[.en] This instalment focuses on two British practices: Jonathan Woolf and Sergison Bates. Editor Ana Leal uses the word “serendipity” to refer to their respective bodies of work, describing how “the reinterpretation of the site, to acknowledge the culture and tradition of the place through local materials and techniques, is a clear example of an answer to contemporary needs… dictated by an extraordinary sensitivity.” Along with the highlighted projects it includes a conversation with Jonathan Sergison, Stephen Bates, and Tony Fretton. Featured are Woolf’s Lion Rooms, Lost Villa, and Brick Leaf House, as well as various urban and suburban housing projects by Sergison Bates.

[.en] This special double issue extensively features both built and unbuilt work by Álvaro Siza. The Portuguese architect has developed a large number of projects, and the relationship between the realised and the concept is central to this examination of his career. Being equally attentive to the architect’s built and unbuilt works allows a global understanding of the plurality of situations that are found in his oeuvre to emerge. The first volume features finished works like the Nadir Afonso Museum, 611 West 56th Street in New York, and the Mimesis Museum, while the second volume of numerous unbuilt works includes sketches, drawings, and plans, as well as in-depth analysis.

[.en] The new generation of Mexican architecture is represented by Taller Héctor Barroso and Estudio Macías Peredo, two offices whose work emerges in harmony with the surrounding site, generating spaces with an emotional content that evoke memory and highlight the habitable quality of their architecture. Projects by the former, established by Barroso in Mexico City in 2011, often take advantage of the natural resources of each place, including local materials and construction methods. Estudio Macías Peredo was launched in 2012 in Guadalajara, with a special focus on the local context. This developing interest has become the central theme of their approach.

[.en] Toolbook is not a theoretical book. It is a practical book on the practice of architecture in the daily life of architects. A book that is dedicated to identify and expose the diferente ways of thinking and doing architecture. More than presenting completed projects and works, it was interesting to investigate the approaches, methodologies and work philosophies of different architects in different contexts. Without complexes or gimmicks, demonstrating how each one evolves ideas and projects throughout their development stages. With transparency and informality, further demonstrate that these conceptions and developments are in close articulation with the spatial and organizational models of the workshops, contributing to the success of ongoing ideas and projects. In brief, a book as an objective or metaphorical tool, concrete or latent, useful for students as well as architects of all ages or for the general public who is curious about how architecture is made and thought.

[.en] One of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura, Casa das Artes was designed in the early 1980s and completed construction in 1991. The building is located in the gardens of a neoclassical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century. The competition programme proposed a cinema, auditorium, an exhibition gallery, and required that the surroundings be preserved as they were. According to the architect, “Work was not allowed to interfere with the garden. Omitting was more important than proposing, deleting was more important than designing, and simplicity more important than composition.” This monograph reflects his very minimalistic approach.

"Casa de Chá da Boa Nova (1958/63) will be the possibility to practice the new references in particularly favorable conditions. The safety of a landscape and a challenging topography, which are wished unalterable, a kind of guarantor of an universal harmony, was setting and place for a designed building in contemplation / understanding of nature, not being, however, mimetic or passive, but generous identification and active interpretation. See yourself as the rocks before thoroughly conditioned the shape, gain cut and special sculptural force against the white plaster and become into spectacular fireworks´ project." - Alexandre Alves Costa, architect

When Álvaro Siza finished what is known as the Boa Nova Tea House in the early 1960s, it marked the beginning of his career. Set in a challenging topography, the building stands as a symbol of architecture’s identification with, and active interpretation of, the landscape. The composition of its low, volumetric expressiveness and surrounding rocks demands a respectful attentiveness, which until recently had been steadily deteriorating. Under the supervision of Siza, a full restoration of the building’s public spaces and a deeper intervention in its service areas has been undertaken. Beautifully photographed, with plans and original sketches by the architect.
