Siamo entrati subito in sintonia, perché anche io ho sempre pensato che etica ed estetica sono le due facce di una stessa medaglia. Questo ospedale sarà un modello di eccellenza medica, sostenibilità ambientale, indipendenza energetica e armoniosa distribuzione dello spazio. Vogliamo utilizzare le risorse della terra, l'acqua e il sole, i migliori traguardi della modernità, quelli veri. L'ospedale sarà edificato sulle rive del Lago Victoria, la vegetazione sarà l'orizzonte dei piccoli ospiti, gli alberi come metafora del processo di guarigione". Il libro racconta la storia di come nasce il Centro di eccellenza in chirurgia pediatrica a Entebbe, in Uganda. Renzo Piano racconta come l'approccio alla sostenibilità sia stato utilizzato anche nelle scelte progettuali, utilizzando gli stessi principi costruttivi delle case tradizionali ma in modo innovativo. La struttura è stata infatti realizzata con la terra di scavo per costruire i muri portanti in terra cruda con l'antica tecnica del pisé. L'ospedale possiede inoltre un impianto di circa 2.500 pannelli fotovoltaici in copertura, che soddisferanno parte del fabbisogno energetico. Come negli altri ospedali di Emergency, è presente anche un giardino con 350 alberi: il verde è un elemento importante per il recupero e per la guarigione dei pazienti, come testimoniano recenti studi medici internazionali. Come tutte le monografie curate e pubblicate dalla Fondazione Renzo Piano, il volume è stato realizzato utilizzando il materiale inedito proveniente dagli archivi: schizzi, modelli, documenti di cantiere, testimonianze dirette dei protagonisti di questo progetto.

Ilustrados con dibujos de los propios arquitectos, y enriquecidos con entrevistas en profundidad, reseñas biográficas y análisis de las obras, estos pequeños libros quieren ofrecer retratos pixelados de los maestros actuales, informativos y críticos a la vez.

El libro ‘Piano o el constructor’, con 96 páginas y en tapa blanda, comprende quince textos que recorren la vida y obra de Renzo Piano. La colección de artículos se inicia con una biografía sucinta, y se cierra con una extensa conversación en su casa de Punta Nave donde el arquitecto genovés pasa revista a su larga trayectoria, desde los años de formación hasta los proyectos actuales en todo el mundo y el apoyo a los jóvenes desde su Fundación. Entre ambas piezas se reproducen en orden cronológico textos que comentan diferentes episodios de su carrera, en ocasiones en contraste con el enfoque de otros arquitectos: así el aeropuerto de Kansai explora la gran escala y la sede de ‘The New York Times’ la gran altura, mientras la iglesia del Padre Pío o el convento de Ronchamp ofrecen respuestas diferentes al encargo religioso. Pero quizá son los museos el tipo arquitectónico en el que ha sido más influyente, desde el mítico Pompidou que realizó con Richard Rogers o esa obra maestra absoluta que es el Menil, y hasta su primer encargo en España, el Centro Botín en Santander, realizaciones todas ellas en las que ha unido el refinamiento tecnológico, el amor a la artesanía y la sensibilidad ciudadana.

[.es] “Lo móvil” es una cualidad de indudable presencia en la configuración de nuestro entorno, y por ello importante a tener en cuenta por el proyecto de arquitectura contemporáneo. El espacio de “lo eventual” muestra multitud de experiencias en relación con ello, en las que distintas disciplinas artísticas y técnicas han venido interactuando a lo largo del tiempo encontrándose unas con otras, muchas veces en sus zonas fronterizas, expandiéndose así hacia nuevos caminos. Jugando un papel especial está la arquitectura, capaz de colaborar y enriquecerse con otros campos sin dejar de ser, por ello, una importante área específica y propia de conocimiento. Así ocurre en determinadas intervenciones desarrolladas en el “espacio evento” por el arquitecto Renzo Piano junto a equipos interdisciplinares de colaboradores, verdaderos laboratorios experimentales. Tal es el caso del espacio musical y escénico para la ópera Prometeo (1984) y del espacio expositivo para la Fondazione Vedova en Venecia (2000-2009), ya en la actualidad de nuestro siglo XXI. En ellos, la producción de movimiento se presenta como una estrategia proyectual que abre nuevas y diversas posibilidades de una experiencia de la arquitectura como auténtico “acontecimiento”, lo que resulta además de especial interés en intervenciones de espacios patrimoniales, como sucede en ambos casos. Todo esto podría llevarnos a una mayor comprensión del proyecto arquitectónico en el complejo momento actual: un proyecto generador de una arquitectura más dinámica, abierta, participativa y social de cara al futuro.

