[.en] The presented residential projects in Vienna originated from a desire to develop living concepts that strengthen the sense of community and contribute to a society based on solidarity - building groups and participative projects, neighbourhood homes, temporary or permanent social forms of living and working for marginalised groups such as the homeless. Private homes can be downsized if there are more communal spaces. This reduces the need for land and property and gives the community room for leisure and other opportunities. Ulrike Schartner and Alexander Hagner from gaupenraup+/- explain the starting point and strategies of their work. Robert Temel and Isabella Marboe present the development of communal forms of building and living based on important precursors and trends.

[.en] The history of housing can also be told as the (cultural) history of a city from its agricultural settlement by the Celts to the social housing of the present. Within this dual history, political and economic developments, as well as social norms, came to be reflected in forms of housing that, at the end of the twentieth century, increasingly drew critique. Under the influence of international developments, this has led to the diversity characterizing society and housing construction today. In this book, Wolfgang Förster initiator of the International Building Exhibition ‘Vienna: New Social Housing’ explores how the sociocultural history of a city can be told through the development of its housing.

[.en] With the IBA_Vienna 2022, which was announced in 2016, the Austrian capital is taking on the challenges of an International Building Exhibition for the first time. The focus on ‘New Social Housing’ refers to Vienna's historical core competence in housing construction and to the most pressing question for the development of European cities today: in light of current changes, how can cities remain inclusive, livable, and affordable, and what can comprehensive neighborhood development contribute to realizing these aims? On the occasion of the interim presentation in 2020, the future.lab at the TU Vienna and IBA_Vienna 2022 will offer a first summary of where things stand, allowing experts from research, planning, politics, and practice to articulate positions.

Carl Pruscha is an unusual architect. His works are found in New York, Kathmandu, and Vienna. Far removed from each other, these three geographical areas profoundly influenced his outlook and career. In the United States Pruscha planned visionary and utopian projects. He began to deal with the real world in Nepal where the UN had sent him as a consultant in 1964. In this foreign culture the young architect grew with the challenge. Aside from complex development proposals for the Kathmandu Valley he created remarkable buildings that blend tradition and Modernism in close harmony with their natural and landscape environment. Following his return to Vienna in 1974 he became visibly engaged in academic and social issues. As rector of the Academy of Fine Arts, the man-about-town bohemian became a prominent figure in Vienna’s architectural scene. In this book essays by Manjushree Thapa and Natalie Lettner, a memoir by Michael Sorkin, photographic documentations by Iwan Baan and Hertha Hurnaus along with portfolios of Pruscha’s projects cover his eventful life and extraordinary work.

This monograph on the work of Austrian architect Carl Pruscha (born 1936) is divided into the three geographical areas into which his life and legacy falls: the United States, Kathmandu and Vienna. Following his study of architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Pruscha spent the early 1960s at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, constantly in search of inspiration and visions. An invitation by the UN to go to Nepal in 1964 enabled him to establish himself there as a practicing architect, embarking on various construction projects and the Kathmandu Valley Development and Preservation Project. After returning to Vienna in 1978, he became the head of the Academy of Fine Arts. The three sections in this book are accompanied by photographic portfolios by Iwan Baan and Hertha Hurnaus, numerous project documentations and a detailed timeline.

Like a dancing cube shimmering in titanium, the new State Gallery of Lower Austria is placed between the picturesque inner cities of Krems and Stein, and links these with the surrounding natural and river landscape. The spherical curvature and the strongly outward-projecting external walls presented a challenge: titanium shingles and glass panes were individually produced, having been calculated in 3D. Inside, light-flooded areas alternate with daylight-free levels that can be used as required. The project is a strong illustration of the capabilities of the Vorarlberg architectural practice of Marte.Marte. The book documents these ‘Figura Serpentina’ in numbers, data, and facts - supplemented by statements, drawings for publication, and generous picture galleries, in this way conveying a comprehensive understanding of the new State Gallery.

A decade of work by Bernardo Bader is covered in this instalment. In that time, the Austrian architect has steadily built a reputation for his modern take on regional styles. Both the exteriors and interiors of his designs are often clad in wood, with structures framed by clean lines and set in alpine terrains, radiating warmth and comfort. Bader’s outspoken perspective on critical regionalism in architecture has drawn international praise, and he prefers to use locally sourced timber in his work. Presented here are more than fifteen projects, many of them houses, but also kindergartens, an alpine sports centre, an Islamic cemetery, a railway station, a chapel, a hotel, and more.

[.en] The 20th anniversary of the Vienna architecture office querkraft is being marked by the publication of a first monograph about its work to date. It features unconventional and poetic buildings and designs, underlain by critical questioning tasks and a pragmatism that does not contradict bold solutions. In addition to documenting querkraft's most important works, the book is full of anecdotes about its office history. The architects are unusually open, not only revealing the secrets behind two decades of friendly collaboration in their collective practice, but also granting insight into the professional reality of working as an architect. querkraft's current works include the first car-free Ikea furniture store in Vienna, a residential complex in Paris, and the Museum fur Konkrete Kunst in Ingolstadt.

