“Colossus,” “visionary,” “giant” are superlatives used in the mid-twentieth century to describe Edward Durell Stone (1902–1978), a celebrity architect whose wholly unique modern aesthetic of “new romanticism” played a crucial role in defining middle-class culture.

Framed between the Great Depression and the oil embargo of the early 1970s, the distinguished career of the native Arkansan is represented on four continents, in thirteen foreign countries, and in thirty-two states—his masterpiece the American Embassy chancery (1953–59) in New Delhi, India. Recognized in his prime as one of the nation’s most sought-after architects, Stone’s vast and prestigious workload brought prosperity on a scale rare in architecture in his time; after the death of Frank Lloyd Wright, some supporters thought Stone seemed destined to take the place of his personal hero and close friend as the great national architect.

But Stone also drew divergent reactions. Such International Style buildings as his Museum of Modern Art (1935–39) in New York City, an austere, unornamented volume, won critical approval; in contrast, his monumental postwar architecture—the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (1958–71) in Washington, DC, among the best known—exposed popular tastes by offering a broader definition of Modernism inclusive of decoration.

Enhanced interest in Stone’s architecture has been spurred by the reconsideration of a number of his buildings. The former Gallery of Modern Art (1958–64) at 2 Columbus Circle in New York City, which was lost to a near complete makeover, stimulated vigorous and at times contentious discussion that made evident the need for an objective reassessment. His legacy—of giving form to the aspirations of the emerging consumer culture and of reconciling Modernism with the dynamism of the age—is established in “Edward Durell Stone: Modernism’s Populist Architect”.

#books #town_planning | The making of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

The making of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park / by John C. Hopkins, Peter Neal.
John Wiley & Sons, Chichester, West Sussex [etc.] : 2013

This is the story of The Making of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park by the Olympic Delivery Authority. Situated in east London adjacent to Victoria Park, one of the world’s earliest public parks built in the 19th century, the Park provides an innovative blueprint for contemporary urban park design and is recognised as an exemplar sustainable development for the 21st century. As a primary legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Park was conceived as a new piece of sustainable city, transforming a largely neglected, contaminated, post-industrial district, into a new community for up to 20,000 residents, shifting the centre of gravity of London eastwards.

Written by those at the heart of the project, it draws significantly on contributions from the many experts who have shaped and guided the creation of the Park, including interviews with the key players responsible for delivering the project. It provides the only authoritative account of the planning, design and construction of the Park beginning with the bid to host the games, setting out its historical, philosophical and physical context; describing the strategic fit within the Thames Gateway, Lower Lea Valley and Stratford City; explaining how One Planet Living principles developed by WWF and BioRegional underpinned sustainability throughout the project; and concludes with a ‘Walk in Park’ capturing its essence for both Games and Legacy.

Richly illustrated, it is a unique reference for those involved in the planning, design, delivery and management of sustainable urban parks and new communities on post-industrial and other land, and those seeking to host future Games and other large-scale international events.

John Hopkins DipLA MLA FLI ASLA is a landscape architect, environmental planner and urban designer. He was project sponsor for the parklands and public realm at the Olympic Delivery Authority from 2007 to 2011 and is currently visiting professor of landscape architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Greenwich.

[.eus] Argitalpen honek turismoaren eta kultur ondarearen arteko loturari heltzen dio, azken hamarkadetan elkarlotura maila garrantzitsua duten sistema horien arteko ari, hain zuzen. Azken urteetan, gainera, lotura hori asko areagotu da honako eslogana medio: “ondarea + turismoa = garapena”. Egoera ekonomiko ona aldeko, politikariek, agente sozioekonomikoek eta kultur eragileek museo eta ondare espazio berriak egiteko apustua egin dute, edota kultur ondasunen balioa agerian jartzeko sustapena egin dute; hori guztia, turistak erakartzeko. Baina, eslogan horretan aurkeztutako formula ez da dirudien bezain sinplea, arazo bat baino gehiago sortu dezakeelako. Turismo, museo eta ondare sistemak konplexuak dira, horien arteko lotura bezalaxe. Agente askok eta askotarikoek parte hartzen dute sistema horien barnean, euren balore eta interesen arabera, eta horren ondoriozko konplexutasunaren gainean idatzitako artikuluak jasotzen dira argitalpen honetan.
