[.en] This new book is the 10th title in the successful series of monographs on the works of the world famous architect Renzo Piano, and covers the creative thinking and of Piano as he developed his ideas for the Centro Botin, a new art gallery and cultural centre in the city of Santander in Spain. The Centre was inaugurated in June 2017 and is composed of two buildings of different sizes, supported on columns and connected by a walkway. All are partly suspended over the sea. It is built on the site of an old ferry port terminal, and Piano`s brief covered the most important aspects of the creation of an art gallery, the use of the light in a south facing seaport, both inside and outside the building, and the necessity to create a visual link between the city and the sea.. The project is supported by the Foundation Marcelino Botin, chaired until his death in 2014 by Emilio Botin, the Chairman of Santander Bank. Within this beautifully illustrated book, Renzo Piano narrates the story of the creation and construction of this extraordinary building through sketches, drawings and photographs from his own archives, most of which are published here for the first time, thus completing an extraordinary vision of this amazing building, that will appeal to fellow architects and visitors to Santander.

[.en] Architects the world over are familiar with the name Bauhaus. A century after it was founded, the principles, philosophies and memories of this avant-garde school are still very much alive. Bauhaus is a legend, and its legacy continues to shape our world in many different ways. To mark its centenary, Detail has produced an autograph book in which 100 architects from all over the world wish the school a happy birthday. Their short texts, photos and sketches reveal what Bauhaus means to them. The result is a colourful album of anecdotes, experiences and personal stories that will raise a smile or make you think. Rather than defining what Bauhaus is, the short statements show the extent to which Bauhaus is still relevant today.

In the Chinese horoscope, 2019 is the year of the earth pig. It could be a good year, for in China the pig is a symbol not only of luck, but also of wealth. The 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, which will take place in 2019, is therefore quite fitting. Although Tom Wolfe may have doubted it in his critique From Bauhaus to Our House, the Bauhaus was a stroke of luck, its legacy indubitably impressive. This is why Sandra Hofmeister asked 100 architects from around the world to consider these questions: Is the idea of the Bauhaus relevant to their work, and does it represent a reference value for designs, processes and the architects’ own self-perception?

Indeed, the Bauhaus has not touched all the architects, to each of whom a double page is devoted, as closely as it has Tom Emerson of London’s 6a Architects. In 1992, he spent the summer there, removed the rear wall of the refectory as Gropius had originally planned to do, and swam naked in the lake near the Meisterhäuser, which “with their GDR-style gabled roofs and added-on rabbit hutches … were not masterful at all.” Walter Gropius and Oskar Schlemmer did not come and go at everyone’s house, as they did at Roman Delugan’s mother’s place. Not everyone experiences the Bauhaus spirit, the “unity of function, form and material-appropriate building, a rational treatment of resources, but also sensuality, feel and colour” every day in the white, black, blue and red design of the Munich office stairway as do Andreas Meck and Axel Frühauf. And not everyone understands the Bauhaus as “a challenge to change society by means of design” as Anna Heringer does, or tries to explore proximity to the Bauhaus in a programmatic way, as Volker Staab does. Indeed, Staab’s new entrance tower to the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin became possible only by means of a digital process. However, this may be the movement’s merit: from 100 experts, the Bauhaus provokes 100 different responses. For the reader, this book, fittingly designed and printed on Gmund Bauhaus Dessau paper in honour of the occasion, certainly represents wealth and luck.

[.en] As founder of the Bauhaus school, Walter Gropius (1883-1969) is one of the icons of 20the century architecture. While his early buildings in Pomerania were still strongly marked by his teacher Peter Behrens, after an expressionistic phase focused on handicraft, he ultimately arrived at geometric abstraction. During the entire period he collaborated with other architects, founding the collective known as "The Architects Collaborative" in the US. The comprehensive monograph documents all 74 of the known buildings by Gropius that were realized, including many early works which he never publicized; but it also critically examines his unbuilt projects. The book is illustrated with new photographs by the author, historical figures, and with as new plans drawn by the author.

