"Architecture of Consequence" began life as the Dutch presentation at the Sao Paolo Architecture Biennale in 2009. "Shape our country!" was the call that the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) made to its public over a six-month period. The result was a deluge of proposals, as the people of the Netherlands rose to the challenge of naming their needs: new guidelines for food production, alternative energy sources, solutions for space shortage, social cohesion, a healthy living environment and the recalibration of economic value. Formulating responses to such fundamental questions of our time is, it seems, everyone's business. All of the above issues converge at spatial planning and design, where real opportunities for social innovation still await. For this project, the Netherlands Architecture Institute selected 22 Dutch architecture firms with genuinely innovative ideas on these seven imperatives and the will to do something about them. The result is an agenda for the future of our living environment and a proof that designers have the creative power to make it happen. "Architecture of Consequence" proves that any notion that architecture should be an "expression of its time," or should do no more than express the vanity of its commissioners, pales into insignificance when compared to its tremendous potential for resolving urgent societal problems.

[…] La Fundación Bilbao 700-III Millenium Fundazioa y la editorial Muelle de Uribitarte Editores vuelven a unir sus esfuerzos para recuperar el recuerdo de un acontecimiento y de un personaje singulares de las últimas décadas del siglo XIX: la demolición del puente viejo de San Antón y la trayectoria vital de Pacho Gaminde, viajero incansable y uno de los mayores chirenes de la historia de Bilbao.

“La demolición del puente de San Antón” es el título del volumen elaborado por Ignacio Uribarri Jaureguizar (Bilbao, 1942) dentro de la colección BILBAINOS RECUPERADOS de la Fundación Bilbao 700-III Millenium Fundazioa. A lo largo de casi 130 páginas, Uribarri describe el día a día de “aquella generación de hombres prodigiosos” que logró catapultar hacia el futuro a aquel Bilbao diezmado por las Guerras Carlistas y el cólera, hasta el punto de multiplicar por dos la población de la Villa en apenas 24 años.

“En aquel Bilbao sietecallero cantó Gayarre cuando el Teatro Real le consideró demasiado costoso para Madrid. Tocó Braylowski, recitó Ercilla, pensaron Unamuno y Sabino Arana, Alberto del Palacio construyó el Puente Colgante para la Ría y el Palacio de Cristal para El Retiro, Ibarra y Martínez Rivas hicieron Altos Hornos, Sota y Echebarrieta mil barcos, el Dr. Areilza el Hospital de Triano, Gortázar el Banco de Vizcaya y en el frontón de Abando jugaba el Chiquito”, señala Uribarri en un párrafo del libro.

Poco antes de que Bilbao diera el gran salto al otro lado de la Ría con la anexión de Abando, la alta burguesía bilbaina residente en las Siete Calles había convertido la anteiglesia de Deusto en su lugar preferido de veraneo. Eran famosas por entonces las sardinas de Bermeo, las guindas de Barakaldo, el txakoli de Santurtzi y las naranjas de Bakio.

En aquel preciso momento de la historia de Bilbao, la demolición del puente viejo de San Antón —con el fatal hundimiento del arco central que se saldó con seis personas muertas— fue motivo de un encendido al más alto nivel. El ingeniero Pablo de Alzola, coautor del nuevo puente de San Antón —dinamitado en la Guerra Civil— y del proyecto del Ensanche y Alcalde de Bilbao durante la demolición del puente, justificó tal medida en nombre del progreso y desde el convencimiento de que contribuiría a reducir el riesgo de inundaciones en las Siete Calles.

Frente a él, el impresor Juan E. Delmás, el escritor Antonio de Trueba y la sociedad recreativa Kurding Club —medio centenar de “veinteañeros educados en Londres y París”— propusieron conservar el puente por su valor artístico e histórico. “Tres monumentos tenía Bilbao que merecían conservarse a toda costa: la torre de Zubialdea, única casa solariega e infanzona anterior a la fundación de la Villa [demolida en 1865]; la iglesia de Santiago erigida también con anterioridad a la fundación de la Villa en 1300, y el Puente de San Antón, anterior también a la fundación de Bilbao”, escribió Trueba en “El Noticiero Bilbaino”.

Por último, Emiliano de Arriaga, autor del “Lexicón Bilbaino” y Teniente de Alcalde en la época del derribo, solicitó la elaboración de una maqueta que recordara para siempre al viejo puente.

La exploración del lenguaje abstracto vuelve a centrar la oferta de la Sala Rekalde con una exposición creada para la reflexión y para dejarse llevar por los sentidos. Haegue Yang, una artista coreana afincada en Berlín, investiga en 'Desigualdad simétrica' sobre las posibilidades de cruzar la abstracción y la narración en un mismo espacio. «Para ello emplea elementos industriales, algunos diseñados por ella, y otros que ya existen en el mercado», explicó ayer la comisaria de la muestra, Leire Vergara.

Yang ha pasado su creación por importantes museos de Hamburgo, Londres, Francfort y Los Ángeles. Su trabajo culmina en Bilbao con una nueva instalación dividida en tres espacios. En ellos, la artista retrata varias historias con connotaciones políticas y también deja fluir su propia personalidad.

