[.en] ‘World Film Locations: Paris’ takes readers on an unforgettable tour of the City of Lights past and present through the many films that have been set there. Along the way, we revisit iconic tourist sites from the Eiffel Tower – whose stairs and crossbars inspired more than one famous chase scene – to the Moulin Rouge overlooking the famously seedy Place Pigalle. Other films explore lesser-known quarters usually tucked away from the tourist’s admiring gaze. Handsomely illustrated with full-colour film stills and contemporary photographs, more than fifty scenes are individually considered with special attention to their use of Paris’s topography as it intersects with characters, narrative and plot. A host of important genres and cinematic movements are featured, including poetic realism, the New Wave, cinéma-verité, the literary works of the Left Bank Group, and Luc Besson’s slickly stylised cinéma du look. Meanwhile, essays foreground contributions from Francophone African directors and émigré filmmakers.

[.en] ‘World Film Locations: Madrid’ is a trip through the urban space conceived as film location. The premise is that these locations must have been protagonist of films shot in Madrid since the silent era to the present. Madrid is the film capital of the Hispanic World from the standpoint of production. Being also one of the most visited cities in the world, this book tries to discover its most imaginative side for the visitor who dares to take this journey. But it is a tour that is not covered in the guidebooks. The different suggestions are explained in a series of essays written by experts, which analyses the role that the city plays in the stories filmed in Madrid. This is a city of contrasts where lives high culture (the best universities, the Museo del Prado, etc.), with the most popular and sparkling nightlife that began with La Movida and Almodóvar.

These essays account for this life contrast, addressing from the corralas (popular architecture) in Egdar Neville’s films, to the underground cinema of Iván Zulueta. Madrid’s spaces and their films are visually discussed as well through 44 microanalysis of sequences, whose selection criteria has been its importance in the plot and its ability to represent the true spirit of the city, rather than its tourist attractive. Casual visitors or permanent inhabitants, and general lovers of Spanish culture in a broad sense, will find in these pages reasons to wander through Madrid’s films and streets.

From ‘Death of a Cyclist’ to ‘Open Your Eyes to The Limits of Control’, Madrid has graced the big screen countless times across a wide variety of genres enacted by a similarly eclectic array of directors, including Carlos Saura, Luis Buñuel, and Pedro Almodovar. With the aim of capturing the full range of portrayals of the city onscreen, this volume pairs short synopses of scenes from fifty films with an accompanying array of dynamic full-color film stills. These scenes are set in context through a series of incisive essays that examine significant periods from Madrid’s rich film history, as well as its key industry figures and recurring themes. Packed with fun facts, ‘World Film Locations: Madrid’ offers a fascinating -and often surprising- tour of the many film representations of Madrid. For jetsetters planning a jaunt to this richly cinematic city, the book also includes photographs of locations as they appear now and city maps with information on how to locate key features.

Como explica su coordinador, Lorenzo J. Torres Hortelano, “what readers will find are the myths and the facts that explain what cinema is today through the representation of the city”.

[.en] Barcelona is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. A permanent showcase of the work of acclaimed architect Antoni Gaudí, it also has a long and rich cinematic legacy. Great directors from all over the world – among them Woody Allen, Pedro Almodóvar and Michelangelo Antonioni – have set their films there. World Film Locations: Barcelona is the first book of its kind to explore the rich cinematic history of this seductive Catalonian city.

The illuminating essays collected here cover essential themes of the city’s cinematic history, including the origins of cinema in Barcelona; the role of Ciutat Vella (old quarter) as a film set; the influential Barcelona School of the 1960s; the film presence of Gaudí and his work; changing attitudes and urban renewal before and after the 1992 Olympics; and the emergence of a new generation of female filmmakers that have made Barcelona the centre of their cinematic explorations. This book will be a welcome addition to the libraries of anyone enchanted by the beauty of Barcelona, whether in person on the big screen.

