[.en] In 2018, Germany will have been unified for 28 years, which is exactly as long as the inner German border existed (1961-1989). In the German Pavilion at the 2018 Architecture Biennale in Venice, GRAFT Architects Lars Kruckeberg, Wolfram Putz and Thomas Willemeit, together with German politician Marianne Birthler investigate the effects of the separation and the process of healing as dynamic, spatial phenomena. The accompanying publication focuses on outstanding urban design and architectural examples of the former inner German border that engage with the issues of separation and fusion. One focus is on the former Berlin Wall. Numerous essays by architects, urban designers, and political scientists examine the urban manifestations of this development, which can also be seen elsewhere.

[.en] Ecological refurbishment to Passivhaus standard requires know-how and experience. For this reason, the book has been produced as a design tool which systematically covers existing solutions. Examples relating to building physics, construction and ecology issues are presented in the same successful manner as in the ‘Passivhaus Building Component Catalog’ also published by IBO/IBN (Institute for Building Biology and Ecology) using standard cross-sections and connection details in four-color scale drawings, as well as numerous tables. They have been organized by type and period of building and can easily be used to derive individual solutions. The book is a must-have reference manual for designers and building owners who want to refurbish properties to a sustainable standard.

[.en] The latest volume in the book series Alvar Aalto Architect, presents two buildings from the 1950s, Muuratsalo Experimental House and Studio Aalto, which are linked to both the architect’s work and leisure. Studio Aalto (1954-55, 1962-63) in Munkkiniemi, Helsinki, served as the architect’s office, and was the main stage for his productive international career. Aalto also enjoyed spending time in the Muuratsalo Experimental House (1952-54) built on the island of Päijänne as a counterbalance to his work.

Muuratsalo Experimental House – Alvar Aalto’s arena for artistic play and experiment
Alvar Aalto and his architect wife Elissa jointly designed a small-scale, intimate summer residence – an experimental house – on the beautiful island of Muuratsalo in Central Finland. The place and its natural beauty gave Aalto a chance to make architectural experiments, as well as painting in oils, far away from the bustle of everyday life. The architect Juhani Pallasmaa’s article “The Experimental House, sauna and boat: The Art of play” presents the design and execution of the building and grounds.

Elissa and Alvar Aalto dreamed of reshaping the rugged, rocky surroundings of the summer residence into a lush, flourishing garden. In her text “Garden aspirations in the Experimental House” Mia Hipeli, MA, writes about the landscape plan drawn up by garden architect Paul Olsson, its implementation, and the garden’s current state overrun by nature.

Studio Aalto – a key location for the architect’s creative work
Studio Aalto was completed in Munkkiniemi in Helsinki in 1954, close to Aalto’s own home (1935–36), which had previously housed both the family’s residential areas and the architect’s office. In his article “Studio Aalto: Drawing on the White Table”, Professor Emeritus Marc Treib, M. Arch., sheds light on the history of the architect’s office, as well as the design, construction and working methods of Aalto’s office.

The architect Harry Charrington, PhD, worked in Aalto’s architect’s office as a newly graduated architect under Elissa Aalto’s leadership after the maestro’s death. In “Studio Aalto: an evolving practice Charrington” he paints a picture of the atmosphere and work of the office before its closure in 1994. Meanwhile, in “Alvar Aalto’s Studio, restoration 2002–2004” the architect Eric Adlercreutz recounts the meticulous, conservative total renovation of the building, illustrated by the updated drawings.

The ‘Selected drawings’ section contains sketches drawn during the designing years, while ‘Contemporary photographs’ presents the Muuratsalo Experimental House and Studio Aalto through the eyes of today’s photographers.

[.en] In the last few decades, the "diagram" has evolved into a constitutive, generative medium for the architectural design process and is now an everyday term used in the context of design. The diagram represents an imaginative process that enables architects to transform typologies, figures, and models using analogue and digital design procedures. This process is creative and erratic – it is highly intuitive and variable and follows its own logic. As such, the diagram, with its lines, points, and strokes, operates at the intersection of geometry, art, and theory. The second edition of this book from the series Construction and Design Manuals presents a selection of projects by prominent architects and designers in the form of diagrams, drawn from the fields of architecture, interior design, and installation. This volume includes work by UNStudio, NL Architects, JDS Architects, J. Mayer H. Architects, LAVA, and Périphériques architectes and also features an essay by the philosopher Lidia Gasperoni.

