[.en] Delightfully conceived, Ishigami has chosen to present the projects by his office dissected into 500 smaller illustrations and accompanied by some 150 blocks of text. In so doing, the defining lines of the respective projects are rendered ambiguous, and a vague, abstract image of the whole emerges lending itself to new associations and discoveries. Works, projects, plans, photographs, models and research reveal a sensitive and intriguing architecture from this young Japanese office.

[.en] After a long period of expectation for its reprint, a new edition of Another Scale of Architecture is now available. With his words, model pictures, drawings, and corresponding scientific reference materials taken from the catalog (SEIGENSHA Art Publishing, 2010) printed for his solo show at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in 2010, the book has been reorganized with a codex binding, which allows the book pages to open 180 degrees. Five natural elements--clouds, forest, horizon, sky, and rain--are selected as keywords that support Ishigami's architectural thinking, in which various scales are flexibly altered from micro to macro, and from space to time. Possibilities for future architecture are discussed by alternately looking at large-scale models and actual works, and their scientific reference materials.

Junya Ishigami believes there are many differences between conventional architecture, as an artificial environment, and the natural environment – different forms and systems, different degrees of diversity, and different time. Yet the most fundamental difference of them all is scale, from subatomic particles, insects and animals, and the human world, to the global scale and even the incomprehensible vastness beyond our planet. In this book, Ishigami poses questions about how to bring this entire spectrum of scales into the realm of architecture, expanding its concept to embrace fluctuation and vagueness through five themes: Clouds, Forest, Horizon, Sky, Rain.

The first time Junya Ishigami made himself known in Europe, with his proposal for the Japan Pavilion for the Venice Architecture Biennale 2008, he was a young an almost unknown architect who had worked for several years with Kazuo Sejima and had not long with his studio junya.ishigami +associates, founded in 2004. In the Venice pavilion, Ishigami filled all the interior walls of the pavilion with delicate a somehow naïf drawings of gardens and decided to build several greenhouses with real gardens in the outdoor gardens of the building. The following year, he finished the Kanagawa Institute of Technology Workshop, and with only two works he was acclaimed as one of the most innovative proposals of the recent Japanese architecture. Forcing the limits of transparency and lightness in the beginning, his latest works explore in a conceptual way the relationships between the built matter and the nature, in works such as the Botanical Farm Garden in Tochigi, a multi confessional chapel in China or the house and restaurant for a chef in Japan, where the exploration of the tectonic merges with the telluric and the nature.

This catalogue is published on the occasion of the 19th Serpentine Pavilion designed by Junya Ishigami. The publication presents an overview of Ishigami’s past projects, together with an extensive documentation of sketches and research material for the Serpentine Pavilion. Isabelle Gaudefroy, Director of Programing at Fondation Cartier, introduces Ishigami’s projects from the past decades and makes connections between his past projects and the design for the Serpentine Pavilion. Beatrice Galilee has written about Ishigami’s key concepts and ideas that he has been exploring in his practice. An interview between Hans Ulrich Obrist and Junya Ishigami offers the unfiltered voice of the architect, in which he talks about past and future projects as well as architecture in general.

Ishigami’s design for the Serpentine Pavilion 2019 takes inspiration from roofs, the most common architectural feature used around the world. The design of pavilion is made by arranging slates to create a single canopy roof that appears to emerge from the ground of the surrounding park.Within, the interior of the Pavilion is an enclosed cave-like space, a refuge for contemplation. For Ishigami, the Pavilion articulates his ‘free space’ philosophy in which he seeks harmony between man-made structures and those that already exist in nature.

[.en] Lightness, transparency, simplicity, and communion with nature are Japanese architect Junya Ishigami’s watchwords. In his architectural masterworks, which he compares to landscapes, he eliminates the boundaries between exterior and interior space. For the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Junya Ishigami designed an exhibition that reveals, on an unprecedented scale, his latest research into freedom, fluidity, and the future of architecture. On the occasion of this exhibition, presented in 2018, the Fondation Cartier published a book retracing the genesis of the project, including mixed photographs, drawings, models, and all the poetry inherent to Ishigami’s work.

This issue features two architecture giants from opposite corners of the globe. Swiss-based architect Christian Kerez, known for his Chapel in Oberrealta and the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (together with Meinrad Morger and Heinrich Degelo), is presented through a selection of his latest work (2010–2015) that also includes large projects in China. In his turn, Junya Ishigami, who worked at SANAA before establishing his own firm in 2004, and was awarded the Golden Lion at the 12th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010, is featured with sixteen recent projects (2005–2015), among them the Polytechnic Museum Moscow and a Home for the Elderly in Akita.
