[.en] The complete Rossi design works, from his Alesssi kettle to a coffee pot based on a floating theater. Over the course of four decades, the Italian architect and designer Aldo Rossi (1931–97) won international recognition in four distinct areas: architecture, drawing, urban design theory and product design. A part of Silvana’s series on 20th-century Italian design masters, this catalog explores Rossi’s under-published design oeuvre, highlighting over 70 of his projects in which he experimented with shapes and colors through a myriad of material combinations: metals and wood, marble and stone, ceramics and porcelain, artisanal and industrial fabrics, and plastic. Special attention is paid to the evolutions in his output, from his furniture collaborations with architect Leonardo Ferrari in 1960 to his industrial production for Artemide, DesignTex, Bruno Longoni Atelier of furniture, Molteni & C, Richard-Ginori, UniFor, Rosenthal and Up & Up.

[.en] ‘The Urban Fact’ examines Aldo Rossi’s formulation of a theory of the city, developed over the period of roughly ten years, from ‘Architecture of the City’ published in 1966, to ‘Analogous City’ exhibited in 1976. Rossi’s theory is not taken as an abstract argument, but is seen through his work from that period. A careful selection of twenty-three projects is presented here at face value. These projects, bound by the reality of their setting, but also charged with cultural and civic ambition, illustrate the intricacy of an architectural project as a complex “whole”. They also demonstrate how architecture could contribute to the changing urban context of the field, hinting at an oeuvre painfully aware of its limitations and stubborn in its intentions.

[.en] An essential new look at the Italian architect, writer, and designer whose work paved the way for the postmodern movement.

This crucial reassessment of Aldo Rossi’s (1931–1997) architecture simultaneously examines his writings, drawings, and product design, including the coffeepots and clocks he designed for the Italian firm Alessi. The first Italian to receive the Pritzker Prize, Rossi rejected modernism, seeking instead a form of architecture that could transcend the aesthetic legacy of Fascism in postwar Italy. Rossi was a visionary who did not allow contemporary trends to dominate his thinking. His baroque sensibility and poetic approach, found both in his buildings and in important texts like ‘The Architecture of the City’, inspired the critic Ada Louise Huxtable to describe him as “a poet who happens to be an architect.”

Diane Ghirardo explores different categories of structures—monuments, public buildings, cultural institutions, theaters, and cemeteries—drawing significantly on previously unpublished archival materials and always keeping Rossi’s own texts in the forefront. By delving into the relationships among Rossi’s multifaceted life, his rich body of work, and his own reflections, this book provides a critical new understanding of Rossi’s buildings and the place of architecture in postwar Italy.

Diane Y. F. Ghirardo is professor of the history and theory of architecture at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

[.en] Aldo Rossi is one of the acknowledged masters of architecture of the second half of the 20th century; the interest in his work has remained constant since the 1960s, as is demonstrated by the events organized recently for the 20th anniversary of his death. The three essays gathered together in this small volume present a different view of the Italian architect and make a highly valuable contribution to the copious amounts of literature already available on his work.
