[.en] This edition highlights two houses by Oscar Niemeyer, the Brazilian modernist architect. Known as Casa das Canoas and Casa Cavanelas, both residences are located in Rio de Janeiro and both were built in the early 1950s. Yet, according to the essay by Yoshio Futagawa, the contrast between them is quite intriguing. The former, Niemeyer’s own residence, demonstrates the spatial truth in privacy that the architect explored; the latter startles the viewer with spectacular features orchestrated through Niemeyer’s collaboration with landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx. Futagawa’s exceptional photography completes the tribute to this pair of masterful designs.

[.en] Albert Kahn is probably the most important industrial architect of the 20th century. With his factory for the Ford T models, designed for mass production, he found himself at the beginning of modern industrial architecture. His industrial buildings inspired the architects of European Modernism. They were the examples by which the structural rationality of Kahn's industrial developments became the guiding principle for the New Building movement up until today. The unrivalled monograph with its numerous photographs, plan layouts, site plans, and virtual 3D models comprehensively documents the buildings of Albert Kahn, which he was able to construct in a very short time due to his system-based working method - in the USA but also in the Soviet Union, Brazil, Sweden, France, China, Japan, and Australia.

[.en] ‘The alternating cultural centres, bustling commercial quarters, and tranquil residential complexes all make cycling along Oslo’s new harbour promenade the ultimate urban experience.’ - Falk Jaeger

Once known only for its natural surroundings, Oslo is now firmly on the map for its architecture. Contemporary showpieces such as Renzo Piano’s Astrup Fearnley Museum, Snøhetta’s iconic opera house, and the Barcode project line its new waterfront. This geographically organised guide leads the reader on a tour of these masterworks as well as out to the regions around Scandinavia’s smallest capital. It takes in everywhere from a brutalist church with an inverted dome and a ski jump with a 69 metre cantilever, to modernist restaurants and recently transformed areas such as Fornebu, the former site of the city’s airport. In two introductory essays and more than 150 projects, the book outlines not only how Oslo has turned to the water, but also what gives it such a special place in the hearts of architects, designers, and its citizens.

[.en] Chandigarh is a unique city, besides being one of the newest city in the twentieth century, characterized by the seal of Le Corbusier, who planned the city and was also the architect of its most emblematic buildings including the Capitol Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Chandigarh, you will also find the work of a large team of architects led by the partner of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, who conducted the master plan and built much needed public housing and facilities much needed in the city, along with the British team of Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew. As a result, Chandigarh is one of the benmarch cities of the Modern Movement. Also worth of noting are Indian architects (such as MN Sharma, A. Prakash, BP Mathur and JK Choudhury) who worked alongside Le Corbusier and Jeanneret to turn Chandigarh into a reality. Although unknown to most, they have played an important role in modern and contemporary Indian architecture. With this useful guide, you will discover the city and its architecture along three types of routes, depending on how travellers plan their trip, as well as suggestions for other places you can visit on the outskirts of the city. Each itinerary offers practical information to enjoy the architecture, and visitors will be introduced to the culture and lifestyle of the city.

Sharma, A. Prakash, B.P. Mathur y J.K. [.en] The Lhasa House is a comprehensive survey of the architecture of the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, based on the Tibet Heritage Fund s official five-year conservation project in Tibet, during which the author and his team had extensive access to the buildings studied. The companion volume of The Temples of Lhasa (Serindia 2005), this book is concerned with the traditional vernacular architecture, in the form of the historic Lhasa town house, as it was built and lived in from the mid-17th to the mid-20th centuries. According to the earliest proper survey of the city, Lhasa in 1948 consisted of around 700 traditional Tibetan town houses, a small city by any standards. In 1993, little more than 300 of these remained. By January 2010, this had dwindled to less than 100. The most detailed documentation of its kind yet published, this book aims to define the Lhasa house as a distinct variety of traditional Tibetan architecture, by providing a technical analysis, discussion of the cultural framework and the development of a typology. The core of the work (chapter 5) presents architectural surveys (collected with the help of many others), photographs, maps and descriptions of 127 historic residential buildings, arranged by type, data compiled with some urgency during the demolition and rebuilding of the old city in the 1990s.

[.en] Casa Wabi, a nonprofit arts center located in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico, is a stage for world-renowned contemporary artists and architects to engage with the local community. Tadao Ando's remarkable Casa Wabi dots the Pacific coastline of Mexico with structures by Alberto Kalach, Alvaro Siza, Kengo Kuma, Gloria Cabral, Solano Benitez, Jorge Ambrosi, and Gabriela Etchegaray. Founded in 2013 by renowned Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, it combines artist residencies, a gallery, and living quarters with classrooms, gardens, and public space. Tadao Ando centers the foundation on a 312-meter-long wall; his trademark concrete structures radiate off it, capped in woven palm tree leaves for ventilation. These local palapa-style roofs are often the only element distinguishing indoor and outdoor spaces, an effect complemented by wooden shutters in place of paned glass windows. Other unusual native building materials include Mexican parota wood and marmolina. Led by director Carla Sodi, Casa Wabi challenges architects and artists to contemplate nature deeply, as it provides new tools for area residents. Casa Wabi is both a world-class architectural destination and a model for new strategies of creative intervention within economically depressed communities.

