, collects the architect's Mexico City conversations in a handsome volume, featuring edited transcriptions of Zumthor's talks with journalist Nicolás Alvarado, artist Pedro Reyes and architects Tatiana Bilbao, Gloria Cabral and Rozana Montiel, among others. In these lively interviews, Zumthor explains his personal approach to architecture as it applies to a wide range of subjects, such as: where design ideas come from, how ideas move from conceptualization to materialization, the importance of the landscape and the natural environment to design and his sense of the responsibility of the architect in the present.

Peter Zumthor, 2009 Pritzker laureate, is one of the best known architects of the present day. Widely admired for his precision and thoroughness, he creates buildings that are responsive to their location and function, and that are remarkable both for their materials and the atmospheric quality of the spaces they enclose.

This five-volume overview of his work to date presents forty-three buildings and projects, including some that have never been published before. On 856 pages with over 750 photographs, plans, sketches, drawings and watercolors, and with texts written by Peter Zumthor himself specially for this monograph, it documents a wide range of projects from several world-famous buildings to some that never left the drawing board.

With photographs by Hélène Binet, Hans Danuser, Ralph Feiner, Thomas Flechtner, Walter Mair, Joël Tettamanti, and others.

Thomas Durisch, born 1963 in Minneapolis, grew up in Binningen near Basel. He graduated in architecture from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, in 1990 and  worked at Atelier Peter Zumthor 1990–94. In 1995 he established his own studio in Zürich. Designed by world-renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2011 is the 11th in the Gallery's annual architecture series. This catalogue captures, in glorious photograph detail, Peter Zumthor's unique architectural design, carefully illustrating Zumthor's evocative play on scale, colour, material and light with the Pavilion's surroundings. Peter Zumthor has stated that his design "aims to help its audience take the time to relax, to observe and then, perhaps, start to talk again - or maybe not." With a refined selection of materials he has created a contemplative space that evokes the spritual dimension of our physical environment, successfully emphasising the role the sense and emotions play in our experience or architecture. With an essay by German filmmaker and writer Alexander Kluge, plant index and an exclusive text by Peter Zumthor.

Las termas de piedra de Vals. Peter Zumthor.

Peter Zumthor
