[.en] Australian architect Robin Gibson (1930–2014) built prolifically and at expansive urban scales, and his projects also helped to redefine the culture and identity of the major capital city of Brisbane. While he seldom wrote or published on his own architecture, Gibson was well-respected in the city and awarded high honours for his contributions to architecture in Australia. While some critics have attempted to situate him within the conventional field of international modernism, or even brutalism, this volume reveals that his body of work was in fact underpinned by a distinctive vision of Brisbane as a subtropical metropolis, sensitive to climate and place, and alive with people.

While many architects aspire to profoundly transform their cities, very few ever manage to build at a scale that might make this possible. Architect Robin Gibson not only built prolifically and at expansive urban scales, his projects also helped to redefine the culture and identity of one of Australia’s major capital cities.

Born in Brisbane in 1930, Gibson graduated from the University of Queensland in 1954. He spent a brief period working as an architect overseas before returning to his home city in 1957. Here, he established an architectural practice that would go on to design some of Brisbane’s most important civic and commercial environments, including a cluster of what are arguably the most transformative projects ever built in the city: the Queensland Museum, the State Library of Queensland, the Performing Arts Complex and the renowned Queensland Art Gallery.

Though he rarely wrote or published on his own architecture, Gibson had an outsized presence in his home city (at one point being named Queenslander of the Year) and he was awarded the Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal, the institute’s highest honour. His output, however, has been subject to surprisingly little criticism in either mainstream or professional publications. Furthermore, much of this criticism gives us an imperfect understanding of the thinking behind Gibson’s architecture.

While commentators have attempted to situate Gibson within the conventional folds of international modernism, or even brutalism, this book reveals that his body of work, while carrying many of the formal trappings of high modernism, was actually underpinned by a distinctive vision of Brisbane as a sub-tropical city, sensitive to climate and place, and alive with people.

[.en] ‘MMXX’ tells the story of architecture in Australia in the first two decades of the 21st century. Shaped by unprecedented prosperity, urbanisation, uncertainty and internationalisation, the past two decades have produced some of the most significant and diverse architecture in this country. This richly illustrated volume reflects on and evaluates this period, taking the reader on a journey through varying scales and locations – from ambitious city-making projects to finely crafted homes and elegant sheds nestled in the scenic countryside.

Showcasing 59 acclaimed projects completed between 2000 and 2019, the book features work by more than 100 practices. Turn the pages to experience the urban generosity of Harry Seidler & Associates’ Riparian Plaza in Brisbane, visit the irreverent and culture-shaping Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart by Fender Katsalidis, and explore ARM Architecture’s iconic Shrine of Remembrance on Melbourne’s grand axis. Highlighting the impact of the buildings, each is paired with a number that tells a story of occupation: capacity concert audiences, the number of babies born and large crowds gathered to witness moments in history. Alongside the key projects, ten essays by leading thinkers document the cultures and ideas that have shaped architecture today.

‘MMXX’ guides the reader through contemporary architecture in Australia, foregrounding its invaluable contribution to our built environment and inspiring an optimistic future.

[.en] One of Australia’s leading architects, Angelo Candalepas achieved widespread recognition for his winning entry in the 1994 international competition for housing at the Point in Sydney’s Pyrmont neighborhood. Over the next twenty-five years, his Sydney-based firm, Candalepas Associates, has won numerous awards and industry accolades and been widely praised. The first full book dedicated to Candalepas, Angelo Candalepas: Buildings and Projects features a selection of the firm’s key designs through photographs, plans, elevations, drawings, and sketches. Drawing inspiration from past masters of architecture, such as Louis I. Kahn, Carlo Scarpa, and Le Corbusier, as well as eminent Australian architects like Glenn M. Murcutt, Richard Johnson, and Colin Madigan, Candalepas has incorporated their legacy into a wholly original body of work of a quality rarely found in Australian contemporary architecture. Completed buildings that mark milestones in the firm’s development are featured alongside unrealized projects, offering insight into the firm’s future trajectory. The book also includes essays by Spanish architect and educator Alberto Campo Baeza and Sydneybased architect and critic Laura Harding, as well as an essay by Candalepas himself. A comprehensive, lavishly illustrated survey, ‘Angelo Candalepas: Buildings and Projects’ celebrates the outstanding achievements of Candalepas Associates to date.

[.en] The definitive book on modernism in Australia from 1925 to 1975. From the Sydney Opera House and the National Gallery of Victoria to sought-after homes across the country, the pervasive presence of modernism is inescapable in Australia. Led by the likes of Robin Boyd, Harry Seidler and Walter Burley Griffin, modernist architects and designers set out to rebuild at all scales, from vast infrastructure projects, to public health and education institutions, to new centres of culture, consumption and leisure. ‘Australia Modern’ vividly captures this architectural legacy with a survey of 100 significant modern sites, richly illustrated with archival images and newly commissioned photographs. Contextual essays by leading voices in architecture and conservation explore modernism’s influence on every facet of life in Australia and the ongoing challenges facing preservation. Showcasing projects from the iconic and the urban to the everyday, the regional and the lesser known, ‘Australia Modern’ cultivates an appreciation for the modern architects and buildings that will increasingly constitute the heritage of tomorrow.