[.en] Two periods of Brazilian film history are particularly notable for their artistic momentum: the Cinema Novo movement of the 1960s and early '70s, and the film revival from the mid 1990s onwards. What makes them especially strong, this book argues, is their utopian impulse. By adopting Utopia as a theme, as well as a method of film analysis, Lucia Nagib unveils, organises and interprets a fascinating wealth of recurrent images, which are a bridge between a cinema strongly concerned with the national project and another informed by global culture. Outstanding recent films, such as "Central Station", "Perfumed Ball", "Hans Staden", "Orfeu", "City of God" and "The Trespasser", are illuminated by Nagib's sharp analysis, which detects utopian, anti-utopian and even dystopian impulses in them. They are at once representatives of a political arena in constant struggle against underdevelopment and legitimate (as well as critical) heirs of past cinematic traditions. Throwing new light on a large selection of Cinema Novo and contemporary films, this book thus presents a national cinema that rejects the end of history and of film history, while benefiting from, and contributing to, a new transnational aesthetics.

[.en] This study provides a meticulous account of the reception and regulation of cinema in the United States during a decade of upheaval, transition, and industrial consolidation that affected all aspects of film culture. Written in close dialogue with contemporary journalism, the volume focuses on Los Angeles film culture from 1905 to 1915. The study discusses exhibition practices, regulatory efforts and reforms, the critical role of women in all areas of film culture, and the burgeoning movement of film journalism that pivoted around the feature format and serial films. Jan Olsson makes an important contribution to both film history and urban studies on the Progressive Era as it took place within a multiethnic city predicated on Midwestern sensibilities.

[.en] ‘Scenes from the City’ is a celebration of the rise of New York-shot films, particularly after the MOFTB was formed in 1966 making the city a much more welcoming film location. New York could, once again, lure talent such as Woody Allen and Martin Scorcese, to its streets - streets that could provide both a desolate urban prairie for Midnight Cowboy or a delightful 5th Avenue shopping romp for a Mrs. Golightly. New York's cityscape has enriched the movies it's been a part of with its diverse and entrancing visage, not unlike the faces of the industry's most beautiful and talented actors and actresses. ‘Scenes from the City’ is an affectionate ovation for this 'character' that rarely receives billing, but always steals the show.

[.en] This book traces the dynamic relationship between film and the city. How do film and urban space work together to challenge and forge our changing ideas of modern urban life? How does film intervene with what is erased or retained from the existing urban fabric? What are the possibilities and limits of contemporary utopic visions built into urban form? How does film itself work as a utopic space? How has the space of the cinema created a vibrant public space over the course of last century, and what is its future? These are some of the questions tackled in this book. Drawing on films as diverse as Man with a Movie Camera, Bicycle Thieves, Dogville, Safe, Los Angeles Plays Itself, Chungking Express and The Circle, the book identifies and analyses the major debates about the crucial historical relationship between film and the city to consider existing and future possibilities.

‘Film and Urban Space: Critical Possibilities’ traces recurring debates about what constitutes film’s political potential and argues that the relation between film and urban space has been crucial to these debates and their historical transformations. The book demonstrates that in the attempt to follow certain prescriptions – shooting on location, disrupting normalizing time, experimenting with memory, interlinking the spaces of screen and cinema – films invariably use the relation between film and urban space as a kind of laboratory, testing anew received prescriptions but invariably encountering new opportunities and new limits. A wide range of key films, from Dziga Vertov’s 1929 ‘Man with a Movie Camera’ to Jia Zhangke’s 2008 ‘24 City’, are discussed in depth, each offering an argument for how the encounter between specific manifestations of modern urban space and politically engaged film strategies has served to challenge the status quo and stimulate critical thinking. An insightful and thought-provoking read, Film and Urban Space: Critical Possibilities presents scholars and advanced students in Film Studies with a compelling argument for the impact of urban space in creating film’s critical political and ethical possibilities.

Narrative environments are a compositional strategy to re-present the times in a life of a building. Narratives associate the many different times and spaces inherent in a particular space at a specific time. The reuse of materials, transformative interventions, continuation of cultural phenomena through built infrastructure result in densely woven narratives of the built environment with adaptive reuse as their tool.

