Boris Iofan is best known as the architect behind the Palace of the Soviets. Yet his style was not limited to the ­Socialist ­Classicism that flourished under Stalin. Ishigami’s design for the Serpentine Pavilion 2019 takes inspiration from roofs, the most common architectural feature used around the world.The design of pavilion is made by arranging slates to create a single canopy roof that appears to emerge from the ground of the surrounding park.Within, the interior of the Pavilion is an enclosed cave-like space, a refuge for contemplation. For Ishigami, the Pavilion articulates his ‘free space’ philosophy in which he seeks harmony between man-made structures and those that already exist in nature.

[.en] Donald Judd (1928-94) was closely connected to Switzerland. From the early 1970s until his death, the American artist produced significant exhibitions there; more importantly, though his residences in Marfa and New York are legendary, less well-known is the hotel at Eichholteren which Judd transformed into an extraordinary residence on the banks of Lake Lucerne that tests the tensions and affinities between Swiss architecture and Judd's doctrines. Judd also collaborated with Swiss industrial firms to produce numerous artworks and design pieces, notably the Menziken Pieces. This new volume sheds light on the artist's collaborations with Swiss manufacturing firm Alu Menziken AG, and other Swiss companies. Donald Judd & Switzerland also examines the artist's continuing influence in Swiss art and design. In addition, Judd's contemporaries in Switzerland offer an expanded picture of Judd's Swiss years.

L'architettura in Italia tra le due guerre, suddivisa in due sezioni cronologiche corrispondenti ai decenni 1920-30 e 1930-40. Una serie di saggi e un ampio apparato illustrativo caratterizzano questo volume, concepito in occasione della mostra “Il razionalismo e l’architettura in Italia durante il Fascismo” allestita alla Biennale di Venezia del 1976. L’argomento è l’architettura in Italia tra le due guerre, suddiviso in due sezioni cronologiche corrispondenti ai decenni 1920-30 e 1930-40. Nella prima è analizzata – considerando tre aree culturali “campione”, Milano, Torino e Roma – la presenza di una cultura di ambito “cittadino” parallelamente al diffondersi del linguaggio “razionalista”. La seconda ha invece una scansione per temi – l’abitazione, i grandi concorsi nazionali, i centri storici, gli edifici pubblici per il regime, la Roma “imperiale” e, infine, il territorio e le città di fondazione – che vuole evidenziare la funzione totalizzante della cultura fascista nelle sue applicazioni pratiche, in quanto committente delle opere più importanti che dovevano essere ideologicamente rappresentative.

Il libro è dedicato all'opera architettonica di Luigi Snozzi, architetto svizzero dal linguaggio colto ed essenziale. Il linguaggio di Snozzi è quello asciutto e colto dell’architettura ticinese. Nato a Mendrisio nel 1932, rifiuta qualsiasi eccesso retorico in nome dell’essenzialità. Le sue prime costruzioni, risalenti agli anni Sessanta, sono definite “neorealiste” da Kenneth Frampton, autore in questo volume del saggio che ripercorre le tappe principali della sua carriera. Segue lo scritto di Vittorio Gregotti “Sulle tracce dell’architettura”, in cui il radicalismo di Snozzi viene messo a confronto con il rifiuto di ogni “illusionismo stilistico-conciliativo” catteristico del metodo di Alvaro Siza. Infine il catalogo delle opere dal 1957 al 1984, la cui suddivisione è scandita da brevi frasi dello stesso Snozzi; emergono con chiarezza l’attenta analisi dei fenomeni urbani e paesaggistici, nonché il rapporto dialettico con Kahn e con le più importanti esperienze coeve dell’architettura internazionale: “Il progetto, prima che strumento di trasformazione, è strumento di conoscenza”.

