[.en] Ricardo Bofill is one of the 20th century’s most unique architects and radical visionaries. His visions for urban and communal life challenged preconceived notions of shared space and proposed alternative styles of living. This monograph explores his revolutionary approach by profiling his greatest projects like La Fábrica, Walden 7, La Muralla Roja or Abraxas. Spectacular new photography by Salva López, texts by experts like Nacho Alegre and Douglas Murphy as well as by Bofill himself are complemented with sketches and floor plans. Bofill’s fantastic creations satisfy a longing for originality, personality and progressive ideals.

Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill has been an industry leader since the early 1960s, his architectural and urban design practice Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura having completed an impressive 1,000 projects in more than 50 countries; each of them groundbreaking and inspired.

Having designed his first summer home in Ibiza at the tender age of 23, the now 79 year old—inspired by vernacular architecture through early travels in Spain, before studying at the Barcelona School of Architecture—is widely and justly considered one of the 20th century’s most unique architects and radical visionaries, a fact that is celebrated in a new landmark gestalten monograph.

Edited by the publishers and Bofill, the 300-page hardback book explores his revolutionary approach by profiling his greatest works—including La Fábrica which, located on the outskirts of the architect’s hometown Barcelona, serves as headquarters to his practice; as well as nearby Walden 7, a visionary work dreamt up in Algerian desert and known affectionately by locals as the ‘kasbah’.

Outside of Barcelona, La Muralla Roja—or ‘the red wall’—is a housing project located within the La Manzanera development in Spain’s Calpe that foresaw Instagram aesthetics. Striking colours on the exterior and inner façades either contrast with nature or complement its purity. Over in neighbouring France, his landmark project Les Espaces d’Abraxas has a close eye cast upon its almost inconceivable enormity.

With photography by Salva López; texts by experts like Nacho Alegre and Douglas Murphy, as well as by Bofill himself; and original sketches and floor plans, the monograph showcases the work of an authentic revolutionary—a man who brought together a a multidisciplinary, multitalented group in order to confront the complexity of architectural practice. A man whose visions will endure in ambitious, frequently surreal, always inspired structures.

[.en] Urban renewal means reconstruction practices conducted upon structures and places that can no longer adapt themselves to new developments of the urban environment. Urban renewal plays a critical role in improving the living environment for modern urban dwellers, and renovation and regeneration of public open spaces has become a key component of urban renewal. The book collects many fabulous world landscape projects and focuses on urban renewal design from three aspects: conservation of historical sites, eco-sustainability of urban environment, and artistic regeneration. In this way we hope the book can help explore new strategies for urban development driven by renovation and landscape architecture.

[.en] The first in-depth monograph on one of the most important contemporary architecture practices working today. With offices in Oslo, Innsbruck, San Francisco, and New York, and projects all over the world, Snøhetta's architecture, landscape, interior, and branding design projects are created across political boundaries, at all scales, and are fundamentally concerned with the unique interactions between people and places. Through stunning imagery and evocative narrative text, this book showcases 24 exceptional projects - including the 9/11 Memorial & Museum Pavilion and the Oslo Opera House - which, together, illustrate Snøhetta's boundary-pushing and highly collaborative approach to design. The book is organized into three chapters: Integration of Disciplines, Political Space, and Generosity and Collective Ownership. The books is the perfect expression of the firm's values and how it has evolved over its 30-year history. Conversations with Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Gaute Brochmann lend depth and focus. An illustrated chronology and detailed architectural drawings provide deeper insight.

[.en] Is architecture inherently complete? Or is it a state of incompletion and seeming inadequacy that incites us to imagine architecture as an armature for an ever-changing daily life?

