[.en] The Open Call in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking, northern part of Belgium) is more than just another architecture competition: any governmental agency or public institution can choose to work with an Open Call for any given construction project. Since its invention by the first Flemish Government Architect bOb Van Reeth in 2000, more than 700 assignments have been published in this procedure, resulting in almost 350 completed public architectural and infrastructural projects so far. This volume compiles 70 of these, from all over Flanders—from its west coast to the Dutch border in the east—to illustrate the astounding quality of these projects. They prove that public architecture can be daring, thought-provoking, cooperative, and well-done at the same time. The book takes an extensive look at how this procedure works, how it is received by architects, politicians, and clients—and ultimately, at the outstanding public architecture in Flanders as an example for other countries to study closely.

Including buildings by 51N4E, Bovenbouw Architectuur, Compagnie O, Dierendonckblancke, KAAN, Ney & Partners, noAarchitecten, NU architectuuratelier, OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, RCR Arquitectes, Robbrecht en Daem, Sergison Bates, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Xaveer de Geyter, Zaha Hadid, among others.

[.en] Victor Bourgeois (1897-1962) was the leading pioneer of the international modernist movement in Belgium, and a key player on the European scene. He was invited in 1927 to design a house for the famous Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart, an experimental housing estate built to showcase International Style modernism; and between 1928 and 1930 he played an important role in the International Congresses of Modern Architecture (CIAM), the most influential platform for modern architecture and urban design of the 20th century. Despite the refinement of his designs and acuteness of his theoretical insights, Bourgeois has been unjustly forgotten as an architect and urban designer. This book, the first study of Bourgeois' built and textual oeuvre, begins to remedy that, with a survey of the architect's work and intellectual development. Comprehensively researched, this monograph contributes an important chapter to the history of 20th-century architecture.

[.en] The Flanders Architecture Institute reissues the book ‘Juliaan Lampens 1950–1991’, which was originally compiled for the retrospective exhibition of the architect held at deSingel in 1991. The architecture of Juliaan Lampens (1926-2019), one of the greatest Belgian architects of the twentieth century, possesses uniquely sculptural qualities that continue to fascinate audiences at home and abroad. ‘Juliaan Lampens 1950–1991’ is the reissue of an exhibition catalogue from 1991, supplemented by an updated biography, a foreword and new translations in both French and English. It is a unique reference work because the hand of the master is emphatically present in every facet of the publication. The architect literally and figuratively shaped the book: texts, plans, photographs and sketches are interwoven with personal notes and invite the reader to enter the exceptional universe of Juliaan Lampens. This new revised and enlarged edition was facilitated by the non-profitorganisation Juliaan Lampens vzw (Jo Van Den Berghe, Luc De Vos, Koen Dekeyser, Franck Velghe, Dieter Lampens) and Daan Dufait. Besides reissuing the book, the Flanders Architecture Institute also draws on the oeuvre of Juliaan Lampens (1926–2019) for the second edition of ‘Unfolding the Archives’, which offers an unprecedented insight into this architect’s working method.

He began his career working with Rem Koolhaas at OMA, and started his own firm in the early 1990s. De Geyter believes architecture is about opening up possibilities: the potential of a site, the hidden opportunity of a particular situation, of a programmatic conflict. Among the featured projects are Hasselt’s Z33 Museum, Sint-Lucas School of Fine Arts in Ghent, a learning and innovation centre in Brussels, and a design for the International Olympic Committee Headquarters. [.en] ‘Leon Stynen. A Life of Architecture 1899-1990’ provides a look inside the impressive oeuvre of Stynen. The origins for this publication lie in the exceptionally rich archive of Stynen and his partner Paul De Meyer, which was donated to the Province of Antwerp in 1988. Today, 30 years later, it is considered one of the most important in the collection of the Flanders Architecture Institute. The oeuvre is introduced by a comprehensive biography, photographed in its current condition by Filip Dujardin and read from multiple perspectives in 9 essays. Few Belgian architects have left behind such a striking and diverse oeuvre as Leon Stynen (1899-1990). For more than 50 years, Stynen was active as an architect, urbanist and designer. He worked all over the country, but with a great love for his native city of Antwerp. In addition to the realisation of this important architectural oeuvre, he also played a major role in the development of architecture education and architectural culture in Belgium. Every publication on Belgian architectural history asserts Stynen as one of the iconic architects of his generation. With the exhibition Brutalism on a Human Scale. Post-war Architecture by Leon Stynen (1899-1990) in the iconic Silver Building, the Flanders Architecture Institute presents an insight into the post-war oeuvre of the Belgian architect Leon Stynen. His brutalist designs, in which the human scale plays a crucial role, take centre stage.