Una documentata selezione di progetti e realizzazioni dell'architetto milanese dall'allestimento della XIII Triennale del 1964 al rigorismo compositivo degli anni ottanta. Il presente volume raccoglie una selezione dei progetti e delle realizzazioni di Vittorio Gregotti, a partire dall’allestimento per la XIII Triennale del 1964 fino alle proposte degli anni settanta ed ottanta, che segnano il rinnovato approccio dell’architetto milanese ai problemi del linguaggio e della progettazione su grande scala. L’interesse che Gregotti è venuto maturando per le implicazioni formali e concettuali delle relazioni esistenti tra ogni opera architettonica e il relativo contesto urbano o territoriale rappresenta l’ultima tappa di una ricerca che, come chiarisce Manfredo Tafuri nel brillante saggio che apre il volume, dal “curioso” approda a un “rigorismo compositivo” di grande coerenza. Dedicato ad uno degli interpreti maggiori della cultura progettuale italiana, il volume rappresenta nel suo complesso un’occasione per conoscere e valutare non solo un’esperienza individuale di assoluto prestigio, ma si pone anche quale utile strumento per cogliere aspetti primari delle complesse vicende vissute dall’architettura contemporanea in Italia.

Vittorio Gregotti is one of the best known architects of his generation in Italy. Beginning in the 1950s, Gregotti produced many large-scale housing projects, supermarkets and department stores for the Italian chain La Rinascente, college campuses (including Florence, Calabria, and Palermo), as well as graphic design for Ferrari, museum interiors, furniture, and an extensive body of writing. This volume presents over 110 of Gregotti's projects from his early years with Architetti Associati, through the founding in 1974 of Gregotti Associati, the 1986 founding of the Campo design company, and his current work. Photographs, plans, sketches, and models are accompanied by Gregotti's own writings, which elucidate his commitment to historicism, his concern with the environment, and his vast polemics.

Come scrive lo stesso Gregotti nell'introduzione, "negli ultimi quarant'anni, la trasformazione più significativa derivante dalla critica positiva della modernità nell'architettura è stata il riconoscimento dell'importanza di tener conto del contesto - storico e geografico - nonché di specifici elementi significativi del sito. Il moderno progetto architettonico diventa quindi consapevole della sua stessa natura, un dialogo tra l'esistente e le modifiche che farà. " Questo libro cerca quindi risposte ai problemi posti dal progetto urbano e più in generale dalle trasformazioni che ha subito l'attuale contesto fisico. Tali riflessioni non sono esclusivamente teoriche e sono supportate da esempi di progetti architettonici che riflettono i diversi modi di costruire una nuova città "a partire dalla città stessa e dalla sua storia". Gregotti è guidato dalla convinzione che è sempre possibile "per la cultura della pianificazione urbana e territoriale proporre un nuovo stato di equilibrio", basato sul "riordino e chiarezza, che sono gli strumenti più importanti dell'architettura ".

Curato da Vittorio Gregotti e Giovanni Marzari, il volume analizza l'opera completa di Luigi Figini e Gino Pollini. Firmano gli interventi raccolti nel volume, accanto ai curatori, Marida Talamona, Alessandra Muntoni, Ornella Selvafolta, Cristina Bianchetti. Il testo raccoglie inoltre testimonianze di Ludovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso, Ignazio Gardella, Gae Aulenti e altri esponenti del mondo culturale e artistico italiano.

Un sodalizio durato tutta una vita: Figini e Pollini, due figure chiave nell'architettura italiana del Novecento. A partire dal 1926 si forma il sodalizio intellettuale tra gli architetti Luigi Figini e Gino Pollini. Di origine milanese il primo e roveretana il secondo, sin dagli anni della formazione universitaria i due danno vita a una ricerca destinata ad imporsi per originalità e coerenza nel panorama dell’architettura italiana del Novecento. Il volume, pubblicato la prima volta in occasione della retrospettiva dei due architetti al Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, esce ora nella seconda edizione con nuova veste grafica. Prende in esame l’intera produzione architettonica dei due maestri, dalle opere realizzate nei primi anni Trenta – la “casa elettrica” di Monza, la villa-studio costruita per la Triennale del 1933 – ai progetti per la Olivetti di Ivrea, agli edifici milanesi degli anni della ricostruzione postbellica.
