[.en] Although most of Inken and Hinrich Baller's buildings were developed within the tight constraints of the social housing program in West Berlin in the 1970s and 1980s, they always offer more than the standard: slenderness, lightness, large balconies, complex spatial relationships across multiple floors, and outdoor green spaces. With their unconventional residential and public buildings, the Ballers' creations are today as much as ever examples for high-quality and affordable housing and intriguing urban spaces. During visits with current residents of these buildings, photographs of the lively and lived- in architecture were taken. A collection of archive material, original plans and essays complement these images to present a complete picture of these multifaceted buildings. Accompanies the exhibition of the same name at Deutschen Architekturzentrum Berlin, 04 March - 24 April 2022.

[.en] The Neue Nationalgalerie on the Berlin Kulturforum is an architectural icon as well as the crowning conclusion of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s life work. An outstandingly successful and sensitive refurbishment and modernization project was carried out for the building’s most significant overhaul since its opening in 1968. It complies with the requirements of a contemporary museum exhibition facility, as well as monument-preservation guidelines. David Chipperfield Architects developed the renovation concept under the motto of "As much Mies as possible."

This publication provides deep insight into the planning, execution, monument preservation, and restoration from the perspective of those involved. The exemplary handling of the historical fabric is presented in design documents and numerous large-format photographs that impressively illustrate the design stage, the construction site, and the refurbishment results.

With its focus on the preliminary course, this last book of the 14-volumes series explains how students “develop towards practice from day to day.” The educational principle behind it, "Jedermann ist begabt" (everyone is talented), was central to teaching at the Bauhaus from 1919 to its conclusion in 1933. [.en] The 'new urban municipality of Berlin', also called Greater Berlin, was created 100 years ago, on 1 October 1920, following a ground-breaking administrative reform. This was a century-defining milestone that transformed Berlin into a world city. The old city of Berlin was merged with 7 other cities, 59 rural communities, and 27 estate districts. As a result, the city's area increased from 66 to 878 square metres, its population from 1.9 to 3.9 million people, virtually overnight. But Greater Berlin did not remain a fixed entity. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, new planning and development projects continued to transform the greater urban area, which has grown, seemingly without end, far beyond the boundaries of Berlin.

The two volumes of Unfinished Metropolis are dedicated to the past and future of Greater Berlin. The first volume offers an insight into an array of different topics, such as Berlin's role as the capital of Germany, its relationship with Brandenburg, and the historical, economic, and social conditions that have driven the growth of the urban area over the centuries. The second volume delves deeper into the designs for the future. [.en] The Frankfurt-based architecture firm Stefan Forster Architekten (SFA) has from its founding in 1989 maintained a special focus on housing. They made their name in the years following Germany’s reunification, when dozens of prefabricated ‘plattenbauten’ in the former GDR needed refurbishment and modernization. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding housing structures, SFA carefully adjusted existing buildings to the new needs of fewer people and more humanness in the shrinking cities of the newly formed federal states in the reunited country’s east.

Since then, SFA have moved on, exploring the topic of housing in increasingly dense metropolitan environments and creating a remarkable and manifold body of work in this field. Their designs comprise large-scale public multiunit blocs, townhouses, at times by way of transforming former office and public administration buildings. ‘Stefan Forster Architekten: Housing 1989–2019’, the firm’s first-ever monograph, features thirty designs that exemplify SFA’s approach and philosophy and highlights how the firm has continuously worked on raising the standards of residential architecture.

‘Stefan Forster’ founded his own architecture firm in 1989 in Darmstadt, today located in Frankfurt, after having worked in Berlin and Mannheim.

The iconographic model of the US Air Force Hangar developed from this work was a true “turning point in building”: the structure designed represents an almost futurist promise of a fully industrialized building culture, the conceptual image of which also became the direct inspiration for various architectural avant-gardes. Stressing Wachsmann attempts to finally place Konrad Wachsmann’s achievement appropriately in architectural history and to critically compare the mental and material conditions involved in the construction of buildings at that time and today.

[.de] Die schöpferische Wiederherstellung beschädigter Gebäude war nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg besonders in Bayern ein wichtiges Thema der Architektur. Als Pionier dieser Entwicklung wirkte der Münchner Baumeister Hans Döllgast (1891–1974). Seine bedeutendsten Leistungen sind die Reparaturen der Alten Pinakothek, der Basilika St. Bonifaz und der großen städtischen Friedhöfe.

In der Nachfolge von Döllgast haben vor allem zwei seiner Schüler beispielhafte Werke geschaffen. Karljosef Schattner (1924–2012), der langjährige Diözesanbaumeister des Bistums Eichstätt, hat in der Bischofsstadt bedrohte Bauten wie das Alte Waisenhaus gerettet und zeitgenössisch erweitert oder historischen Gebäuden wie dem Ulmer Hof durch funktionale Ergänzungen eine neue Nutzung gegeben. Beim Schloss Hirschberg hat er einen modernen Trakt mutig vor die Südfassade gesetzt. Josef Wiedemann (1910–2001) war ein herausragender Architekt des Münchner Wiederaufbaus. Als eines seiner Meisterwerke gilt die interpretierende Rekonstruktion der stark zerstörten Glyptothek am Königsplatz.

The Munich architect Hans Döllgast (1891–1974) was one of the pioneers of this development. His most important achievements include the repairs to the Alte Pinakothek, the Basilica of St. Bonifaz and the main municipal cemeteries.

Hans Döllgast was succeeded above all by two of his students, whose work can be seen as exemplary. Karljosef Schattner (1924–2012), for many years the diocesan architect of the Bishopric of Eichstätt, saved threatened buildings in the episcopal city such as the Old Orphanage by adding a contemporary extension, or gave a new lease of life to historic buildings such as the Ulmer Hof by means of functional additions. In the case of Hirschberg Palace he boldly placed a modern wing in front of the south façade. Josef Wiedemann (1910–2001) was an outstanding architect of the reconstruction of Munich. The interpretative reconstruction of the badly damaged Glyptothek on Königsplatz is regarded as one of his masterpieces.

[.en] Adolf Meyer was Walter Gropius’s right-hand man, his planner and close confidant. As early as 1910, they jointly created the Fagus Factory, one of the most important modernist buildings. The experimental single-family home “Haus am Horn” was built for the first Bauhaus exhibition, in the summer of 1923 in Weimar. The house was planned by Georg Muche (design) and the architectural department at the Bauhaus. Adolf Meyer and Walter March were responsible for construction management. 

The book about the project was compiled in the summer of 1924 and became the third volume of the Bauhausbücher. Following an essay by Walter Gropius that supplies information on the “Housing Industry,” Georg Muche presents the design of the model building. Adolf Meyer then describes its technical execution, giving details on the companies involved.
