[.en] The Green Energy Laboratory (GEL) is a research center for low environmental impact building technologies on the the Minhang Campus of Jiao Tong University in Shanghai. Created in collaboration between the university and the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea Protection, it was designed and built by the Florentine architectural firm Archea Associati in 2012. This book features critical essays, technical drawings, photos of the construction site and the completed project, and illustrates the harmony of this structure through its perfect blend of tradition, architectural ingenuity, and sustainability. The GEL building is based around a central courtyard with a retractable roof. The top, or third floor, is recessed in relation to the main block, with a steeply sloped roof to house solar panels. The outer shell of the building’s double skin is composed of terracotta elements designed to form pictograms common in the Chinese language. This landmark project represents a symbol of intercultural cooperation between Italy and China.

[.en] Industrial archeologists study towns and landscapes created over the past several centuries that were planned to integrate home and work. This ground-breaking book features architectural case studies of company towns in 48 locations - workers' villages, mill towns, mining towns, cite ouvrieres, bruk stader, colonias industriales, villaggi operai - many of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Extensive illustrations and images document the ways in which architectural experiments responded to the entrepreneurial initiatives that were the basis of these communities. The authors, two esteemed professors whose work focuses on the conservation of industrial heritage, examine the role of architectural and urban culture in creating the identity of these unique towns, and the consequences of their abandonment.

[.en] This book brings together a collection of recent projects and classic architectural designs by Mario Cucinella Architects, and explores the sensitive, creative, and sustainable solutions that architecture and nature can provide in answer to global challenges. The way forward is approached via constructive strategies of the past and from the plant world, looking at how man has adapted in every latitude, climate, and culture. Buildings of the past considered resources like wind, sun, rain, and local materials, sustainable strategies that are increasingly important today. Research in the plant world inspires buildings that can adapt to the climate and resonate with the environment. Each project featured here is accompanied by a wealth of illustrations and drawings, and an in-depth analysis that interprets all aspects of construction.

[.en] Between 1960 and 1965 Gio Ponti worked on the headquarters of the religious congregation Notre Dame de Sion, located on the Janiculum Hill in Rome. His contribution to the project has been unidentified until recently. In 2014, the building was converted to house the Catholic University of America and the Australian Catholic University. This occasion gave architects of AeV Architetti the opportunity to carry out historical and archival research on the original project, the results of which are presented here. The book is enriched with the addition of detailed original drawings of the furnishings that still exist 50 years after the building was designed.

Monograph dedicated to an unknown project by Gio Ponti: the mother house of the religious congregation of Notre Dame de Sion, built in Rome between 1960 and 1965. The reasons and circumstances as to why the building has remained anonymous till now is unknown. The complete collection of project pencil drawings on tracing paper, preserved at the CSAC archives in Parma, have never been opened and are published here for the first time. In 2014, the building needed to be converted to house two important foreign Catholic universities (the Catholic University of America and the Australian Catholic University). There was a need for student residential and teaching buildings, which gave the architects Cinzia Abbate and Carlo Vigevano (AeV Architetti Associati) who edited this publication, the opportunity to carry out historiographic and philological research on the original project to establish the restoration project plans for the modern structure. The building was revealed thanks to the contribution of several experts of Ponti’s work: Maristella Casciato, Margherita Guccione, Salvatore Licitra, Elena Tinacci, Marina Kavalirek. The book is enriched with the addition of very detailed original drawings of the furnishings that still exist 50 years after the project was designed.

[.en] This survey of contemporary winery architecture around the world profiles 30 wineries, and explores how the new generation of growers are incorporating a thoughtful approach to architectural design into their wider public-facing identity and mission. Following his earlier book, which explored winery architecture in Italy, the author has selected wineries in Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Oceania to illustrate how quality and sustainability have become priorities in the construction process. Responding to the increasing interest in travelling to see first-hand where wine is produced, he examines how wineries are creating well-designed and engaging spaces that are in tune with the surrounding landscape, highlighting the connection between the building, its surroundings, and the agricultural community.
