[.es] Este volumen, primero de una serie de tres, recoge los proyectos iniciales de Arne Jacobsen, que van de un estilo academicista a otro: el funcionalismo nórdico, que, según la definición del propio arquitecto, es el estilo o, mejor dicho, la liberación del estilo que expresa con toda claridad la función de las cosas. «Rescatar al personaje del polvo y las polillas». Éste era el reto de Vasari al escribir su libro ‘Vidas de los mejores arquitectos, pintores y escultores italianos’, rescatarlos, especialmente, de la tiranía impuesta por las modas. Entre los años 1970–1980, Jacobsen también había sido, como tantos otros, devorado por esa vorágine. Solo se mantenía, y por motivos adicionales, una cierta atracción por su diseño. Arne Jacobsen, su arquitectura, junto con todo el entorno nórdico, representa una línea de trabajo que recoge las distintas características acaecidas durante el presente siglo y que van del neoclasicismo al ‘International Style’, pasando por el funcionalismo nórdico. Jacobsen utiliza un método personal que se va moviendo de manera más precisa a lo largo de su carrera profesional. Un método personal que se explica como necesario para todo arquitecto y estudiante en el ejercicio de su labor: la «capacidad de ver», la de conocer y la de expresar están íntimamente ligadas en ese proceso evolutivo de toda creación que, acotada por pequeños nudos argumentales, se convierte en un proceso involutivo donde cada detalle resultará un mundo. Un mundo que es todavía capaz de despertar emoción.

Ideal geometric forms such as circles and squares have an enduring appeal for architects, but are rarely suited to the contingent demands of modern building programmes and urban sites. Tietgen Dormitory, completed in Copenhagen in 2006, is a triumphant exception. Named after the leading Danish financier C.F. Tietgen (1829-91) and winner of numerous national and international architectural awards, the project began life as the dream of Nordea-fonden who wished to offer students a collegiate alternative to the contemporary norm of living individually or in small groups in private accommodation. Following an architectural competition the foundations vision was given form by the leading Danish architects Lundgaard and Tranberg, who found that the circular geometry, so rare in modern architecture, provided both a telling contrast to the orthogonal discipline of the surrounding buildings in the new-town district of Ørestad North and a perfect way of balancing community and privacy. Tietgen Dormitory is a unique celebration of a unique project. Through numerous specially prepared drawings and photographs and two short but evocative essays, it invites the reader to take an imaginative journey around the building and through the long and fascinating history of circular structures in world architecture - from vernacular dwellings to prefabricated houses, theatres to sports stadia, churches to ideal town plans.

Cebra work offers a quite clear example of the new trend the drawing is nowadays taking for the work of the architect; drawing as a tool of simplification which makes possible projects.The drawing is probably the main tool of work for architects. It is always has been. However, architecture has witnessed during its history different uses of this tool to produce projects. The use of drawing stretched from a means of representation and communication of ideas and concepts to being a device for knowing the world and the himself. However, in the last decades we can observe the drawing be used in a different manner which can maybe foresee a new direction. The realization of architecture has become increasingly complex and complicated. The actors involved in the modification of cities and territories are always more in number and increasingly more difficult to agree amongst each others. The factors to be taken into account are also more numerous and complex. A project of architecture is nowadays an extremely complex process for all the actors involved; most than ever. It is thus not a surprise if a successful approach to architectural projects is represented by simplification of the process. A project is successful when the image and the meaning it conveys are immediately understandable to the several people involved (including final users). The drawing is “in this sense” an incredibly powerful tool for designers to simplify the project and be able to control it. The drawing is gradually passed from a tool for controlling the forms of architecture to a tool for controlling the program of the project.