[.en] The capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia, Sydney has been represented onscreen since the earliest days of cinema. An eclectic combination of tough inner-city suburbs, beachside communities and green outlying exurbs, Sydney offers many intriguing possibilities to filmmakers. The tensions and differences found among its many multicultural inhabitants, poorer and wealthier suburbs and central business district and beaches are reflected, exaggerated, and critiqued in memorable movies such as ‘The Last Wave’, ‘Puberty Blues’, ‘Strictly Ballroom’ and ‘Little Fish’, among many others. Sydney is a city where sun, sports and surf rub shoulders with crime, racial tensions and class divides.

The contributors to this collection take readers on a virtual tour of Sydney, from Kings Cross, the city’s red light district and frequent film location, to the famous beaches, to explore how representations in movies have both played into and influenced how we think of these spaces and those that frequent them. Essays also consider the experimental film group UBU Films, who shot shorts and features in and around Sydney’s inner city suburbs during the 1960s and early 1970s, and the Sydney Opera House, one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks, and its role in movies both Australian and international.

Packed with full-colour photographs, this is the first book of its kind to deal specifically with Sydney and film. It will find a grateful audience among film lovers, casual viewers, tourists and film historians.

[.en] The Architectural Guide Australia presents over 200 projects in the vast island continent that is home to natural wonders, coastal settlements, and tropical climates up north. Each chapter, dedicated to one of the nation’s eight state capitals, presents buildings that represent the major moments in the country’s architectural history, from its colonial origins to the contemporary era. The book includes an introduction to Australia’s most influential architects as well as essays by Harry Seidler (1923 – 2006), John Gollings, and David Bridgman.

Seidler’s essay argues for the incorporation of sunlight and shadow, phenomena so distinctly characteristic of the country’s climate, into architecture both from an aesthetic and practical standpoint. Gollings offers a historical sweep of Australian architecture before identifying the three major architectural strands of contemporary Australia. Bridgman explores the challenges of designing in the hot-humid tropics in particular, outlining the climatic considerations that must be accounted for when building in those regions.

Each chapter also includes an interview with a prominent architectural practice active in the respective city. The architects offer their views on the characteristics of Australian architecture and comment on their own practice within this context. With its comprehensive maps, aerial photographs, and images, this book is the ideal companion for those exploring Australia.

‘This Building Likes Me’ offers an engaging account of the recent work of one of Australia’s most significant architectural practices, John Wardle Architects (JWA). JWA is driven by those who experience their buildings and spaces – by those who live or work in them, or simply walk past. These are the people the buildings like! This monograph captures the practice’s commitment to people, cities and places; the collaborations with makers, builders and artists and the continual; and their continual inventive exploration of scale, site, landscape and narratives of memory. This Building Likes Me is a companion to JWA’s first book, Volume. Thirty-six recent buildings and projects are comprehensively presented in pairs, through photographs, drawings and images of JWA’s distinctive models. These are complemented by a multitude of short critical essays and intriguing accounts and images of life within the practice. The result is a compelling insight into contemporary architectural processes, preoccupations and projects.

Is it possible for a foyer to have the intimacy of a living room, or for a house to have the civic quality of a university building?

We reflect on two models – one of our Victoria University project, the other of Balnarring House. Suspended from the ceiling like orbiting satellites, these models are exaggerated maquettes of their built cousins. Paired at the same scale, they highlight common ideas within the projects and the ‘scalelessness’ of those ideas – both projects have courtyard spaces around their centre, thresholds that act as pivot points between different uses in each building.

This pairing identifies shared themes that are only recognisable when looking back and reflecting upon them – coincidences. This idea informs the structure of this book. Projects are presented in pairs – the relevance of which was only revealed to us upon reflection.

Thirty-six recent buildings and projects are comprehensively presented in pairs, through photographs, drawings and models. These are complemented by a multitude of short critical essays and intriguing accounts and images of life within the practice. Peter Stutchbury’s award-winning architecture continues to stimulate a new and increasing awareness of the potential for designing with the Australian landscape and its environment. His architecture has attracted international acclaim through his success in the 2008 International Living Steel Competition for extreme climate housing in Cherepovets, Russia, and his ‘Wall House’ in Japan for renowned fashion designer Issey Miyake. Stutchbury carries forward the mantle of great Australian ‘masters’ from whom he has learned, including Glenn Murcutt and Richard Leplastrier.

This elegant book will bring his work to a greater audience. It includes critical essays on his work by his friends Richard Leplastrier and Professor Brit Andresen, and by Ingerid Helsing Almaas, Editor of Arkitektur N, the Norwegian Architectural Review. Stutchbury, in his own words and pictures, explains the underpinnings of his philosophy and practice. A collection of ‘Projects in Brief’ covers seminal works of his early practice. Fourteen major recent ‘Projects in Detail’ are presented with explanatory texts, sketches, plans and new photography, including his ‘Invisible House’ in the Blue Mountains, which won 2014 House of the Year. The book finishes with an illustrated chronology of all his works and a section on his working studio.

This book examines and celebrates more than thirty years of innovative work by Kerry Hill Architects, a studio with offices in Singapore and Fremantle, Australia. This multi-award winning practice established its reputation with a series of exotic resorts in locations throughout southeast Asia, and also designed a brace of exceptional houses in the same region. These have been widely regarded as part of an architectural lineage initiated by Geoffrey Bawa, recognizable in a shared response to location through climatic strategies, the use of materials, and their form of construction. Kerry Hill brings a deep understanding of the East to his increasingly refined contemporary architecture, and his work is made distinctive by the rich experience of his generous and tranquil spaces. This is an unparallelled view into the world and thinking of an architectural practice that richly deserves international exposure.
