[.en] The redevelopment of historical centres became an important policy field in the era of European dictatorships following the First World War. At that time historical centres were regarded as shabby and as tarnishing the desired image of a magnificent new city, of a showcase of the dictatorship. This led to the widespread demolition of older buildings. Historical streets and squares disappeared and were replaced by new apartments and workplaces for the loyal middle classes, by car-friendly roads and ostentatious new buildings. Nevertheless, the redevelopment of historical centres did not exclusively mean the eradication of the ‘old town’. The aim of the dictatorship in many cases was also the preservation, and often the cultic display, of historical testimonials to past greatness.

The book presents examples of the redevelopment of historical centres in Mussolini’s Italy (Rome, Brescia, Bologna, Naples), in Stalin’s Soviet Union (Moscow), in Hitler’s Germany (Berlin), in Salazar’s Portugal (Lisbon, Évora, Óbidos) and in Franco’s Spain (Madrid, Toledo, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Santillana del Mar). These are followed by a brief summary of the history of the redevelopment of historical centres in Europe. This volume represents the very first attempt to identify the commonalities and differences in the redevelopment of historical centres in dictatorships in Europe in the first half of the 20th century.

[…] Eadie herself bemoans the dearth of documentary and archaeological evidence where Irish towers are concerned. Two other papers amply demonstrate just how crucial these are to our understanding and perception of the tower. Shannon Marguerite Fraser and Thomas Addyman's ‘The Price of Ambition: Making the House of Muchalls Fit for Lordship’, combines documentation, standing building and below-ground archaeology to present a cogent re-analysis of a much-studied, but nevertheless still complicated, standing building set within an equally complex landscape. Their erudition leaves the reader distinctly feeling that they know precisely what Andrew Fraser of Stoneywood and Muchalls had in mind when he set about rebuilding his inherited property in the 1580s, how its numerous internal spaces were intended to be used and by whom, and also, to an extent, how the grounds around it – the ‘setting for lordship’ – were developed to enhance his vision. Likewise, Taco Hermans in his ‘Towers and Households: Eating at Polanen Castle’ who benefits from large-scale archaeological excavation, including most importantly results from botanical and zoo-archaeological analyses, to present a highly revealing picture of lordly life at this Dutch castle site around 1300, including such fascinating conclusions as the fact that the lordly family itself only lived there during the winter months, and that their household of servants lived not in the tower itself but in a separate building across the courtyard. As an archaeologist myself, I was left wondering what image of lordly life might have been forthcoming in Eadie's Irish towers had just one of them been excavated.

In his introduction, the editor, Richard Oram, articulates why and how ‘Turris’ came about – namely, a frustration borne of the fact that our current understanding of the structures we today describe as ‘tower houses’ is still inextricably linked with ‘general surveys of medieval military or militarised architecture’ – namely castles – and as such are regarded ‘primarily as a military artefact or an exercise in military engineering’. Well, this collection of papers certainly goes some way to correcting that perception, focussing the reader's attention on the non-military function of ‘towers’. From the very outset of the castle's emergence in the eleventh century, as Pamela Marshall so eloquently demonstrates, the overtly ‘military’ towers (donjons) that lay at the core of these first castles were ‘primarily vehicles for the display of power’, where ‘security was not deemed to be a priority’, and whose ‘architecture suggests a predominantly ceremonial function’. All the other papers reinforce this ‘non-military’ image of the ‘tower’, each in its own, special way. Even Scotland's mightily impressive Doune Castle, in Stirlingshire, for long depicted by architectural historians as ‘representative of a particular vision of a militarised aristocratic society in which nobles employed large forces of mercenary retainers’ is persuasively repackaged by Oram, an historian, as a ‘symbolic projection of status and authority’. [.en] As people make considered choices about their own lives and deaths, cremation has become an increasingly popular option in Europe, representing a recent but accelerating change in funerary practices. What do these spaces actually look like? What role does architecture play in these rituals? Considering precisely these questions, the authors of ‘Goodbye Architecture’ embarked on a unique tour of European architecture. For the first time, the spaces and practices of cremation―the sites of some of our deepest desires and fears about life and death―receive serious architectural consideration. A wide range of facilities are documented in this volume with extensive illustrations and analyses, providing a glimpse of an essential architecture often hidden in plain sight.

[.en] European shopping centres are often assumed to be no more than carbon copies of their American precursors – however the wide-ranging case studies featured in this book reveal a very different story. Drawing connections between architectural history, political economy and commerce, together these studies tell us much about the status and role of modernist design, the history of consumption, and the rapidly-changing social, urban, and national contexts of post-war Europe. The book's eighteen chapters explore case studies spanning the continent on both sides of the Iron Curtain, from Britain and The Netherlands to Sweden and the USSR. The focus is on the three decades following the first introduction of the new typology in 1945, tracing the variety of typological manifestations that occurred in widely different contexts, from Keynesianism to communism to military dictatorship. The book also explores the role of the shopping centre in urban reconstruction, and examines how new shopping centres were designed to elicit specifically modern behaviour and introduce new conceptions of collectivity into citizens' everyday lives.