La primera parte evoca a la infancia indochina de la novelista Marguerite Duras, en la que el recuerdo de su segregación social inspira a la artista. Para ello combina las persianas venecianas con cañones de luz roja que inundan la zona de una cálida melancolía.

Y el último espacio se presenta más íntimo, en el que Yang invita a utilizar un micrófono abierto. «El sonido que se emite altera los focos de luz», explicó la autora. Además, en todo el recorrido hay contraste de temperaturas, sombras, diferentes olores creados a partir de esencias que simulan la tierra húmeda, el café... Además de esta exposición, en el hall de la Sala Rekalde se ubicará la plataforma itinerante 'If I can't dance, I'dont want to be part of your revolution'. Este proyecto investiga el impacto del género del performance en el arte contemporáneo y se completa con grupos de lectura para compartir pensamientos con el público sobre la idea de la mascarada.

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is widely considered the greatest American architect of all time; his work ushered in the modern era and remains highly influential today—half a century after his death. Taschen's three-volume monograph covers all his designs (numbering approximately 1100), realized and unrealized. Made in collaboration with the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives in Taliesin, Arizona, this collection leaves no stone unturned in examining and paying tribute to Wright's astonishing life and work.

Whereas the first volume covers the early Chicago years , this second volume deals with the work after World War I, beginning with the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and covering Wright’s quest to design affordable houses with systematic construction methods and the Usonian concept house, with the forest-sited villa Fallingwater being the dramatic climax.

The years spent working in Japan were followed by personal turmoil. In late 1922, Wright divorced from first wife Catherine, and the following year married Miriam Noel. Yet barely six months later she left, initiating a bitter divorce. Shortly after, Wright met his third wife, Olgivanna. During this difficult period a second fire at Taliesin strained his already parlous finances; the bank foreclosed, leaving him without home or studio. With nowhere to practice, he started writing magazine articles, and his autobiography (published in 1932 to great acclaim).
    
From 1917 through the Depression, up until 1942, though he designed continually, Wright saw many projects go unrealized, but nevertheless had the chance to build on new concepts and in new regions. His block building system led to idiosyncratic works like the famous Ennis house in Los Angeles, and in 1936 he completed the Herbert Jacobs house, using his new "Usonian" techniques, designed to be affordable for the middle-American family. The same year he moved to Arizona where, at the age of 71, Wright embraced his rugged new life in the desert, and with his students started building the Taliesin West complex. After receiving a gold medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, he returned to see his Johnson Administration Building opened to great fanfare, nationwide publicity, and lines around the block waiting to tour inside. Despite adversity, Wright emerged from this era with reputation restored and vitality renewed—as manifested in Fallingwater and the Johnson building—while his Usonian homes began to alter the way Americans lived.

About the author:
Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer became Frank Lloyd Wright’s apprentice at the Taliesin Fellowship in 1949. In 1957, he attended the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, returning in 1958 to continue his apprenticeship with Wright until his death in 1959. He remains at Taliesin to this day, as director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, a vice-president of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and author of numerous publications on Wright's life and work.

Peter Gössel runs a practice for the design of museums and exhibitions. He is the editor of Taschen's monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra, as well as the editor of the Basic Architecture Series.

The Beyond programme of art is utterly unique in both concept and scale. Launched in 1997 in Leidsche Rijn, the largest new-style housing estate in the Netherlands, its art exploits the relationship between urban planning, landscape, architecture and the community that takes shape in this setting near Utrecht.

In 2006 he received the Rayleigh medal, the premier award of the (British) Institute of Acoustics.

El libro tiene su germen en un seminario internacional sobre arte público celebrado en Zaragoza durante la primavera de 2008. Las diferentes intervenciones analizan experiencias que se han ido desarrollando en todo el mundo en torno a la profusión del arte público urbano y sus consecuencias para la regeneración social de los barrios y de la economía de las ciudades. Los casos estudiados proceden de varias ciudades españolas, europeas y americanas y abordan este fenómeno con la riqueza que aportan los diferentes modos de actuación en el paisaje urbano.

Fruto de un seminario internacional, sus contenidos no son exactamente las actas de aquel evento, pues en el tiempo transcurrido algunos autores han retocado sus ponencias, otros no han llegado a redactarlas y, además, figuran contribuciones de expertos que no participaron en dicho seminario. El resultado es una compilación de veintitrés artículos que conjugan unidad temática general con una variedad de contenidos específicos sobre las interrelaciones del arte con el desarrollo urbano y social de barrios artísticos en nuestras ciudades.

Como escribió Jean-Paul Clébert: «Un diccionario de símbolos es una empresa demente y digna sólo de un personaje de Borges». La dificultad al abordar una tarea semejante viene dada en primer lugar por la polivalencia de los símbolos que hace imposible que se agote la significación de ninguno de ellos y es preciso en cada caso examinar los contextos psicosocial, histórico e iconográfico, antes de aventurar una interpretación. Esta premisa, además, hace muy difícil un elenco exhaustivo de los mismos. El objetivo de Federico Revilla es que esta obra sea una base, un punto de partida para la profundización iconográfica y simbológica de quienes se sientan atraídos por estos horizontes.