[.en] Soviet Asia explores the Soviet modernist architecture of Central Asia. Italian photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego crossed the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR. The resulting images showcase the majestic, largely unknown, modernist buildings of the region. Museums, housing complexes, universities, circuses, ritual palaces – all were constructed using a composite aesthetic. Influenced by Persian and Islamic architecture, pattern and mosaic motifs articulated a connection with Central Asia. Grey concrete slabs were juxtaposed with colourful tiling and rectilinear shapes broken by ornate curved forms: the brutal designs normally associated with Soviet-era architecture were reconstructed with Eastern characteristics.

Many of the buildings shown in Soviet Asia are recorded here for the first time, making this book an important document, as despite the recent revival of interest in Brutalist and Modernist architecture, a number of them remain under threat of demolition. The publication includes two contextual essays, one by Alessandro De Magistris (architect and History of Architecture professor, University of Milan, contributor to the book Vertical Moscow) and the other by Marco Buttino (Modern and Urban History professor, University of Turin, specializing in the history of social change in the USSR).

[.en] In recent years, a refreshingly unconventional architectural scene - outside the mainstream - has established itself in China. Its representatives, many of whom were trained in the West, are known for their sensitive handling of space, light, and material, and by their engagement with context and their own tradition. Since Wang Shu, one of the most important representatives of the profession, won the Pritzker Prize, international professionals have become more aware of China's new architecture. Twenty fascinating examples of different building typologies - many with social relevance - as well as an introductory essay illustrate current building activities and provide an insight into the cultural and architectonic influences.

[.en] The ongoing introduction of digital design tools in the architectural professional practice does not only influence the architectural design product, but equally affects the underlying design process. A digital design process taking full advantage of the potential of digital design tools is increasingly different from a paper & pencil based design development process. This publication shows how the digital architectural design tools alter the education process of future architects. The study assumes that the use of digital design and fabrication tools will require the architecture curriculum to adapt. It concludes by proposing to develop a new Digital Architectural Design Education model which differs significantly from the traditional paper & pencil pedagogical model.

[.en] In architecture, a span is something to be conquered, a challenge to overcome. For instance by reducing the number of supports, expanding floor slabs horizontally, tearing into the open air, and shedding more light on the ground floor. But span, or “vão” in Portuguese, also means a project or an action that ends in failure: something that was done in vain. For Brazilian architects, the word vão is almost always a synonym of freedom. In Brazil, modernization was touted as a leap over the country’s history, cast as “backwardness” and, in the case of architecture, over the absence of two traditions: the classical and the artisanal—an abysmal jump, in the face of the immense scale of its territory. And a challenge met head-on by an ambitious aesthetic avant-garde, invested in new design and remarkable engineering. Brazil is a country “condemned to the modern,” said the critic Mário Pedrosa, conceiving this condemnation as liberation from tradition and as freedom to transform what could be done in vain (“em vão”) in the effective cultural conquest of the free span (“vão livre”). This publication assembles representative projects and works of Brazilian architecture made between 1920 and 2018, among them Oscar Niemeyer, Roberto Burle Marx, PAulo Mendes da Rocha, Sérgio Ferro and Lina Bo Bardi. It features crosscutting dialogues between the presented projects and highlights the intersections between architecture, music, literature, cinema, and performing arts.

[.en] Architects have always dreamed of shaping the future filled with seemingly impossible structures that break with the past. Buildings for Tomorrow reviews forty such visionary projects. More than thirty architects from nineteen countries, from famous names to little-known innovators, have used the latest technological advances to bring their constructions into being, blurring the line that separates the everyday from the realms of science fiction. All these structures challenge convention and break the mould. Whether inspired by NASA capsules or nautilus shells, these buildings show that imagination and creativity can work on a variety of scales and budgets, and can set a thought-provoking agenda for an alternative architecture of tomorrow.

[.en] The cities in which we live today are unfortunately not the cities that we need for a humane and sustainable tomorrow. Because societies and politicians are desperately looking for solutions and ideas for the urban areas of the future, explorations of utopias and radical approaches to city planning have become the predominant themes in contemporary architecture. Utopia Forever, conceived by Lukas Feireiss, is a collection of current projects and concepts from architecture, city planning, urbanism, and art that point beyond the restrictions of the factual to unleash the potential of creative visions. This inspiring work explores how current challenges for architecture, mobility, and energy as well as the logistics of food consumption and waste removal can be met. Text features by both architects and theorists give added insight. Whether created by established architects and artists or new talents, the examples in Utopia Forever are important catalysts for fundamental change and are radically shaping our notions of life in the future.

