[.en] For some time now, major developments in highrise architecture havebeen primarily shaped by projects in China. But although roughly one inevery three buildings that reaches a height of 100 meters or more is nowbuilt there, the highrise typology is also increasingly establishing itself inother parts of the world. European cities, for example, are pushing forwardwith the development of their own highrises, and more and more newtowers are being built in Africa. The International Highrise Award 2020presents thirty-one of the most exciting recently completed highrise projectsworldwide that are distinguished by their sustainability, energy- andcost-efficiency and user-friendly design. Each of the projects is discussedand illustrated with photographs and design drawings.

[.en] Bionics is a modern, interdisciplinary science that first emerged in the mid 20th century, combining the study of natural sciences with engineering and technical sciences. The aim is to synthesize knowledge derived from the analysis of natural forms and systems. Since becoming a partnership in 1979, Cervera & Pioz have worked to develop new architecture and city-planning proposals inspired by an integral understanding of the logical principles of flexibility, adaptability, and energy-efficiency that are prevalent in all natural species. In 1985 the firm started to experiment with complex and dynamic structures resulting in several revolutionary projects. In 1992, they began their research into biological structures in nature and their application to modern structural engineering and architecture. A direct result of these studies was the discovery of a new concept of structure and construction: Bio-Structure.

[.en] David Tajchman's first book about a self-initiated architectural research for a White City-specific High-Rise: the Gran Mediterraneo. Gathering working documents, sketches and rare pictures in an object specifically designed by graphic designer and art director Sara Jassim. In 2016, architect David Tajchman made public a self-initiated high-rise proposal on which he worked in secret during a few months. He decided to propose a new typology of skyscraper, more city-specific for Tel Aviv. Based on his previous observations that a new skyline is appearing in the White City, which according to his experience of the city and his knowledge of the local architectural history, does not take enough into account the 1930s and later Brutalist legacies. His yet unbuilt (but surely to get built) skyscraper is a spontaneous proposal from a foreign architect to the local decision makers, to open their eyes and their mind to other visions, for a more Tel Aviv-specific ver-tical architecture. The Gran Mediterraneo has been widely published as an architectural innovation and has won several awards gaining international recognition, with the recent Architizer A+ Awards 2017 received in New York. During the design process, David sketched, wrote, read and photographed about the various topics involved into his high-rise proposal. This book is an opportunity to share his references, background, research docu-ments, notes, drawings and working (3d) models. The book was first an exhibition-catalogue, presented last September 2016 in Paris in the framework of a solo show entitled ‘Gran Mediterraneo - Project Process Progress’. It contains archive documents on different topics and texts from invited contributors.

The Gran Mediterraneo is an innovative concept of High-Rise that integrates a public automated car-park, operates as the first induction charging station for public and shared electric driverless vehicles in the city (future 'sherut'), and mixes programs of vertical living: residential apartments and hotel, bars and restaurants, farming and public gardens, swimming pools and dead sea spas, co-working spaces for offices and start-ups, educational and events spaces. Innovative also with its topological geometry giving a spiral effect to the high-rise, the Gran Mediterraneo breaks with the global and usual stacking of horizontal slabs wrapped with mirrored glass, aiming to renew Tel Aviv skyline with a 'Unesco proclaimed white city' specific vertical architecture. To be built with white concrete, using the latest construction and digital technologies, the curvy high-rise is filled with mediterranean and dead sea natures.

[.en] ‘The Sustainable Tall Building: A Design Primer’ is an accessible and highly illustrated guide, which primes those involved in the design and research of tall buildings to dramatically improve their performance. Using a mixture of original research and analysis, best-practice design thinking and a detailed look at exemplar case studies, author Philip Oldfield takes the reader through the architectural ideas, engineering strategies and cutting-edge technologies that are available to the tall building design team.

The book takes a global perspective, examining high-rise design in different climates, cultures and contexts. It considers common functions such as high-rise housing and offices, to more radical designs such as vertical farming and vertical cemeteries. Innovation is provided by examining not only the environmental performance of tall buildings but also their social sustainability, guiding the reader through strategies to create successful communities at height.

The book starts by critically appraising the sustainability of tall building architecture past and present, before demonstrating innovative ways for future tall buildings to be designed. These include themes such as climatically responsive architecture, siting a tall building in the city, zero-carbon towers, skygardens and community spaces at height, sustainable structural systems and novel façades. In doing so, the book provides essential reading for architects, engineers, consultants, developers, researchers and students engaged with sustainable design and high-rise architecture.

Dominique Perrault (born 1953 in ClermontFerrand, lives and works in Paris) is one of France's star architects. He became internationally known through the construction of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, which was completed in 1995. In his architectural designs, whose strict formalism is often reminiscent of minimalist sculpture, he always integrates urban planning considerations.

With the DC Tower 1, the French architect Dominique Perrault has created a new landmark for Vienna. Located directly on the Danube, the narrow tower, visible from a great distance, ensures a stronger connection between the younger districts and the traditional city center. At the same time, it moves Vienna closer to the water. Austrian artist Markus Krottendorfer has captured its elegant, versatile appearance and the highly complex technological inner life in a photographic essay, highlighting the many exceptional facets of the building. The history of the origins and vision of this project, which has also been important in terms of urban development, are at the center of two discussions lead by Austrian architect journalist Christian Kuhn with Dominique Perrault and real estate developer Thomas Jakoubek.

#books #architecture | Building Seagram

Building Seagram / Phyllis Lambert ; foreword by Barry Bergdoll
Yale University Press, New Haven [etc.] : 2013
xiv, 306 p. : il.
ISBN 9780300167672
Sbc Aprendizaje A-72.011.27 BUI

The Seagram building rises over New York’s Park Avenue, seeming to float above the street with perfect lines of bronze and glass. Considered one of the greatest icons of twentieth-century architecture, the building was commissioned by Samuel Bronfman, founder of the Canadian distillery dynasty Seagram. Bronfman’s daughter Phyllis Lambert was twenty-seven years old when she took over the search for an architect and chose Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969), a pioneering modern master of what he termed “skin and bones” architecture. Mies, who designed the elegant, deceptively simple thirty-eight-story tower along with Philip Johnson (1906–2005), emphasized the beauty of structure and fine materials, and set the building back from the avenue, creating an urban oasis with the building’s plaza. Through her choice, Lambert established her role as a leading architectural patron and singlehandedly changed the face of American urban architecture.

“Building Seagram” is a comprehensive personal and scholarly history of a major building and its architectural, cultural, and urban legacies. Lambert makes use of previously unpublished personal archives, company correspondence, and photographs to tell an insider’s view of the debates, resolutions, and unknown dramas of the building’s construction, as well as its crucial role in the history of modern art and architectural culture.