Architects use diagrams every day – as sketches they are convenient tools for quickly demonstrating a point, as worked through representations they present complex ideas simply and attractively for clients, and as graphics they cross language barriers. Their theoretical background is, however, not quite so well known. Alongside offering inspiring examples of these multifaceted visualisations, this volume explores some of the associated history and theory. How is the diagram a place where architecture and philosophy meet? In what ways can we critically examine their analogue and digital forms? Is the history of the diagram over? Citing the ideas of, among others, Peter Eisenman and Gilles Deleuze the philosopher Lidia Gasperoni investigates diagrammatic practices in architectural design in her absorbing introductory essay.

[.en] Prefabricated housing has long since ceased to mean the disfigurement of the urban landscape with monotonous grey boxes. Particularly in Central Europe and Russia, modern assembly methods and 100 years of experience in planning prefabricated buildings and constructing with large panels are experiencing a renaissance. Whereas predominantly in Moscow - the largest European metropolis with seventeen million - prefabricated housing is an essential instrument for the provision of residential assistance, prefabrication methods in Germany and Switzerland, for example, are used to build exclusive properties. This construction manual examines the potential of prefabricated housing on structural, historical and architectural grounds. In addition to an insight into the methods of production and assembly, roughly twenty selected examples are presented in large-format photographs, plans rich in detail and meaningful diagrams, providing a contribution to the discussion on affordable housing.

[.en] “I want you to live with the waterfall, not just to look at it.” This sentence surely has a special place among famous quotations from architects. Not because it comes from Frank Lloyd Wright, though that is certainly a reason as well. First and foremost, it is extraordinary because it was expressed in built form in the Fallingwater house from 1939. The longing to live in and with nature is nothing new. Publisher Sandra Hofmeister and author Jakob Schoof have cleverly compiled many other historical, architecturally unique, social and psychological models which document how – and just how long – topography and architecture have been interrelated. In this era, when for the first time more people live in cities than in the country, this interrelationship fascinates us more than ever; that is the hypothesis behind the book.

Twenty buildings serve as proof in the meticulously, appealingly designed, cloth-bound German-English publication. Over the past years, these buildings have been created all over the world: there are private country homes as well as mountain shelters; some structures are intended for permanent use, others as holiday accommodations. Six pages are devoted to each of the projects; precise texts describe the buildings, which are depicted with consistent plans drawn on a scale ranging from 1:100 to 1:400, accompanied by many colour pictures. There is no information regarding the exact year that each building was erected, nor are there any site plans. However, these are not needed: the unusual locations are recognizable in the photos, and the quality is timeless. The feelings of longing that this book arouses in astounded readers will be supplemented by a spark of envy towards those who have realized their dreams of living in nature with the help of architecture that at times melds with the topography, and at times sets a counterpoint to the landscape. But there is hope: some of the houses are open to guests...

The curriculum focuses on the development of conceptual and practical skills for creating future-oriented architecture - on experimental investigation of atmospheric, phenomenal, and visual effects, which provides intelligent solutions for contemporary forms of dwelling and being but which should also satisfy "feasibility criteria". "Re: Futures" uses texts, digital visualizations and descriptive architectural sketches to document the work created over recent years, and thereby reveals a spectrum of contemporary design methods and future-oriented architectural themes.

[.en] Which design principles and construction methods have established themselves in architecture in the last 25 years? What social trends have influenced architecture? Which technical innovations had an impact and what has become of their approaches? Which architects stepped into the limelight at this time and how have they developed? Christian Schittich has explored these and many other questions. He tells the individual history of outstanding buildings in chronological order, with an eye to the overall context of architectural development of recent years. Looking at selected photographs and drawings documenting the construction process and/or the current state of the building: wherein lies the significance of a building’s design, how has it contributed to society, what technical innovations did it involve and what effect did they have? Or did the construction method prove itself at all? An exciting discourse about three decades of architectural history.

