[.en] The Neue Nationalgalerie on the Berlin Kulturforum is an architectural icon as well as the crowning conclusion of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s life work. An outstandingly successful and sensitive refurbishment and modernization project was carried out for the building’s most significant overhaul since its opening in 1968. It complies with the requirements of a contemporary museum exhibition facility, as well as monument-preservation guidelines. David Chipperfield Architects developed the renovation concept under the motto of "As much Mies as possible."

This publication provides deep insight into the planning, execution, monument preservation, and restoration from the perspective of those involved. The exemplary handling of the historical fabric is presented in design documents and numerous large-format photographs that impressively illustrate the design stage, the construction site, and the refurbishment results.

This book provides a survey of worldwide experiences of city rooftop re-use strategies such as building-on and integrating new volumes within the existing buildings. Twenty-four case studies illustrate a multiplicity of projects that innovate on traditional typologies by offering multiple ways of living, working and using public services in the city. They all share a symbiotic method that exploits the extraordinariness of the “top condition” offered by the roof to foster a subtle change in the whole building's urban identity. They test new technologies for light and quick construction methods in order to deal with structural constraints and the needs of inhabitants. City roofscape redesign belongs to an adaptive attitude based on knowledge of the dynamic process of transformation of the physical realm, far removed from regressive preservation-only behavior. It represents a remarkable way of coping with urban regeneration issues.

While Director of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius built the Auerbach House in 1924, his first private house in the Bauhaus mode. Thus, this in cooperation with Adolf Meyer created building is one of the most important milestones for the early years of the Bauhaus. Certainly, the most outstanding feature of the house is the authentic interior color scheme. It was first discovered during the restoration that Alfred Arndt designed color schemes for every interior wall. Preserving almost all original details, today the house glows again with the 37 original pastel tones. This book also recounts the moving story of the Auerbachs, a married Jewish couple who helped to shape Jena’s social life at the turn of the century, befriended Edvard Munch, fought for women’s rights, and whose house symbolized resistance to the expulsion of the Bauhaus from Weimar.

Long-term strategies need to be developed to meet the resulting challenges. How can growing cities be planned without neglecting their urbanity? How can urban spatial growth be managed in tandem with social, environmental, cultural, and economic challenges? Between 2013 and 2018, the Urban Design Lab worked in over twenty emerging cities in Latin America and the Caribbean. They developed dynamic planning tools that trigger transformative urban processes by engaging and empowering local communities. This handbook not only explains the context and emerging problems faced by the cities of Latin America and the Caribbean, but also proposes solutions for typical difficulties encountered within those urban conglomerations.

Experimental dwelling forms—CoHousing Cultures—are entering the mainstream. But to what extent are they accessible and affordable for all, including people with more or less money, with or without refugee experience, with or without disabilities?
