This survey of one of the world's leading architecture firms celebrates three decades of design excellence, environmental sustainability, and architectural innovation, and explores some fascinating proposals for the future of the practice.
In the areas of transportation, commercial, recreational, residential, and educational design, Grimshaw excels at delivering workable spaces that will serve its clients' needs for years to come. Among the many British projects featured in this book are the International Railway Terminal for Eurostar trains at Waterloo, the Eden Project in Cornwall, the Financial Times building in London Docklands, and the Regional Headquarters for the RAC at Bristol. The practice has also completed projects in Germany, such as the Frankfurt Exhibition Hall and VITRA furniture offices; the Ijberg Bridge in Amsterdam; the Plant Science Center in St Louis; and the Southern Cross Railway Station in Melbourne, Australia, for which the practice recently won the Lubetkin Prize. Other projects in Spain, Mexico, and Zurich are included as well. Beautifully presented, these projects reveal the evolution of a firm that is quickly growing in influence, and clearly shows that the ideals of economy, sustainability and integrity continue to inform their work.

The global changes taking place in the architectural world are crystallizing right now in Japan, with the past five years being considered one of the most innovative periods in current Japanese design history. Observed by architects and designers from around the world, these changes are illustrated and articulated in New Japan Architecture.

By documenting 48 important projects by 42 established and avant-garde architects, this book takes the reader through a journey of current trends in contemporary Japanese architecture and predicts future directions. While some buildings strive for the ultimate Zen white cube, others exemplify the search for the 'Wow' factor. Cutting edge modernity in some buildings is countered by a concern for sustainability in others. The selection of buildings in New Japan Architecture includes projects that are big and small, private and public, residential and commercial. The informative writings complement beautiful photographs that highlight the remarkable aspects of each building. A must-have book for those interested in architecture and Japan.

Mughal Architecture & Gardens gives an insight into what is undoubtedly one of the most impressive groups of monuments and gardens ever to be ascribed to a single royal lineage. Innovative and inspirational, these 16th and 17th century constructions demonstrate the staggering wealth and power of those responsible for their creation, notably the emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan.

Mughal architecture is a remarkable hybrid that fuses building forms and decorative schemes from Iran and Central Asia with long-established Indian practice. The most famous examples are the Red Fort in Dehli and Taj Mahal in Agra.

This beautifully illustrated book outlines the history of Mughal architecture and gardens, from stylistic developments under different emperors, to the geometric origins of Mughal design and decoration. Now the gardens are mostly lost, but Michell carefully depicts how they would have been; their structures and layouts, the favoured varieties of colorful flowers and scented plants, and the laborious but innovative methods sometimes used to create running water in areas without natural springs and streams.

The author gives particular attention to the major monuments and gardens in the imperial centers of Mughal power, namely Dehli, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and Lahore. These sections are accompanied by specially commissioned architectural plans as well as over 250 stunning color photographs. Written by a leading authority on Indian architecture, this magnificent book is the quintessential guide to Mughal architecture and garden design.

#books #architecture | Jakob + MacFarlane : Les Docks

Texto en francés e inglés

The origins of Les Docks rest upon a genuine historic monument, one of the first constructions in reinforced concrete built in the heart of Paris, in 1907. More than a mère restoration, the project by JAKOB + MACFARLANE appears as a “Plug-over” enhanced by exterior “grafts”, crisscrossed by circulations totally open to the public…

This bilingual French/English book provides a richly illustrated overview of all the phases of the project, from design to construction, notably of the “Plug-over”. Frédéric Migayrou, in his essay “Frameworks of intrication,” renders an in-depth analysis of the work of Jakob+MacFarlane. Their architecture has established the foundations of a new materiality, a genuine physics of the context, in which the context becomes a resource that redefines the program. The architects draw upon techniques, uses, aesthetic practices, and blend in stories to create a composite material that reactivates and challenges the sites they take on. With Les Docks, a historic monument and one of the sources of modern architecture, the architects raise the height of the existing structure and expand its spaces. Now the building “stands out as a signal, an authentic urban system conjugating the historic and the contemporary in a totally new way.”

The firm of Dominique Jakob and Brendan MacFarlane has produced some of the most innovative and experimental architecture in France. The architects are recognized for their creativity and their critical and conceptual approach: the Georges restaurant atop the Centre Pompidou, the FRAC Centre in Orleans the Orange Cube and the Euronews headquarters in Lyon…

Frédéric Migayrou is deputy director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou and Chair Professor at the Bartlett School, University of London (UCL).

Residential design forms the core of Steven Ehrlich's award-winning architectural practice. Sixteen houses are presented here, designs characterized by the fusion of powerful modernist forms with the cultural, climatic, and contextual particulars of place. Ehrlich spent six years living, teaching, traveling, and studying indigenous vernacular architecture in North and West Africa. During that time he was immersed in the visceral power and raw beauty of 'Architecture Without Architects' and dazzled by settings like the luminous Zaria Mosque in Nigeria, the textured hill towns of Tunisia, the maze-like souks of Fez, the protected and intimate courtyard houses of Marrakesh, the gravity-defying raised forts of Ghana, and the interconnected desert cities of Algeria. At the same time Ehrlich had a deep commitment to modernism, with its focus on minimalism, honesty in materials, and rooted connection to the land. Over a thirty-year career he has brought these two strands together in the houses he has designed in the desert landscape of Southern California and the Southwest. There are commonalities in these houses'generous volumes, visual clarity, large windows, interlocking rooms, protected courtyards, structural honesty, richly textured materials, and a connection to nature'but each home is a new beginning, a chance to learn and to create a spatial experience.

Bolle Tham (b. 1970) und Martin Videgard (b. 1968) founded their architecture firm in Stockholm in 1999. Their House K and Double House (both completed in 2005) received widespread attention; they finally won international recognition with the Kalmar Museum of Art (which opened in 2008). They are among the young architects invited by Herzog & de Meuron to participate in the Ordos 100 project in China and are currently planning the new School of Architecture on the campus of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm; their Moderna MuseetMalm has just opened its doors. In their designs, Tham and Videgard take as their starting points the Nordic tradition closeness to nature and economy of means as well as the concrete parameters of the project on which they are working; the result, however, is buildings with surprising and fascinating forms. Editor Johan Linton is an architect and art historian working in Goteborg; photography: Ake E:son Lindman; the book was designed by renowned Swedish graphic designer Henrik Nygren.

The Jewish Museum in Berlin tells the story of German-Jewish history from the fourth century to the present. It consists of two buildings: the first, a former courthouse, was built in the eighteenth century, and the second, a massive extension that opened to the public in 2001, was designed by the world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind (born 1946). Libeskind's building is comprised of a zinc façade and a set of three underground allegorical roads. The first leads to the main stairs, and by implication to the continuation of Berlin's history in the Museum; the second leads outdoors into the E.T.A. Hoffmann Garden, representing the exile and emigration of the Jews from Germany; and the third road leads to a dead end, representing "the Holocaust void." This road cuts through the ensemble as a whole, and evokes, in the architect's words, "that which can never be exhibited when it comes to Jewish Berlin history: humanity reduced to ashes." For Libeskind, a Polish Jew raised not far from Berlin who lost many relatives in the Holocaust, this extraordinary building was an intensely personal undertaking with numerous responsibilities. This volume details this most freighted and complex of buildings.