[.en] How has Berlin’s urban landscape changed in its remarkable transformation from divided city to creative capital? Despite the monumental heritage and grand development projects, Berlin still conjures up images of urban fragmentation and vacant inner-city land. The book reveals the changing nature and complex politics of this open space. A rephotographing of sites between 2001 and 2016 shows how no man’s land has made way for new apartments and underground hangouts have changed into commercial hubs, but it also transports us to remaining pockets of urban wilderness and unexpected freedom right next to the city’s most iconic squares. The accompanying essays by noted urban thinkers explore this little-known but vital reserve—forcing us to reflect on our unrelenting efforts to chart the future of the city at large.

[.en] ‘Echos’ is a platform for simultaneous conversations with shared ethos at UC SAID. Various constellations begin to surface and map our diverse milieu of academic and social interactions that revolve around the following five main themes: anxiety, praxis, trope, chreod, and utopia. Introduced by a series of analytical diagrams which are paired up with essays by lead figures in the discipline, the themes expand on the issues of theoretical anxiety, architectural discourse, practice, typology, self-made analogies, ad hoc morphologies inherent to research, flux and reflux - that return each disruption to a steady trajectory - similar to the natural cycle of compression and release generated by our co-op program, and the fictitious, the ideal. Anxiety collects and synthesizes among multiple contradicting theories entertaining with equanimity various solutions to design problems. Praxis looks at outcomes - may those be physical, prototypical, digital or analog, multi-dimensional and multi-media, spoken, written or unwritten - as well as working methodologies that shape design thinking. Trope begins to map out trends, emergent ideologies, and previously non-denominational design expressions. Chreod documents and interprets field conditions, rule based processes, issues of transgressions, non-smooth and nomadic entities which cut across arbolic like divisions. Utopia, while suspending various otherwise necessary constraints, allows for a euphoric and optimistic view of the world, with the goal of envisioning daring possibilities otherwise unimaginable. Utopia, therefore, foreshadows all other themes.

[.en] Gion Caminada is well-known far beyond Switzerland's borders: as an architect, whose work is developed out of - and gives new life to - its context. The award-winning renewal of his native community of Vrin, the renaissance of the village of Valendas with its inn and village hall, the buildings in and around Disentis Abbey that contributed to the abbey's revival, and many more. He passes on his experience in his role as a professor of architecture and design at the ETH. His contribution to architecture is being presented at the 2018 Venice Biennale. In this illustrated interview Gion Caminada tells of his path to building, of old villages, of working together with engaged citizens, and of the ideas that drive him forward in life.

Caminada is known far beyond the boundaries of Switzerland – as an architect who has initiated the design and construction of the award-winning renewal of his home community Vrin in Grisons, and as Professor of Architecture and Design at ETH Zurich. At Valendas, which once was a thriving village but recently suffered from rural exodus, he revitalized – commissioned by a community trust – a country inn, the community hall, and the village square, and has thereby helped to avert the impending death of the village. In this illustrated interview he tells the story of new life in old villages, and how his concepts function in cooperation with committed citizens. Easy to read, the book introduces the subject of village renewal, and can be used as a blueprint for other projects.

[.en] Since the beginning of the century, the field of architecture has fervently turned its attention to documenting the contemporary urban condition. Every city been has been examined as a repository of architectural concepts, scrutinized as an urban manifesto, and recorded as a series of found objects. The Ordinary articulates a potential genealogy for this practice and for the genre of books derived from it. Organized around conversations with the authors of three seminal texts that document the city-Denise Scott Brown's Learning from Las Vegas (1972), Rem Koolhaas's Delirious New York (1978), and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto's Made in Tokyo (2001)-this volume traces the history of these "books on cities" by examining the material they recorded, the findings they established, the arguments they advanced, and the projects they promoted. These conversations also question the assumptions underlying this practice and whether in its ubiquity it still remains a space of opportunity.

This quote could stand equally for her buildings. Prochazka developed and disseminates her conceptional approach within the framework of her professorships and her international lecturing activities. The book closes the gap in the documentation of significant female Viennese architects.

