[.en] The ninth volume of the revised ‘Villages and Towns’ series completes the journey through the Iberian Peninsula that began with volume eight. The focus here is on the rough terrain and harsh natural landscape that stretches from central to north-west Spain. Four villages were selected to represent the architecture that has developed in this seemingly inhospitable climate. Going beyond the heritage of vernacular architectures, the study also examines how these communities live in harmony with local features. Rather than trying to control nature, they give it respect, doing their best to become part of it. With photography by Yukio Futagawa and texts by the late Maria Lluïsa Borràs.

[.en] Collection of Hideyuki Nakayama's work, film-brochure style. This collection of architect Hideyuki Nakayama's work is presented in the form of brochures for five films, each featuring one of his architectural pieces. It records in as much detail as possible the production processes for the movies that filmed the status of the five works after Nakayama completed them and moved on, as well as his design concepts for architecture and the elements he works especially hard to incorporate. The featured works include 2004 from his previous works, the latest mitosaya, and House and Road , an unreleased piece. The novel design by Idea Oshima adds charm to this volume.

👤 Nakayama was born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1972 and completed his master's degree at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, in 2000. After working for Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects, he established Hideyuki Nakayama Architecture in 2007. Since 2014, he has been an associate professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts.

Focusing on the heritage of vernacular architectures, it looks at how emphasis is placed on the landscape and climate, harmony among the community and local features, and issues of environmental preservation and natural lighting. Local houses of a certain region share the same underlying, invariable elements, which is the very reason for their achievement of diversity integration that is a rarity among today's rapidly changing architectural trends. [.en] ‘Kazuo Shinohara: 3 Houses’ analyses three major works, House in White (1966), House in Uehara (1976) and House in Yokohama (1984), by the late Kazuo Shinohara (1925 2006), one of the most important and influential Japanese architects of the twentieth century. The reader will discover a comprehensive selection of plans redrawn to commensurate scale from original working drawings, unpublished holograph sketches, and archival photographs. Contributions from Shinohara's teaching colleagues David B. Stewart and Shin-ichi Okuyama situate the three houses within Shinohara's oeuvre and afford new insight into the architect's distinctive working methods. A foreword by the well-known architect Ryue Nishizawa confirms Shinohara's continuing influence in the present.

[.en] The focus of the sixth instalment in the 'Villages and Towns series is the highly diverse, mountainous region of Europe known generally as the Alps. Stretching across multiple nations, including the entirety of Switzerland, the area has a long history of settlement and has witnessed various approaches to living and building. The Alpine region is thus a mosaic, dotted with different settlements at various formative stages, and the contrast and blend between French and German cultures creates a place where two worlds coexist in a discontinuous manner. Through contemporary and historical photographs, this issue explores traditional wood and stone architecture typologies of the Alps.

The workshop of Studio Mumbai, headed by Bijoy Jain, consists of open air spaces in a rustic setting surrounded by trees. There, a variety of skilled craftsmen, architects and engineers collaborate in the same space, engaging in, exercising and practicing architecture in a manner that aspires to transcend its own physicality. In this way, the process and act of communication has come to characterise the studio, its creative process and its output. An intimate look at the workings, outlook and inspiration of the practice is given, which includes the story of its background and setting, along with an interview with Jain and detailed profiles of significant projects in India: Tara House, Leti 360 Resort, House on Pali Hill and the Copper House, to name a few.

Fujimoto adopts a philosophy towards architecture that returns to a primordial, intuitive moment in the process of design, free of constraints and open for possibilities. This volume, the first in a new contemporary architecture series, presents his manifesto for architecture and in so doing showcases the architect's works and projects to date. Recently realized buildings, such as the T-House' and House O' are presented alongside designs, sketches and models of unrealized works and competition entries.

Beginning with the Aomori Museum of Art, the selection of works features a range of scales and functions, from which emerges a portrait of the architect’s philosophy and approach. Interestingly, Aoki chooses to present images of his built works in black and white, appended with detailed drawings and project data in a separate section. Several texts also intersperse the chronologically presented projects, which include Mitsue Primary School, Yeosu Expo Pavilion, BMW Art Car Collection, and more.

Built in the early 1950s in São Paulo, Lina Bo Bardi’s Casa de Vidro (Glass House) was the first real architectural project she completed after her arrival in Brazil. Built as a home for herself and her husband, it clearly demonstrates how architecture and design should keep a distance from individuals, society or community, and the natural environment – a stance that would come to underlie all of the Italian-born architect’s subsequent works. Photographed by master architectural photographer Yukio Futagawa, Casa de Vidro still appears as its designer intended, a prototype that responded to a new society, rising directly from the earth and embedded in the surrounding jungle.

Designed as a scrapbook containing a wide-ranging collection of ideas aimed at starting an exploration, the publication blends observations and comments with sketches and photographs.

Frank O. Gehry is an irrefutable architecture giant of our time, with a successful career spanning over decades between late 20th and 21th centuries. As a home for such a globally-acclaimed architect, this residence is surprinsingly small in size and is particularly impressive in that the architect still enjoys to this day, with a long-time affection, the comfort of living in this house. The fact that this ever-challenging, ever-progressing architect continues to live in and take care of the same house for over 30 years and values the original spirit that was initially embodied, shows the magnitude of achievement he feels with the house. Furthermore, the fact that this residence involves the extension and remodeling of an existing ordinary house makes it all the more unique and revolutionary.

Fron as aerly as the beginning of the 20th century, the great wave of modern architecture has had a major lasting impact, despite a temporary stall due to WWII, on architecture throughout the world, and especially on residential architecture that is directly connected to lifestyles of everyday people. This surge has directed our living spaces to move into a different phase, while it continued to mature with the changes of society, delivering the ‘contemporary house’ to every corner of the world by the end of the century. Never before the 20th century has there been a time when such amount of space was devoted to works of residential architecture in the history of architecture around the globe, representing the extent of popularization and individualization that architecture has undergone. While standardization, industrialization and manualization in response to vast/diverse masses were in keeping with the principles of modern architecture, they simultaneously brought about many examples of ‘facilitation’ and ‘losing of substance’ that only rely on imageries of silhouettes. Expendable ‘silhouettes’ transformed themselves as ‘styles’ such as Mod, PoMo and Decon, but in a larger context, they have been, since the modern times, a ‘bird in a cage’ of modernism that remained unchanged. No matter how the style changed, the fundamental frame and its requirements never did: the house was always there to wrap around people’s everyday living i.e. lifestyle, reflecting what goes on inside to show it to the outside.

Attempting to form an overview of the experimentation that has gone into his efforts over the past two decades, Sou Fujimoto compiles a multifarious and richly illustrated collection of works concepts, new ideas, and unrealised projects that is remarkable both for its sprawling diversity and for its consistency in the pursuit of an ideal. As Fujimoto writes in his introduction, Beneath even the boldest, most daring proposals lie many years of patient trial and error. Each project description contains index numbers of other projects that bear a resemblance to it, enabling readers to trace an interconnected web of interrelated concepts through his entire body of work.

The husband and wife architect team of Takaharu and Yui Tezuka established their Tokyo-based practice in 1994, and have since been recognised for their personal approach to spatial design through both critical acclaim and several awards. In this third instalment of their ‘Architecture Catalogue’ series, their desire to convey the magnificence of architecture is readily apparent, expressed through the couple’s thoughts and convictions on why they make architecture. It offers an intimate look at their work, combining personal ideals with a comprehensive overview of projects. Featuring more than 50 projects, many of them houses, and richly illustrated with photos and drawings.
