[.en] This book chronicles and analyses the role of the perspective within the history and evolution of landscape architecture and design. The first part of the book examines perspectives produced at key stages of the profession’s history, beginning with their origins in Renaissance art, and moving chronologically into present day practice. It charts how both linear and atmospheric perspective helped visualize imagined landscapes, first in paintings, later real spaces, and expanding from private gardens into designs for public spaces. Used both as a visualization tool preceding construction and as a persuasive tool for publicity and prestige afterwards, it has always played a role in influencing the understanding of landscape. Shown through key images, perspective visualization has resonated between artistic influences, media, and technology, yet its role has evolved differently than it has in architecture. In distinct contrast, landscape perspectives must convey positive experiences of being outdoors while communicating key design ideas, forms, and materials. The second part of the book is an instructional chapter, which outlines and describes the perspective’s key characteristics and variables. Perspective types are explained in an easy to understand way. Step by step procedures for using grids, constructing spaces, and fine-tuning pictorial composition, encourage readers to construct perspectives themselves. The third part of the book is an inspirational chapter with many diverse examples from international landscape architecture offices and practitioners. This extensive gallery showcases the perspective’s remarkable versatility as a stage for projects of all sizes, as well as its capacity for storytelling and expression. The many eye-catching images illustrate the perspective’s power in the digital age. With its focus on history, theory and practical aspects of the perspective and its specific role in landscape architecture, the book is an invaluable reference for researchers, students, and designers.

[.en] Landscape architects rely heavily on graphics to communicate content and ideas. From large-scale master plans and strategic visions, to design concepts and specific moods, through to types of vegetation and precise construction details – at some point everything has to be explained on paper. This handbook focuses on areas which, even in the age of digital media, are still staples of the profession: drawing, graphics, and projections. Both instructional and inspirational, it covers the basics of landscape-architectural representation in an easy-to-understand way, encouraging readers to draw their ideas and develop their own graphic language and style. Showcased in these pages are many examples from landscape architecture offices worldwide, offering practical guidance and ideas in key thematic areas:
  • Introduction to drawing tools, applications, and effects
  • Symbols in different scales, styles, and abstraction levels
  • Basic principles for layout and lettering
  • Fundamentals of orthographic and parallel projections
  • Drawing in contemporary landscape-architectural practice

[.en] For those who have ever wondered why we have trees in cities or what makes the layout of cities like Paris and Amsterdam seem so memorable, ‘City Trees: A Historical Geography from the Renaissance through the Nineteenth Century’ by Henry W. Lawrence provides a comprehensive and handsome guide to the history of trees in urban landscapes. Covering four centuries of development in the cities of Europe and America, this book shows how trees became integral to urban landscapes by looking at the historical evolution of the spaces in which they were planted and how these spaces were used.

Reflecting on the impact trees have had on what many consider to be the fundamental aspects of city life—people, buildings, social and economic activity—Lawrence draws on graphic materials, written descriptions, local histories, and archival research to provide a unique look at the tree’s role in urban landscape history. Primarily concerned with aesthetics, power, and national traditions, Lawrence reflects on the differing impacts city trees have had on multiple aspects of culture, from their roles as symbols and their representation of economic prosperity to the differing ways nations planted their trees, which gradually blended into an international style of urban planting.

Complete with fascinating illustrations, City Trees will appeal to those interested in urban history and geography as well as the general public interested in cities, cultural history, and landscape design.

[.en] Since they established their Paris-based firm ChartierDalix in 2008, architects Frédéric Chartier und Pascale Dalix have realised some fifteen buildings in France, ranging from multi-unit housing and student dormitories to schools to the transformation of a design centre for car maker Renault, a logistics hub, or office and retail spaces. Of equal importance as the actual design work is their research to ChartierDalix, in which the architects aim to bring architecture and ecosystems to harmonious concurrence. exemplified by the Biodiversity School and Gymnasium in Boulogne Billancourt near Paris which they completed in 2014. This first monograph explores ChartierDalix's visionary research and the designs derived from it, with the Boulogne Billancourt school as core of the presentation. Their intense investigation of architecture and nature and the interplay between the two is highly topical and the book a rich inspirational source for anyone interested in the future of building.