[.en] Studying the history of a project through its drawings, models, the client's profile, pictures of the construction site and the finished building, is a fundamental excursus, but it cannot replace the deeper understanding that materializes during a visit to the place. I reread Silvia's diary during my trip from Genoa to Athens, flying at an altitude of 30,000 feet, with the concentration required to grasp the nuances of her experience and retrace through the eyes of a young architect her visit to all the buildings designed by Renzo Piano and RPBW, which I too have equally studied over the years. I really appreciated her passionate story and trust that her wonderful adventure will spark the curiosity of any reader fond of architecture.

This book explores Renzo Piano’s formative years, before the major achievement of the Centre Pompidou. The striking success of an architect little more than thirty years old in the famous 1971 international competition has long tended to eclipse his previous experience, which is fundamental to understanding the genesis not only of the Beaubourg but all Piano’s subsequent work. The dense ramifications of his experience, spreading in many different directions, have now finally been retraced by Lorenzo Ciccarelli, the first scholar to have access to the archives of the Renzo Piano Foundation.

The chapters of the book seek ‘to offer a coherent and many-sided understanding of the magmatic energy that drove Piano’s remarkable works, while preserving the rhapsodic qualities of a true “portrait of the artist as a young man”.’ Immediately after graduating, Piano built a series of radical and innovative experimental structures, combining his mastery of prefabrication with an instinctive interest in industrial design. The roofs built out of pyramidal elements (1964-1965) and inflatable components (1966); a carpentry workshop (1965); a building to house his family’s construction company (1966-1968); his shell structures (1966-1968); a detached house (1968-1969); his own office building at Erzelli (1968-1969); and the pavilion of Italian industry at the Osaka Expo (1969-1970): these were the prototypes in which Piano developed the design strategies and construction techniques that would characterise the Centre Pompidou and the celebrated masterpieces of later decades. They were constructional experiments that revealed the teachings the youthful Piano had absorbed from his masters in Italy (Franco Albini, Marco Zanuso, Giuseppe Ciribini) and abroad (Jean Prouvé, Louis Kahn, Zygmunt Makowski and Robert Le Ricolais). Piano had long sought out and frequented these masters, travelling indefatigably in those years between Europe and the United States. 

The last part of the account deals with his partnership with Richard Rogers, the ‘elder brother’ who introduced Piano to the British context. Together with Rogers and Gianfranco Franchini, he devised the competition entry for the Centre Pompidou. 

The fascinating stories entwined in this book are an essential instrument for illuminating and reinterpreting the early years of one of the greatest architects of our time with previously unpublished archival materials.

Renzo Piano ha resumido su actitud y su método en el nombre de la oficina. ‘Taller de construcción’ remite tanto a la condición física de la arquitectura como a su fabricación artesanal: forma contemporánea de la ‘bottega’ tradicional, el ‘building workshop’ orquesta el trabajo coral de maestros, oficiales y aprendices en el diseño, ‘pieza a pieza’, de unas construcciones materiales que deben albergar el flujo inmaterial de la vida de las gentes, amén de insertarse sin esfuerzo en el tejido urbano o el paisaje natural. Al doblar el cabo de los 80 años, el acervo de experiencias del arquitecto —entendidas también como piezas independientes que se enhebran en su biografía como cuentas de un rosario— es tan copioso que sólo puede iluminarse brevemente con algunos destellos taquigráficos, para presentar los cuales elijo el artificio de la relación alfabética.