[.en] An essential new look at the Italian architect, writer, and designer whose work paved the way for the postmodern movement.

This crucial reassessment of Aldo Rossi’s (1931–1997) architecture simultaneously examines his writings, drawings, and product design, including the coffeepots and clocks he designed for the Italian firm Alessi. The first Italian to receive the Pritzker Prize, Rossi rejected modernism, seeking instead a form of architecture that could transcend the aesthetic legacy of Fascism in postwar Italy. Rossi was a visionary who did not allow contemporary trends to dominate his thinking. His baroque sensibility and poetic approach, found both in his buildings and in important texts like ‘The Architecture of the City’, inspired the critic Ada Louise Huxtable to describe him as “a poet who happens to be an architect.”

Diane Ghirardo explores different categories of structures—monuments, public buildings, cultural institutions, theaters, and cemeteries—drawing significantly on previously unpublished archival materials and always keeping Rossi’s own texts in the forefront. By delving into the relationships among Rossi’s multifaceted life, his rich body of work, and his own reflections, this book provides a critical new understanding of Rossi’s buildings and the place of architecture in postwar Italy.

Diane Y. F. Ghirardo is professor of the history and theory of architecture at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

[.en] Architecture is often seen as confronting the natural environment, its buildings and other objects inscribing boundaries and thereby expressing an internalized point of view. But there is another way of seeing and practicing architecture: By questioning the distinction between landmarks and the landscape they adjoin, architectural objects can themselves be environmental objects that amplify nature and increase our awareness of it. Portugal Lessons is a project of laba, or Laboratory Basel, founded in 2011 as a satellite studio of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne's School of Architecture. The book presents the studio's case studies of the country and processes of urbanization. Rooted in laba's latest research, it explores architectural forms of life and housing: whom we live with or open our home to and how permeable that boundary should be. The findings are presented in more than two hundred striking graphics, drawings, plans, and photographs. The book also features proposals for architectural interventions by laba's students, all of them tackling issues of housing.

[.en] This exhilarating and richly illustrated guide to Los Angeles's most exciting new buildings establishes the city as a mecca for forward-thinking and environmentally conscious architecture. Some of the world's leading architects are making their mark on Los Angeles's cityscape with exciting and innovative projects. Fifty of the most striking buildings are profiled in this book that features every type of architecture--houses, municipal structures, art museums, office buildings, performance spaces, and houses of worship. Some of the world's leading design firms, including Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Eric Owen Moss Architects, Selldorf Architects, and wHY Architecture, have contributed to the city's structural vernacular. While the projects here are as varied as the luminous Walt Disney Concert Hall by Gehry Partners and Bestor Architecture's compact housing development named "Blackbirds," each building embraces an unmistakably Californian aesthetic reimagined for a new century. With original photography, this is the first book to focus on the surge of creative building that has taken place in Los Angeles in the new millennium.

A new book recently published by Prestel sought to catalogue a few of the buildings completed after 2000 which continue that architectural legacy which has come to define the city. New Architecture Los Angeles features text by Brooke Hodges and photos of over 40 new Los Angeles buildings by local photographer Mike Kelley.

[.en] ‘Imagining the Modern’ explores Pittsburgh's ambitious modern architecture and urban renewal program that made it a gem of American postwar cities, and set the stage for its stature today. In the 1950s and '60s an ambitious program of urban revitalization transformed Pittsburgh and became a model for other American cities. Billed as the Pittsburgh Renaissance, this era of superlatives--the city claimed the tallest aluminum clad building, the world's largest retractable dome, the tallest steel structure--developed through visionary mayors and business leaders, powerful urban planning authorities, and architects and urban designers of international renown, including Frank Lloyd Wright, I.M. Pei, Mies van der Rohe, SOM, and Harrison & Abramovitz. These leaders, civic groups, and architects worked together to reconceive the city through local and federal initiatives that aimed to address the problems that confronted Pittsburgh's postwar development.

Initiated as an award-winning exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Art in 2014, ‘Imagining the Modern’ untangles this complicated relationship with modern architecture and planning through a history of Pittsburgh's major sites, protagonists, and voices of intervention. Through original documentation, photographs and drawings, as well as essays, analytical drawings, and interviews with participants, this book provides a nuanced view of this crucial moment in Pittsburgh's evolution. Addressing both positive and negative impacts of the era, ‘Imagining the Modern’ examines what took place during the city's urban renewal era, what was gained and lost, and what these histories might suggest for the city's future.