Affordable housing is currently in short supply in many European cities. Persuasive models and outlooks for the future are needed if demand is to be met. Yet how can costs be reduced without restricting the quality of housing? This book documents current outstanding housing developments from all over Europe, which are distinguished by their quality but also by the fact that they were realised with reduced construction costs. Design solutions, deliberate material selection, specific building processes and explicit planning requirements all contributed to this result. The projects are documented in depth with photos, texts, floor plans and detailed drawings. The introduction includes three essays that examine the topic from different perspectives.

Affordable housing is an enduring political challenge. Cities have endeavored to set international standards for this important field of architecture since the 1920s. Planners must work within a socially motivated tradition to find exemplary solutions both at the political and architectural level. This building catalogue documents over 130 residential buildings dedicated to affordable housing. It presents floor plans, large photos, key data, and clear diagrams, providing a comprehensive overview of the solutions being tested today. The publication is rounded off with ten affordable housing concepts that were designed as part of the Housing for All competition, organized by the Frankfurt Department of Planning and Housing, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, and ABG Frankfurt Holding. Renowned architecture practices based in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and France were invited to submit design concepts for building sites in the Hilgenfeld area of Frankfurt. These concepts will reignite the contemporary discourse on affordable housing - in Frankfurt and beyond.

[.en] This book is about renewing the city with room for people, about historical overlay and respect for the building traditions of the past, and about new architecture on a human scale. The book takes its departure in the European tradition of the dense classic city. Focus is on physical and spatial relationships, development patterns, access principles and their connection to public streets and squares: the elements that make for a rich urban life. Rooted in European traditions, this book is envisioned as a professional "instruction manual" that offers examples of a more humane direction for urban conversion. The examples in the book come from major European cities and are set in a broad conceptual framework. An historical outline reviews urban development over time. The chapters are organized into tool-oriented themes that help urban planners and architects put the concepts into practice and relate them to their respective challenges.

The question of composition and spatial qualities arises in every urban design concept or intervention in the spatial structure of urban public squares. How are the essential elements involved: dimension, proportion, alignment, cohesion, accesses, shaping of focus point and of edges like surfaces and materials? How do they contribute to a character of urban space with which residents can identify? Comparing historical examples with current designs aids one in visualizing spatial effect. Similar to a floor planmanualfor buildings,Squares allows the user to evaluate spatial conditions for movement and rest based on comparable existing urban squares. The book offers the planner a comparative example for most conditions (shape, size, location, topography, and so on). Seventy European urban squares are presented and explained with the most important characteristics in a consistent manner in as-built plan, ground plan, section, and axonometric projection.

[.en] Josef Albers is widely recognized as a crucial figure in 20th-century art, both as an independent practitioner and as a teacher at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College and Yale University. Albers made paintings, drawings and prints and designed furniture and typography. Arguably the least familiar aspect of his extraordinary career was his inventive engagement with photography, only widely known after his death, including his production of approximately 70 photocollages that feature photographs he made at the Bauhaus between 1928 and 1932. These works anticipate concerns that he would pursue throughout his career--the effects of adjacency, the exploration of color through white, black and gray, and the delicate balance between handcraft and industrial and mechanical form. Albers's photographs were first shown at MoMA in a modest exhibition in 1987, when the Museum acquired two photocollages. In 2015 the Museum acquired ten additional photocollages, making its collection the most substantial anywhere outside the Albers Foundation. This publication reproduces each of the photocollages Albers made at the Bauhaus, presenting the scope of this achievement for the first time. An introductory essay by Sarah Hermanson Meister situates them within the contexts of modernist photography, the Bauhaus ethos and of Albers's own practice.

Europe has always been a continent of cultural diversity, a fact that is particularly reflected in its art and architecture. However, the appearance of European cities is not only shaped by traditional and local building forms, modern European architecture has also added a wide scope of constructional styles. These are influenced in equal terms by regional factors, such as the multifarious climatic and landscape zones of the continent, and international trends.

This volume presents European architecture in all its multitude – from private residences via residential and office complexes up to cultural, educational, research, and religious institutions, and infrastructure projects. Unexpected materials and modern designs are presented along with new interpretations of centuries-old building traditions, while modern building methods focus on highly topical themes such as sustainability, re-use, and recycling methods. The compilation of buildings from such a wide scope of typologies makes this compendium not only a comprehensive general reference work but primarily also a nearly inexhaustible source of inspiration.

Architecture in Europe has always been characterized by an inimitable variety of style. Also current architecture, from Estonia to Spain, between Norway, Germany and Greece is inspired by the creative interaction of international design trends with the unparalleled and individual architectural language unique for each country – for private homes and office complexes, religious and cultural buildings, or sports facilities and airports. The building technology of today is also marked by an exciting heterogeneity. Innovations like 3D printing are being applied as well as traditional brick construction, translucent high-tech concrete roofs as well as greened façades. The Atlas of European Architecture showcases the exciting esthetical, technical and typological diversity.