Buildings and Almost Buildings, made possible in part through a grant from the Graham Foundation, explores the work of nARCHITECTS as a single project – an anti-monograph with a subtle manifesto about the open-ended, incomplete, and ambiguous in architecture. Structured around a variety of modes of representation specially prepared for the book, Buildings and Almost Buildings reveals the ways in which the celebrated New York office led by Eric Bunge and Mimi Hoang addresses contemporary issues of a world in flux. Across a range of buildings, public spaces, and ephemeral installations, nARCHITECTS argues for the formal and social potential of an architecture that remains somehow incomplete and ambiguously perceived—or in the authors’ words, Almost Buildings.

nARCHITECTS is a Brooklyn based architecture office led by Principals Eric Bunge and Mimi Hoang. In recent projects such as Carmel Place (New York City’s first micro unit building), the design center A/D/O, and the renovation of Chicago Navy Pier, nARCHITECTS is tackling the most pressing issues that our cities face – how we live, work and activate public spaces in response to our nation’s changing demographics, housing shortage, evolving workplace technologies and need for equality in the public realm.

The firm’s awards and honors include a 2017 national AIA Institute Honor Award in Architecture, the 2017 NYS AIA Firm of the Year, a 2016 Academy of Arts and Letters Award in architecture, the AIANY Andrew J Thomas Award for Pioneers in Housing, the 2006 Architectural League’s Emerging Voices and the Canadian Professional Rome Prize in 2005. The firm has been ranked within the top 10 in the US in the design category for the past five years by Architect Magazine.

[.en] Mention of the name Richard Neutra conjures the light-flooded bungalows that characterize the architectural style of the West Coast around Los Angeles. Because he is so closely associated with Los Angeles, it is sometimes overlooked that Neutra’s career actually began in the Berlin-Zehlendorf neighborhood in the early 1920s. And yet these houses in Zehlendorf represent a fascinating phase in Neutra’s work. With their complex color schemes and extravagant interior design, they reveal themselves to be more than just experimental and radically innovative designs. Indeed, these lesser-known buildings already hint at elements that Neutra would take up again in his future projects.‘Richard Neutra in Berlin’ allows for a long-overdue, rightful reassessment of Neutra’s early works. Alongside historical sources, it collects countless new and unpublished documents about the houses and their first residents.

Austrian-born architect Richard Neutra (1892–1970) finished his architectural studies in the midst of the First World War, and worked in Switzerland and Germany for a few years before moving to the United States in 1923. Settling in California after working briefly for Frank Lloyd Wright, Neutra became identified with a West Coast variant on mid-century modern architecture: rigorously geometric buildings designed in the International Style of Neutra’s European training, with an open, airy, flexible atmosphere suitable to Neutra’s new California home.

[.en] Vertical greening and roof gardening is an important element of sustainable urban planning, and also a significant aspect in the construction of an 'eco-friendly China'. Especially now, when the greening area available to citizens is becoming less and less, vertical greening can give some compensations. It is also an important means to alleviate the urban heat island effect and deal with heavy storms. It also plays a key role in achieving the goal of sustainable development. This book aims to review developments of eco-cities in China in recent years. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 introduces basic knowledge and technical know-how about vertical greening, including a general introduction and suggestions about site analysis, planning and design, green wall and roof construction techniques and maintenance. Part 2 is a collection of 32 projects, showing the latest achievements in vertical greening and roof gardens in China. All these projects are selected carefully and presented with photos, drawings and narratives to demonstrate the design process, conception, and installation/realisation in a professional way. Besides, important elements and factors that will have an impact on vertical landscaping are discussed in detail. It will be helpful to vertical greening practitioners around the world to learn from experiences and lessons in China.

