[.en] The three works selected for this volume on Tadao Ando are not recent in chronological terms. However, the quality of being novel is one of the least appropriate ways to approach the Japanese architect’s work, which is wholly disassociated from this. The three houses – in Osaka, Ashiya (Hyogo), and Tokyo – can be described as symbolic junctures in Ando’s exploration of residential design, with clear differences in their respective scales, plans, and contexts, but with an identical radical approach through which the building’s form reacts to these conditions and transforms them into its intrinsic qualities. Includes an extensive text and magnificent photographs by Yukio Futagawa.

[.en] At the western end of the Les Halles district of Paris, ‘the Bourse de Commerce’ has existed quietly through the tumultuous centuries of the historical city. A project to transform this historic building into a contemporary art museum has finally reached completion. It was opened at last, COVID-19 pandemic permitting.

The project involved a challenging construction of erecting a cylinder space finished with raw concrete inside the central rotunda. Boldly inserting a new space into an old structure, creating a dialogue between the new and the old , and breathing new life into the space; the concept is the extension of that of ‘the Punta della Dogana’ in Venice.

The client for both projects, from Venice to Paris, is François Pinault. In fact, my first project with Mr. Pinault was ‘the François Pinault Foundation for Contemporary Art’ on the Île Seguin in Paris in the early 2000s. It was discontinued for various reasons, which in turn led to a series of projects in Venice, and then a second challenge back in Paris.

Under unique site conditions on Île Seguin, we focused our energy on the theme of inheritance of urban memory. The results of this exploration have been transformed and utilized in the current project. What is more, the starting point of the series of conversion projects with was ‘the Nakanoshima Project IT (Urban Egg )’, which was conceived in the 1980s. lt was a project to revitalize a public hall in my hometown Osaka, which I created without being commissioned by anyone. Because it was an independent proposal, I put a lot of effort into the drawings and poured my energy into the model. In the end, the city authorities did not cake me seriously, and I ended up simply adding it to my list of unbuilt projects, but I had always carried the ideas that I discovered there close to my heat. Thus, the central court at ‘the Punta della Dogana’ was the fruit of two decades of work, and the cylinder space at ‘the Bourse de Commerce’ was the new challenge I took on after three decades.

Every architecture is created under different conditions, from the surrounding environment to the program, or the client's personality. By making the most of these differences, we create a place that can only be created there. In every job, a different architectural story is born. [...]

Tadao Ando's remarkable Casa Wabi dots the Pacific coastline of Mexico with structures by Alberto Kalach, Alvaro Siza, Kengo Kuma, Gloria Cabral, Solano Benitez, Jorge Ambrosi, and Gabriela Etchegaray. Founded in 2013 by renowned Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, it combines artist residencies, a gallery, and living quarters with classrooms, gardens, and public space. Tadao Ando centers the foundation on a 312-meter-long wall; his trademark concrete structures radiate off it, capped in woven palm tree leaves for ventilation. These local palapa-style roofs are often the only element distinguishing indoor and outdoor spaces, an effect complemented by wooden shutters in place of paned glass windows. Other unusual native building materials include Mexican parota wood and marmolina. Led by director Carla Sodi, Casa Wabi challenges architects and artists to contemplate nature deeply, as it provides new tools for area residents. Casa Wabi is both a world-class architectural destination and a model for new strategies of creative intervention within economically depressed communities.

El documental ‘La casa Koshino’ recorre toda la serie de localizaciones escénicas de la casa que Tadao Ando proyectó, entre 1979 y 1981, para la diseñadora de modas Hiroko Koshino. Semienterrada en una parcela situada en la ciudad de Ashiya en Japón, la casa estuvo formada, en su inicio, por dos únicas cajas paralelas de hormigón unidas por un pasaje subterráneo y posteriormente se amplió con un estudio curvo en 1983.

Arquitecto. Tadao Ando (Osaka, 1941). El arquitecto japonés galardonado, entre otras muchas distinciones internacionales, con el premio Pritzker de Arquitectura en 1995, colgó en su juventud los guantes de boxeador para formarse como arquitecto sin pasar por ninguna escuela de arquitectura. Un aprendizaje autodidacta lleno de lecturas y viajes por África, Europa y Estados Unidos, la gran influencia del movimiento moderno y un minucioso estudio de la arquitectura tradicional japonesa, avalan su intento de reconciliar en su obra modernidad y tradición: “me interesa el diálogo con la arquitectura del pasado, pero el pasado se debe filtrar a través de mi propia visión y experiencia”.

Realizador. Rax Rinnekangas (Rovaniemi, 1954). Director cinematográfico, fotógrafo, periodista y escritor nacido en Rovaniemi (Laponia, Finlandia). Aunque poco conocido en nuestro país, este polifacético artista es toda una institución en Finlandia, donde ha recibido sendos premios nacionales de literatura y fotografía: The State Prize for Photography (1989) y The State Prize for Literature (1992). Sus obras son reconocidas internacionalmente y premiadas en numerosos festivales, destacando la Mención de Honor del Jurado del 25º Festival de Montreal por el documental Villa Mairea. Su trabajo ha sido igualmente motivo de exposiciones en diferentes lugares: Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía de Madrid (2003), Museo Sachsenhausen de Berlín (2003) y Centro de la Imagen en México DF (2007).

Autor del libreto. Alberto Campo Baeza. Autor de los textos del libreto de esta edición, conjuntamente con los arquitectos Ignacio Bosch Reig y Juan Moreno Seguí, Catedrático y Profesor Titular de Proyectos de la Escuela de Arquitectura de Valencia.

Alberto Campo Baeza: Arquitecto y Catedrático de Proyectos de la Escuela de Arquitectura de Madrid. Formado bajo la maestría de Alejandro de la Sota, Julio Cano Lasso, Aburto, Moneo, Cabrero y Javier Carvajal, ha dado clases en diversas universidades de todo el mundo: Zúrich, Lausanne, Dublín, Nápoles, Virginia, Copenague, Weimar, Kansas o Columbia. Galardonado con multitud de premios, los más recientes son los de la Bienal de Buenos Aires (octubre 2009) por su guardería para Benetton en Venecia y por el museo de la memoria de Andalucía en Granada. Está nominado para el Arnold W. Bruner memorial Prize 2010 de la American Academy of Arts and Letters. Cree en la arquitectura como idea construida, y que sus componentes principales son la gravedad que construye el espacio y la luz que construye el tiempo.