The curriculum focuses on the development of conceptual and practical skills for creating future-oriented architecture - on experimental investigation of atmospheric, phenomenal, and visual effects, which provides intelligent solutions for contemporary forms of dwelling and being but which should also satisfy "feasibility criteria". "Re: Futures" uses texts, digital visualizations and descriptive architectural sketches to document the work created over recent years, and thereby reveals a spectrum of contemporary design methods and future-oriented architectural themes.

If there was a Vienna school of superior contemporary interior design, Elsa Prochazka would be a prototypical representative: Her "interiors seem to invite tactile participation, demanding the involvement of the body as an agent of the mind" (Otto Kapfinger). This quote could stand equally for her buildings. Prochazka developed and disseminates her conceptional approach within the framework of her professorships and her international lecturing activities. The book closes the gap in the documentation of significant female Viennese architects.

[.en] Otto Wagner is considered as the "father of the Viennese modernism" and one of the most important international architects. The publication on the MAK exhibition illustrates the resonance of Wagner's oeuvre by protagonists of early modernism as well as his influence on his contemporaries, students and subsequent generations of architects and designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Joze Plecnik, Leopold Bauer, Rudolph M. Schindler, Frank Lloyd Wright, Auguste Perret, Frei Otto, Aldo Rossi and Robert Venturi/Denise Scott Brown. With generous and often unknown image material the book illustrates Wagner's influence on international architecture from the turn of the century to the present, and thus a link between the intricate relationship of modernism and postmodernism.

[.en] Designed by Adolf Loos in his later years, these two houses are twin examples of the architect's plain, unadorned style of architecture, despite their difference in size and budget. Both Villa Moller (1926-27) in Vienna and Villa Müller (1928-30) in Prague are illustrative of his 'Raumplan' design method. Loos applied a utilitarian approach in using the entire floor plan that would only later receive greater appreciation with the advent of postmodernism, an innovative spatialisation comprising sequences of spaces drawn in three dimensions. Photographed by Yoshio Futagawa, the two houses and the spatial brilliance of Loos come to life in an eclectic symbiosis with modernism.

Hermann Kaufmann is a pioneer of modern wood construction in Europe. His oeuvre developed in 25 years ranges from commercial and agricultural construction to residential facilities, community centres and schools to hotels and precisely mirrors the conversion from classic world construction techniques to the options of new wood materials. The community centre in Ludesch, completed in 2006, received the highest international awards and sets construction-biological and ecological standards for the future. The book offers a detailed insight into Kaufmann’s technical and spatial innovations and conveys his use of material and construction to match the situation. The holistic professional image founded in Kaufmann’s biography does not start and end with “pretty architecture” but practices construction as a part of the responsible handling of nature and landscape.

Dominique Perrault (born 1953 in ClermontFerrand, lives and works in Paris) is one of France's star architects. He became internationally known through the construction of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, which was completed in 1995. In his architectural designs, whose strict formalism is often reminiscent of minimalist sculpture, he always integrates urban planning considerations.
With the DC Tower 1, the French architect Dominique Perrault has created a new landmark for Vienna. Located directly on the Danube, the narrow tower, visible from a great distance, ensures a stronger connection between the younger districts and the traditional city center. At the same time, it moves Vienna closer to the water. Austrian artist Markus Krottendorfer has captured its elegant, versatile appearance and the highly complex technological inner life in a photographic essay, highlighting the many exceptional facets of the building. The history of the origins and vision of this project, which has also been important in terms of urban development, are at the center of two discussions lead by Austrian architect journalist Christian Kuhn with Dominique Perrault and real estate developer Thomas Jakoubek.

‘Friedrich Kiesler – Life Visions’ introduces a visionary of the Viennese Moderne movement. The artist, designer, architect, stage designer, and exhibition designer Friedrich Kiesler (1890–1965) influenced European and American architecture and art scene with his avant-garde contributions; his oeuvre remains a source of inspiration to this day. The catalogue illustrates Kiesler’s entire oeuvre and discusses his theory of "correalism" concerning the relationship between works of art, humans, and space, as well as his innovative exhibition design. Contributions from contemporary artists such as Leonor Antunes, Céline Condorelli, Verena Dengler, Lili Reynaud-Dewar, Apolonija Sustersic, and Rirkrit Tiravanija give an insight into Kiesler’s importance today.

The Zacherlhaus is located in the heart of Vienna, just 180 meters from St. Stephen's Cathedral, and is one of the most important buildings created by the Otto Wagner School. It was built in the years from 1900 to 1913 and designed for its owner Johann Zacherl by Joesef Plecnik, who later taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and from 1925 worked on the urban renewal of Ljubljana. It was the first combined residential and commercial building of modern style in the historic inner city and is one of the best known buildings in Vienna.