A new collection of Vincent Van Duysen's work, featuring his most recent projects. Since the release of his first monograph, Vincent Van Duysen has consolidated his reputation for buildings of exceptional spatial mastery and highly refined detailing, and built a growing international following. This beautiful companion volume presents thirty of the Belgian architect’s most recent works produced over the past decade, much of which has been exquisitely captured by renowned photographers Hélène Binet and François Halard. The buildings featured from this latest period include an array of elegant residences in Europe, New York, Paris and The Hamptons, as well as larger-scale commercial and public projects. Product and furniture designs, microcosms of the architect’s rigorous attention to detail, are also featured, including yacht interiors and objets décoratifs.

With a foreword by close friend and Academy Award-winning actor Julianne Moore, the broader context of Van Duysen’s contribution to contemporary architecture is provided by architect Nicola di Battista and architecture critic Marc Dubois. An illustrated chronology provides a complete overview of the architect’s recent projects. Van Duysen has established a reputation as one of the world’s most refined and artful architects. This major new publication will further cement his uncompromising commitment to creating timeless places and spaces.

[.en] In this book, Belgian architecture office a2o presents an investigative and connecting approach to architecture through an evocative reading of their latest project, crematorium Statie Stuifduin in Lommel, Belgium. This thoughtful yet radical design blends architecture and landscape in a succession of spaces that reveals a deep understanding of both the fundamental aspects of and changing attitudes towards death, burial and the journey of life. Rather than through explicit religious symbols, the sacral is represented by the universal power of nature and by Romantic notions of finding meaning in rediscovered nature. In doing so, Statie Stuifduin goes beyond the specifics of the building to explore new visions of what contemporary funeral architecture can be.

For many of Antwerp’s inhabitants, the Linkeroever is unknown territory. From the banks of the Scheldt, the opposite side of the river appears as a series of high-rises hovering over a green strip. City architect Christian Rapp launched an international ideas competition in 2016, with the ambition to address the Linkeroever as an object of design research and to encourage debate on the importance of this “separate” part of the city for the whole of Antwerp. The competition sought images that offer a vision of the future of the city, now published in a book which takes this initiative as a starting point for examining larger questions about the state of urban development and design today.

The architectural production in Flanders is enjoying increased international attention. Architects from Flanders and Brussels are present at prestigious global architectural events and are invited to present their work. This international recognition reflects the significant work of a number of Flemish practices who have contributed to the emergence of a vital culture of design and research.

Since the 1990s this dynamic process, which is also the result of an enlightened architectural policy of the Flemish government has been recorded in the series of Architectural Yearbooks, which have been published bi-annually by the Flemish Architectural Institute VAi. On the occasion of the Interiors Biennale Kortrijk the VAi and its partners are proud to present the tenth edition of this series which has been renamed as Architectural Review Flanders to an international audience. In the present publication an editorial board of architects, critics and scholars from Flanders and Europe reflect upon the development of new concepts for housing and dwelling in one of Europe’s most densely populated regions, on urban renewal projects and infrastructures and on the profound cultural ambition that is reflected in a significant number of public and private buildings across Flanders. Published under the title ‘Radical Commonplaces’ the Architectural Review Flanders is both a critical reflection upon the state of architecture in this European region and a celebration of the remarkable achievement of architects, urbanists and interior architects in shaping the everyday environment of our cities and landscapes.

The Belgian modernist Juliaan Lampens (1926) experimented with the use of raw concrete and created sculpture-like exteriors leading onto open vistas. His architecture goes beyond designs for conventional living and instead suggests a utopian avant-garde of living without barriers. The aim of this publication is to give this small, but highly unusual oeuvre the recognition and the place that it deserves within modernism. The different contributions should make visible the diverse aspects to be found in the work of the architect. Edited by Angelique Campens. Design by Thomas Desmet. Published by ASA Publishers. With contributions by Angelique Campens, Sara Noel Costa De Araujo, Joseph Grima, Jan Kempenaers, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Francis Strauven.