[.en] Herman Hertzberger (born 1932) is one of the most important and critically influential figures in international architecture of the last 50 years. He has consistently championed a fundamentally humanist modern architecture, rooted in its place and history, while simultaneously opening up new possibilities for dwelling. Today Hertzberger is rightly regarded as the worlds foremost designer of schools, a building type he has almost singlehandedly redefined. His innovative and fundamentally humane workplaces constitute some of the most compelling contemporary reinterpretations of this type of building. In this monograph, acclaimed author Robert McCarter examines Hertzbergers most important architectural works through analysis of the design process and guiding ideas, particularly as these reflect Hertzbergers engagement with the Modernist tradition, architectural history, urban space and the way we experience it. Robert McCarter is a practising architect, author and Professor of Architecture at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis. His monographs on Louis I. Kahn and Frank Lloyd Wright were finalists for the inaugural Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) International Book Awards, 2006.

The intention, here, is to think differently about pre-existing conditions and to be particular about them. I offer examples of different spatial characteristics around abandonment in North American legacy cities. The variations are mesmerizingly complicated and varied. A vacant lot is never one thing. Terrains have different scales, elevations, adjacencies, uses, climates and cultures. And just as no one territory is the same, so no one idea is sufficient. The goal, in considering these disparate ideas, is not to imagine any singular solution but to understand the many possibilities. Ideas can be tested, substituted and combined.

[.en] The Ashmolean Museum and the Albertina are collaborating on a two-part exhibition project that will examine anew the role and the significance of drawing in Raphael's career. The Ashmolean holds the greatest collection of Raphael drawings in the world, and the Albertina is the custodian of a major collection including some of the most beautiful and important of the artist's sketches. Taken together, the two collections provide extraordinary resources that, amplified by carefully-selected international loans, will allow us to transform our understanding of the art of Raphael.

The Oxford exhibition is based on new research by Dr Catherine Whistler of the Ashmolean Museum and Dr Ben Thomas from the University of Kent, in collaboration with Dr Achim Gnann of the Albertina. It will take Raphael's art of drawing as its focus, with the concept of eloquence as its underlying structure. Oratory runs as a linking thread in Raphael's drawings, which stand out for the importance given to the study of gestures, facial expressions, and drapery. Moreover, Raphael treated the expressive figure of the orator - poet, philosopher, muse, apostle, saint or sibyl - in fascinating and significant ways throughout his life.

This selection of drawings demonstrates how Raphael created a specific mode of visual invention and persuasive communication through drawing. He used drawing both as conceptual art (including brainstorming sheets) and as a practice based on attentive observation (such as drawing from the posed model). Yet Raphael's drawings also reveal how the process of drawing in itself, with its gestural rhythms and spontaneity, can be a form of thought, generating new ideas. The Oxford exhibition will present drawings that span Raphael's entire career, encompassing many of his major projects and exploring his visual language from inventive ideas to full compositions. The extraordinary range of drawings by Raphael in the Ashmolean and the Albertina, enhanced by appropriate loans, will enable this exhibition to cast new light on this familiar artist, transforming our understanding of Raphael's art.

This book preludes a major exhibition, which will run from June to September 2017, with a range of events happening throughout this time.

[.en] One of the most important architects of the twentieth century, Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) was remarkably prolific and intriguingly idiosyncratic. A participant in the efforts to reshape Italian culture in her youth, Bo Bardi immigrated to Brazil in 1946, where her practice evolved within the social and cultural realities of her adopted country. While she continued to work with industrial materials, she added simple building techniques and naturalistic forms to her designs, striving to create large, multiuse spaces that promoted public life. Lina Bo Bardi is the first comprehensive study of the architect's life and work. Author Zeuler Lima, the leading authority on Bo Bardi, presents her activities on two continents, examining how ethical and social considerations influenced her intellectual engagement with modern architecture and providing an indispensable guide to her writings and her experimental, iconic designs.