[.en] An ideal design is site-specific, which is the only way architecture can create or connect with a specific sense of identity. This requires addressing the structural and local circumstances. This method handbook offers a playful way in which to systematically ascertain a complex framework and use it for your own design. The "9 x 9 method" takes all relevant factors and their alternate interaction into consideration: location, structure, shell, program, and materiality, all which, in a matrix with various intersections, produce exactly 9 "fields of action" for the design. The individual "fields" are not only illustrated visually with meaningful and eidetic pictures, but are also discussed in texts by leading specialists. For this book, the "9 x 9 method" was completely re-worked and redesigned.

[.en] ‘Now We See Now’ chronicles the projects and findings of a firm that is charting bold new directions in generative design and other intersections of science and architecture. In the context of massive and accelerating change--in technology, science, climate, and society--the nature of architectural design is also evolving and coming to life in new ways. New York-based office The Living has developed a unique design approach that explores projects through the application of new technologies, materials, and the growing field of generative design (design that uses software to emulate nature's evolutionary processes). These methods are futuristic, even utopian, but also raw and immediate in their application of hands-on prototyping and testing through making. The Living addresses urgent issues through reframing design with today's tools.

David Benjamin, founding principal of The Living, explains his methodologies through numerous projects and abundant research that are making real inroads to what is increasingly known as generative design. Benjamin executes numerous projects that demonstrate these surprising techniques, including the Princeton Embodied Computation Lab, a new building for research on next-generation design and construction technologies; Hy-Fi, a branching tower for MoMA PS1 made of a new type of biodegradable brick; and using principles of adaptive networks to prototype new structural dividers for Airbus that are nearly 50% lighter than traditional ones. ‘Now We See Now’ documents this emerging body of work and points to new directions for an evolving discipline, surveying projects at a variety of scales for a variety for clients. For an era where rapid change is the norm, The Living demonstrates how future design practices can embrace uncertainty and generate surprising solutions to tomorrow's challenges.

[.en] Cities Connection Project seeks to establish connections at the level of Architectural themes between the city ofBarcelona and other European cities or regions with a significant architectural tradition.A series of architecture exhibitions are the focus of this project that also offers other events such as conferences, academic discussion and professional meetings. Every exchange is articulated around a fresh theme, which is related to the specific characteristics of the invited city or region. The Import Zurich title focuses mainly on Zurich's cooperative housing projects. For about fifteen years now a renaissance of urban living is bringing about a renewal of activity among the housing cooperatives. They have adopted ecological standards, they have developed socially compatible forms of denser building, and theirlarge-scale projects have a significant impact on the qualitative development of the city's neighbourhoods. This is coupled with a new generation of architects who, thanks in part to architecture competitions, have had the opportunity to develop, test out and affirm their own field of research within a very strict and deterministic legal framework.

[.en] The focus of the sixth instalment in the 'Villages and Towns series is the highly diverse, mountainous region of Europe known generally as the Alps. Stretching across multiple nations, including the entirety of Switzerland, the area has a long history of settlement and has witnessed various approaches to living and building. The Alpine region is thus a mosaic, dotted with different settlements at various formative stages, and the contrast and blend between French and German cultures creates a place where two worlds coexist in a discontinuous manner. Through contemporary and historical photographs, this issue explores traditional wood and stone architecture typologies of the Alps.

[.en] For plenty years, many popular mountain resorts have seen largely uncontrolled development consisting of the multiplication of archetypal chalet-style houses. This is usually accompanied by roadbuilding for private cars. In order to protect these tourist destinations and their natural environs from further uncontrolled development, the author investigates different settlement structures such as Andermatt, Avoriaz, Verbier, Zermatt, and Whistler-Blackcomb. On the basis of detailed graphical analyses, she develops groundbreaking strategies for urban densification and suitable mobility management, which can also be transferred to other tourist áreas.

[.en] In the eighteenth century the Alps became the subject of a new view of nature, which crystallized in the sublime. Oscillating between fear and fascination, this sensual experience triggered a thrilling borderline experience: travelers ventured to the mountain world full of longing and projected a variety of different dreams onto the "wild nature" that had yet to be explored. To what extent has the sublime influenced architecture in the Alps, from the early days of tourism to the present? Prompted by this question, the author analyzes Alpine architecture in its historical context and offers a critical assessment of contemporary tourism. This is a book that inspires us to reflect on the future of building in the Alps and on our relationship with nature.
