Stretching across multiple nations, including the entirety of Switzerland, the area has a long history of settlement and has witnessed various approaches to living and building. The Alpine region is thus a mosaic, dotted with different settlements at various formative stages, and the contrast and blend between French and German cultures creates a place where two worlds coexist in a discontinuous manner. Through contemporary and historical photographs, this issue explores traditional wood and stone architecture typologies of the Alps.

[.en] For plenty years, many popular mountain resorts have seen largely uncontrolled development consisting of the multiplication of archetypal chalet-style houses. This is usually accompanied by roadbuilding for private cars. In order to protect these tourist destinations and their natural environs from further uncontrolled development, the author investigates different settlement structures such as Andermatt, Avoriaz, Verbier, Zermatt, and Whistler-Blackcomb. On the basis of detailed graphical analyses, she develops groundbreaking strategies for urban densification and suitable mobility management, which can also be transferred to other tourist áreas.

To what extent has the sublime influenced architecture in the Alps, from the early days of tourism to the present? Prompted by this question, the author analyzes Alpine architecture in its historical context and offers a critical assessment of contemporary tourism. This is a book that inspires us to reflect on the future of building in the Alps and on our relationship with nature.