[.en] David Tajchman's first book about a self-initiated architectural research for a White City-specific High-Rise: the Gran Mediterraneo. Gathering working documents, sketches and rare pictures in an object specifically designed by graphic designer and art director Sara Jassim. In 2016, architect David Tajchman made public a self-initiated high-rise proposal on which he worked in secret during a few months. He decided to propose a new typology of skyscraper, more city-specific for Tel Aviv. Based on his previous observations that a new skyline is appearing in the White City, which according to his experience of the city and his knowledge of the local architectural history, does not take enough into account the 1930s and later Brutalist legacies. His yet unbuilt (but surely to get built) skyscraper is a spontaneous proposal from a foreign architect to the local decision makers, to open their eyes and their mind to other visions, for a more Tel Aviv-specific ver-tical architecture. The Gran Mediterraneo has been widely published as an architectural innovation and has won several awards gaining international recognition, with the recent Architizer A+ Awards 2017 received in New York. During the design process, David sketched, wrote, read and photographed about the various topics involved into his high-rise proposal. This book is an opportunity to share his references, background, research docu-ments, notes, drawings and working (3d) models. The book was first an exhibition-catalogue, presented last September 2016 in Paris in the framework of a solo show entitled ‘Gran Mediterraneo - Project Process Progress’. It contains archive documents on different topics and texts from invited contributors.

The Gran Mediterraneo is an innovative concept of High-Rise that integrates a public automated car-park, operates as the first induction charging station for public and shared electric driverless vehicles in the city (future 'sherut'), and mixes programs of vertical living: residential apartments and hotel, bars and restaurants, farming and public gardens, swimming pools and dead sea spas, co-working spaces for offices and start-ups, educational and events spaces. Innovative also with its topological geometry giving a spiral effect to the high-rise, the Gran Mediterraneo breaks with the global and usual stacking of horizontal slabs wrapped with mirrored glass, aiming to renew Tel Aviv skyline with a 'Unesco proclaimed white city' specific vertical architecture. To be built with white concrete, using the latest construction and digital technologies, the curvy high-rise is filled with mediterranean and dead sea natures.

[.en] Contrary to popular belief, the architecture and spatial politics of the State of Israel were not born haphazardly out of emergency or speculation. The Israeli built environment is the deliberate response to a unique objective―how to design and build a model state nearly instantaneously. To do this, space had to be remade: a new terrain was molded, and dozens of new towns and hundreds of rural settlements were constructed. Fashionable postwar architectural trends like Brutalism and Structuralism were appropriated as signifiers of national vigor.

‘The Object of Zionism’ is a critical study of Zionist spatial planning and the architectural fabrication of the State of Israel from the early 20th century to the 1960s and '70s. Zvi Efrat scrutinizes Israel as a singular modernist project, unprecedented in its political and ethical circumstances and its hyper-production of spatial and structural experiments. Efrat explores the construction of the State of Israel in a book that promises to become a standard reference on Israeli architectural history.

Architect and architectural historian Zvi Efrat is a partner at Efrat-Kowalsky Architects in Tel-Aviv and was head of the Department of Architecture at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, between 2002 and 2010. He studied at Pratt Institute, New York University and Princeton University and has curated numerous exhibitions, among them ‘Borderline Disorder’ and ‘The Object of Zionism’. Efrat is a Graham Foundation awardee.

This book presents research work developed for the past eight years in the Advanced Research graduate studio 'Architecture of Nature/ Nature of Architecture', created and directed by Diana Agrest at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of the Cooper Union. Architecture of Nature departs from the traditional approach to nature as a referent for architecture and reframes it as its object of study. The complex processes of generation and transformations of extreme natural phenomena such as glaciers, volcanoes, permafrost, and clouds are explored through unique drawings and models, confronting a scale of space and time that expands and transcends the established boundaries of the architectural discipline.

It places the individuals who have achieved international fame, such as Edvard Munch and Alvar Aalto in a wider context, and through a series of case studies, provides a rich analysis of the art, architecture and design history of the Nordic region, and of modernism as a concept and mode of practice.

Modernism in Scandinavia addresses the decades between 1890 and 1970 and presents an intertwined history of modernism across the region. Charlotte Ashby gives a rationale for her focus on those countries which share an interrelated history and colonial past, but also stresses influences from outside the region, such as the English Arts and Crafts movement and the impact of emergent American modernism. Her richly illustrated account guides the reader through key historical periods and cultural movements, with case studies illuminating key art works, buildings, designed products and exhibitions.
