[.en] While the grandiosity of Fallingwater and elegance of Taliesin are recognized universally, Frank Lloyd Wright’s first foray into affordable housing is frequently overlooked. Although Wright began work on his American System-Built Homes (ASBH, 1911–17) with great energy, the project fell apart following wartime shortages and disputes between the architect and his developer. While continuing to advocate for the design of affordable small homes, Wright never spoke publicly of ASBH. As a result, the heritage of many Wright-designed homes was forgotten. When Nicholas and Angela Hayes became stewards of the unassuming Elizabeth Murphy House near Milwaukee, they began to unearth evidence that ultimately revealed a one-hundred-year-old fiasco fueled by competing ambitions and conflicting visions of America. The couple’s forensic pursuit of the truth untangled the ways Wright’s ASBH experiment led to the architect’s most productive, creative period. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Forgotten House includes a wealth of drawings and photographs, many of which have never been previously published. Historians, architecture buffs, and Wrightophiles alike will be fascinated by this untold history that fills a crucial gap in the architect’s oeuvre.

[.en] ‘Light Space Life’ is the first monograph from internationally recognized South African architecture studio SAOTA, known for crafting exceptional modern buildings that forge powerful connections to their extraordinary settings. Presenting memorable and distinctive residences selected from its wide-ranging global output, the book celebrates thirty-five years of innovative residential design from Lagos to Los Angeles, including houses from the dramatic South African coast where it all began.

SAOTA is led by Stefan Antoni, Philip Olmesdahl, Greg Truen, Philippe Fouché, Mark Bullivant, and Logen Gordon, and has designed luxury residential and commercial projects on six continents. With reference to South African Modernism, and a grounding in the International style, its projects take advantage of wildly beautiful settings, and are rooted in place by the relationship between the building and its site. The practice cites spirit of enquiry and close examination of function and form as hallmarks of its work, as well as the use of the most current technology, including virtual reality, in its design processes.

This monograph features twenty-three recent residential projects from around the world, with a particular focus on Africa, illustrated with color photography and including a foreword by SAOTA’s client Reni Folawiyo, founder of the West African fashion label, Alara.

[.en] Chilean architect Smiljan Radic’s career is one of the most unique in the contemporary architecture scene. Although he works mainly in Chile, his work has crossed borders after building the Serpentine Gallery pavilion (London, 2014). This 2G issue features a selection of the houses built by Radic in almost thirty years of his career, from the extension of the Charcoal Burner’s House (Cupliprán, 1997-1998) or his Small House (Vilches, 1995-1996) to his last Wooden House (Lake Colico, 2014-2015) and Prism House (Coinguillio, 2017-2018). In addition to the fourteen houses featured, a text by Enrique Walker explains the keys to understanding his domestic work from the Small House, and another by Moisés Puente talks about all the interventions that Radic has built in an estate in Vilches for him and his family. Two texts by the architect himself speak about the tradition of certain Chilean houses of his interest and about the role that repairing has in architecture, beyond the mere restoration or preservation.

A portion of the homes also highlight the group’s interior design work, which strikes a balance between sophisticated and comfortable and is conceived as a natural extension of the architecture. Evident in all CLB’s work is a bold contemporary spirit seeking original expression while referencing regional form and materials in creative ways. Whether a streamlined modern compound on the banks of the Snake River, a modest glass pavilion oriented for wildlife viewing or a home celebrating the region’s heritage in linked vernacular forms, each project is unique to client, setting, view, and the variables in nature. Over the course of three decades, CLB has established an architectural language for the Mountain West — one that is original, appropriate and uniquely Inspired by Place.

[.en] Adolf Meyer was Walter Gropius’s right-hand man, his planner and close confidant. As early as 1910, they jointly created the Fagus Factory, one of the most important modernist buildings. The experimental single-family home “Haus am Horn” was built for the first Bauhaus exhibition, in the summer of 1923 in Weimar. The house was planned by Georg Muche (design) and the architectural department at the Bauhaus. Adolf Meyer and Walter March were responsible for construction management.

The book about the project was compiled in the summer of 1924 and became the third volume of the Bauhausbücher. Following an essay by Walter Gropius that supplies information on the “Housing Industry,” Georg Muche presents the design of the model building. Adolf Meyer then describes its technical execution, giving details on the companies involved.

[.en] For many people home ownership is one of the most important goals in life and the biggest private investment. In Germany about two thirds of the residential building stock consists of single-family homes. With 80.000 to 90.000 new residences built every year it is by far the most important construction task for architects in this country. For this volume, the author has selected outstanding con-temporary concepts and designs that deserve to be noticed and appreciated much more. Neither luxury villa nor mass housing, all homes are within a middle-class budget. Apart from ground plans and elevations, key figures on square meters, building price and construction duration, facts on ecological aspects, materials used and, last but not least, the respective architects offer the potential builder exeedingly practical benefits.