[.en] Earth building is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the most modern construction methods of our time. What economic, environmental, and social conditions are necessary for an upscaling of earth to occur? In the future, cement, the most important component of concrete, will –as well as other finite resources– become less viable to produce and significantly more expensive. Considering appropriate alternatives for building materials is becoming imperative. This book presents a wide scope of built and unbuilt projects as well as strategies that can be implemented to edify processes of building, adapting the use of earth to each unique culture and context. Using impressive examples, the authors demonstrate ground-breaking technological innovations that highlight the advantages of this material: from its worldwide availability to the possibility of comprehensive recycling, from climate-neutral production to socially just implementation, including a focus on emerging economies. This book reveals the incredible potentials of earthen architecture – for people and for the entire planet.

As environmental pressures continue to increase and concerns about resource scarcity continue to grow, a number of prominent architectural thinkers are returning to one of the world's oldest construction methods: earth building. Upscaling Earth showcases innovative thinking about materials and the potential for earth building to replace more environmentally damaging, resource-intensive materials like concrete. What economic, environmental, and social conditions, the book asks, would be necessary for an upscaling of earth to occur? Presenting a wide range of built and unbuilt projects and outlining strategies that can be implemented to adapt the use of earth to each unique culture and context, Upscaling Earth demonstrates groundbreaking technological innovations that highlight the advantages of this material. From worldwide availability to the possibility of comprehensive recycling, from climate-neutral production to socially just implementation, the book reveals the incredible potential of earthen architecture.

[.es] The book tells the story of communal living from about 1850 until today. Three motives of sharing - the economic, political and social intention - divide the residential objects, which are investigated in a historical analysis and allocated to nine development phases. The author investigates and compares different forms of housing and the way they developed from their origins until today; she illustrates how everyday shared living and the degrees of privacy in housing are practiced in Europe. Owing to its comprehensive documentation, the analysis of typologies, layout plans, and user and expert interviews, the book can also be considered to be a lexicon or handbook on communal living. A detailed overview that is unique in this form.

[.en] The projects featured in Close to Home are within a 15-mile radius of where Louisville architect Michael Koch was born, raised, and has practiced for almost forty years. Educated at the University of Kentucky School of Architecture during the Dean Anthony Eardley era, where he was taught by Guillermo Julian de la Fuente, Peter Carl, Stephen Deger, Judith DeMaio, Clyde Carpenter, and Herb Greene, Koch has created a body of work in the Ohio River Valley that is site-specific and expressive, translating Kentucky's regional idioms into a vibrant modernism. From airy houses that take advantage of Louisville's Olmstead-designed parks and local materials, to structures that are strikingly adapted to the Ohio River floodplain, to church-inspired metropolitan projects, Koch's buildings are a memorable part of the city's landscape. Close to Home presents the award-winning achievements of his firm Michael Koch and Associates Architects, and introduces readers to the simple elegance of his designs and meaningful contributions he has made to the architecture of Kentucky.

[.en] The Berlin-based photo artist Arina Dähnick follows in the footsteps of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in her study of city life and urbanity, the contrasts of inside and outside, of blurriness and focus, reflections and mirror images, and plays with the viewer’s perception. She discovered van der Rohe's architecture in the fall of 2012, when, after a thunderstorm, she perceived the Neue Nationalgalerie in a both fascinating and paradoxical spatial experience of boundless vastness—and a simultaneous feeling of being held. From then on she photographed the building under various conditions until its closure in 2015, following in Mies van der Rohe’s footsteps from Berlin to Brno, from Chicago to New York. She captured his most famous buildings—including the Villa Tugendhat, the Seagram Building, and the Lake Shore Drive Apartments—in impressive photo series that conveys her creative inspiration as well as the fascinating spatial experience of the architecture itself. ‘Architectural Portraits. The MIES Project’ will be presented at the S. R. Crown Hall and the Goethe Institut in 2019, in parallel with this year’s edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The exhibition will subsequently travel to Barcelona, Brno, and Berlin.