La poesía puede y debe ser popular: el empeño lírico de Renzo Piano está al servicio cabal de las personas, porque no cabe separar su estética de su ética. La imaginación conduce a la invención: es posible soñar con los ojos abiertos, pero el carrusel de imágenes sólo se justifica por la innovación de que hacen gala sus edificios. La arquitectura es al cabo un arte: oficio, construcción y artesanía, pero también artefacto configurado con pautas visuales que no saben evitar la belleza. La narración exige naturalidad: cada obra es un relato de extraordinario recorrido, ocasionalmente insólito, y sin embargo siempre narrado con la naturalidad de lo evidente. El orden es producto de la obstinación: por más que las pautas geométricas y la racionalidad constructiva establezcan mecanismos de orden, este es al final resultado de la tenacidad iterativa del proyecto.

Poesía popular, imaginación inventiva, arquitectura artística, narración natural y orden obstinado: cinco rasgos del creador Piano, al que quizá necesitamos para ‘poéticamente imaginar arquitecturas narrativamente ordenadas’, un modesto acróstico inspirado por el muy notorio de su compatriota Verdi, con cuya obra tiene tantos puntos de contacto la que ha sabido interpretar a compositores de su tiempo como Pierre Boulez o Luigi Nono. Lírica y musical, la arquitectura de Renzo Piano es también incansablemente inventiva, capaz de ofrecer narraciones sugestivas y escrupulosamente ordenada y exacta en sus detalles constructivos y en la orquestación de los usos, porque se apoya a la vez en la observación minuciosa del comportamiento humano y en la voluntad de servicio para mejorar las vidas individuales en el ámbito común de la vida colectiva.

En el documental ‘Visitas de obra’ el realizador acompaña durante meses al arquitecto por diferentes obras, poniendo en evidencia los retos que Piano, junto a sus equipos internacionales de arquitectos, ingenieros y capataces, lanza a la tecnología mediante la utilización de materiales y estructuras cada vez más ligeras. La película evoca, asimismo, la dimensión emocional y poética de su arquitectura.

Arquitecto. Renzo Piano (Génova, 1937). Se formó como arquitecto en la universidad politécnica de Milán, pero desde su infancia vivió la cotidianidad de las obras junto a su padre constructor. Su amistad con Jean Prouvé también influyó notablemente en los inicios de su trayectoria profesional: en 1971 funda “Piano & Rogers” con Richard Rogers, coautor del centro Georges Pompidou de París y en 1977 crea “L’atelier Piano & Rice” con el ingeniero Peter Rice hasta 1992, cuando finalmente establece su firma actual “Renzo Piano Building Workshop”, con sedes en París y Génova. Entre otros galardones, ha recibido el premio Pritzker de Arquitectura (1998), el Praemium Imperiale (1995) o la medalla de oro de la Unión Internacional de Arquitectos (2002).

Realizador. Marc Petitjean. Fotógrafo, escenógrafo y cineasta francés. En 1975 realiza su primer documental sobre el artista Gordon Matta-Clark y durante años continúa cuestionando al arte y la creación con sus películas sobre César, Renzo Piano o la École des Beaux Arts de Nancy. A partir del 2000 orienta sus obras a la realidad social, económica y política.

Autor del libreto. Peter Buchanan. Arquitecto y urbanista. Escritor, crítico, comisario y asesor de arquitectura. Durante los años ochenta fue director adjunto de la revista The Architectural Review. Fue comisario de la exposición Renzo Piano Building Workshop: selected projects y autor de los volúmenes ‘Renzo Piano Building Workshop. Completed Works’ (Phaidon, 1995-2008).