[.en] 'Architects, sculptors, painters, we all must return to the crafts!' declared architect Walter Gropius in his Bauhaus manifesto. Founded in 1919 as an art school in Weimar, the Bauhaus established itself as a major influence on twentieth- century art and design. Bauhaus students were taught by some of the most celebrated artists of the time, including Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, and Wassily Kandinsky. Having moved to Berlin in 1932 under architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, it was forced to close for good by the Gestapo in 1933. Uncovering the sources of inspiration that brought the Bauhaus into existence, from medieval cathedrals of Europe and Hokusai prints to William Morris and Arts and Crafts, The Spirit of the Bauhaus explores workshops and courses in detail, illustrating the extraordinary wealth of experimentation in every medium: ceramics, wood and metalwork, textiles, glass- painting, sculpture, mural, printing and binding, theater, architecture, and photography. This essential and accessible guide to the Bauhaus, published in time for the 100th anniversary of the school in 2019, celebrates a school that continues to be recognized as the most durable and influential source of modern ideas about art, design, and craft.

[.en] One hundred years after the founding of the Bauhaus in 1919, ‘Bauhaus and America’ considers the myriad ways in which the German art, design and architecture school influenced the art and culture of the United States after the World War II. ‘Bauhaus and America’ identifies one particular area of influence: the Bauhaus stage, which functioned like an interdisciplinary laboratory for diverse artistic experiments with light and movement―from light and kinetic art, to experimental film, to dance and performance art. When the rise of German National Socialism forced the Bauhaus to close in 1933, its members scattered, bringing their experimental ethos with them as they left Germany (many of them headed to the US). Thus the exploration of light and motion that began on the Bauhaus stage continued to spread. Gathered here are works exploring these themes by, among others, Josef Albers, Oskar Fischinger, László Moholy-Nagy, Wassily Kandinsky, Xanti Schawinsky, Oskar Schlemmer and Andor Weininger―alongside images of those numerous American artists impacted by the Bauhaus legacy, such as Merce Cunningham, Robert Rauschenberg, Sol LeWitt and Barbara Kasten.

[.en] ‘Bauhaus Goes West’ tells the fascinating story of the journey taken by the Bauhaus – both the concept behind the school and some of the individuals who represented it – from Germany to Britain and the United States. It is therefore a story of cultural exchange, not only between the Bauhaus émigrés and the countries to which they moved, but also in the other direction, focusing in particular on Britain. Most significantly, perhaps, it considers in detail the presence in the UK during the 1930s of three of the school’s most important figures – Gropius, Marcel Breuer and László Moholy-Nagy – using meticulous research to tell for the first time the stories of their British experiences in parallel. After considering some of the lesser-known Bauhäusler who stayed in Britain for life, the book concludes by returning to the lives of the main protagonists and their continuation of the Bauhaus ideals in America. Taking as its starting point the cultural connection between Britain and Germany in the early part of the 20th century, ‘Bauhaus Goes West’ offers a timely re-evaluation of the school’s influence on and relationship with modern art and design, offering fresh insights and challenging assumptions along the way.

[.en] Bauhaus inherited the mantle of beauty and craftsmanship from the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th Century but was founded on geometric principles, associated with Art Deco and firmly rooted in the challenge of modern production methods. Kandinsky, Klee, Franz Marc and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy taught at the Bauhaus school - created by Walter Gropius in 1919 and closed by the Nazis in the early 1930s - which influenced a wide range of design, from buildings to typography, furniture and painted forms. This luxurious new book explores the origins and extensive influence on the contemporary art and architecture.

[.en] The Elemental studio is headed by artistic director Alejandro Aravena, winner of the Pritzker Prize and director of the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016. The studio is based in the capital of Chile, Santiago, and is untraditionally composed of people with a variety of skills and abilities. Their analytical approach to architecture and urban planning has led them towards original solutions to social challenges, such as the housing shortage in Santiago’s economically disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Instead of designing cheap housing, Elemental builds “half houses” at the same cost and enables customers to build the other halves themselves. The combination of good design and the engagement of the owners creates more sustainable housing areas. In the series The Architect’s Studio the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art presents an exhibition on the Elemental studio, curated by Mette Marie Kallehauge and Kjeld Kjeldsen. The richly illustrated publication portrays Elemental’s working methods and work philosophy, as well as showing examples of their most important projects.

Led by Pritzker Prize–winning artistic director Alejandro Aravena (born 1967), the Elemental studio, based in Santiago, Chile, possesses a diversely skilled staff whose analytical approach has produced highly original solutions to social challenges such as the housing shortage in Santiago's poorer neighborhoods. Instead of designing cheap housing, Elemental builds "half houses" at the same cost and enables buyers to build the other half themselves. This combination of good design with the engagement of the buyers creates more sustainable housing areas. The studio works on both large and small scales in Chile and in the rest of the world; all projects bear the marks of their pragmatic approach. ‘Alejandro Aravena: Elemental’ portrays the company's working methods and provides examples of its most important projects.
