[.en] Kengo Kuma is a globally acclaimed Japanese architect whose prodigious output possesses an inherent respect and value of materials and environment, often creating a harmonious balance between building and landscape. He masterfully engages both architectural experimentation and traditional Japanese design with twenty-first-century technology, resulting in highly advanced yet beautifully simple, gentle, human-scaled buildings. He's renowned for the drive to search for new materials to replace concrete and steel, seeking a new approach for architecture in a post-industrial society, and fusing interior and exterior realms to make spaces that both create a calming and tranquil atmosphere and which "transform" topography. In the pages of this exquisitely illustrated volume, Kuma presents close to forty of his most recognized and award-winning works, including FRAC Marseille, V&A Dundee, Mont-Blanc Base Camp, and Japan National Stadium. Kuma continues to forge a new design language: in this book he offers the reader deep insight into how he has engaged with different aspects of the architectural discipline by transforming topography, construction, and representation in order to give further progress to his ideas.

[.en] This book focuses on over twenty buildings that were designed solely by Louis Kahn. From his native city of Philadelphia to the heart of Bangladesh, Kahn’s architecture reflected his fascination with science, mathematics, history, and nature. Striking new interior and exterior photographs by esteemed architectural photographer Cemal Emden reveal the characteristic features of Kahn’s aesthetic: juxtaposed materials, repetition of line and shape and geometric precision. Also evident is the way Kahn’s designs flourish in a variety of settings—religious, governmental, educational, and residential. The book gives close attention to Kahn’s most iconic buildings, including Erdman Hall at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania; the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad; the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka, Bangladesh; and the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut, as well as a cluster of residences he designed in the Philadelphia area. Chapter openers written by architecture professor Caroline Maniaque, an introduction by academic Jale Erzen and an extensive chronology by academic Zekiye Abali, as well as a selection of Kahn’s most insightful statements complete this book, which allows for a rich understanding of Kahn’s architectural ingenuity.

The architecture of Louis Kahn (1901-74) transformed everyday materials such as concrete and brick into buildings akin to sacred monuments. In other words, he designed sublime structures that hold us in wonder. Born in the Russian Empire (now Estonia), Kahn emigrated to the United States with his family in 1906. Yet, despite completing his architectural training in Pennsylvania in 1924, Kahn was in his 50s by the time he found his own distinctive style. His designs for religious, governmental, educational and residential buildings all demonstrate his insistence on the juxtaposing of materials and the use of repetition, as well as geometric precision. His buildings emerged across the world, from his hometown of Philadelphia to Ahmedabad in India and Dhaka in Bangladesh.

The Essential Louis Kahn focuses on 23 buildings designed solely by him and includes a rich and extensive visual element in the form of previously unpublished photographs by the esteemed architectural photographer Cemal Emden. Indeed, Emden’s photographs are present in abundance and give a strong sense of Kahn’s vision for the spaces he designed. Punctuating the book are statements by Kahn which help to formalise his position on, among other things, form, design, space, materials and light. There are a number of additional contributions in the form of essays and other texts by Caroline Maniaque, a professor of architecture, and Jale Erzen and Ayşe Zekiye Abali, both academics.

Erzen’s introductory text presents us with the tenets of Kahn’s architecture. In 10 or so pages, Erzen addresses his career through these tenets, giving us a good feel for Kahn’s approach, his underlying architectural philosophy and what was important to him. Kahn’s architecture is described here as “an integrated union of space and mass, solid and void”, and that certainly seem like a useful way to summarise his concerns. With integration comes a wholeness of being and buildings that can be understood in monumental terms. Many of Kahn’s building begin with a central core that is protected by surrounding structures. The core is enveloped, lending privacy and safeguarding its special atmosphere.

It is difficult to know which of the 23 buildings featured in this publication to mention here. However, Kahn’s Salk Institute for Biological Studies (1959-65) in La Jolla, San Diego, California caught my attention. Its position on the edge of a canyon with cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean is a commanding one. The photographs of this medical research laboratory show buildings grouped together with adjoining pavilions, and acute attention to the presence of light and waterways, waterfalls and pools. Kahn explained: “The rainwater, scarce as it is, is gathered in a cistern and then sent up to a higher point where it is distributed by gravity, and these pools are linear and shaded by trees so that evaporation does not too quickly occur.” In this way, Kahn’s design was sensitive to the local climate and weather.

In his designs for Phillips Exeter Academy Library (1965-72) in Exeter, New Hampshire, Kahn was sensitive to the locale too, but in a different way. In his “Comments on the Library” in 1972, he explained how a long-established local brickyard, about to go out of business, was brought to his attention. He loved the irregularity of the bricks and two million were supplied for the building of the library. As well as local bricks, the library also boasts large plate-glass windows and a covered walkway. Inside the building, wooden structures are used to create reading desks and study carrels, each with a small window and shutters. The use of raw materials, textures and geometric design also feature the circle within a square motif that is common to many of Kahn’s designs.

Yale University Art Library (1951-53) in New Haven, Connecticut, includes what Kahn called a “breathing ceiling” in which he housed ventilation, pipes and cables. It features an uninterrupted interior space (made possible by the increased span of the tetrahedral ceiling structure), glazed facades and materials left to show their raw surface finish. This feat of form and materials is a deliberate strategy to draw attention to the building and its construction. As Kahn wrote in 1955: “The formwork was made from floor to floor, and this line was accented in the design; because what we tried to do in the expression of the building was to show in every way how it was built.”

What of Kahn’s residential projects? Between 1943 and 1973, Kahn designed about 30 houses, although only half of these were built. In 1961, he reflected that a “house is the abstract characteristic of spaces good to live in” and that “home is the house and the occupants”. Still, Kahn’s residential projects were not entirely separate from his public works. The two strands of his work ran in parallel, influencing one another as his ideas progressed from project to project. The houses photographed in the book are mostly in Pennsylvania. From the Jesse and Ruth Oser House (1940-42) to the Norman and Doris Fisher House (1960-67), and those in between, they are all houses that invite us in.

I have to mention the Franklin D Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park (1973-2012) in New York City. Kahn had been asked to design a memorial to Roosevelt in 1972. He said: “I had this thought: that a memorial should be a room and a garden.” His idea was of a garden as personal and a room as an extension of self, hence their suitability for a memorial. The project was halted following Kahn’s death in 1974 and not continued until much later, finally being completed in 2012. Emden’s photographs reveal it as a phenomenal space on Roosevelt Island in the middle of the East River. Despite being completed by other architects, it is a testament to Kahn’s belief in the emotional power of abstraction as enormous blocks of white granite construct a roofless outdoor room, still, contemplative and monumental.

In this book, it is Emden’s photographs and Kahn’s words that provide the greatest insights, enriching our understanding of Kahn’s approach to architecture. Still, the contemporary texts by Erzen, Maniaque and Abali function as helpful bridges between Kahn’s architectural philosophy and Emden’s architectural photographs. In this way, they help us to navigate ideas and spaces. Ultimately, it is the images that entice, introducing us to buildings we may wish to visit when we can.

[.en] This second monograph represents circumstances and projects which have occurred beyond the span of David Hansen's original monograph. Through sketches, diagrams, rendering, photographs and narratives, this book portrays the criteria and conceptual thinking that was primary in finding an inclusive architectural solution for a diverse selection of projects. Though, Hansen has always attempted to create a comprehensive matrix of interrelated design criteria on his client's vision, site, context, sustainability, climate, culture and tradition, some issues must be weighted above others. And sometimes, a story must be told that is inexorably tied to the essence of the land or building. These commentaries can even provide deeper meaning than the determinants of the building themselves.

[.en] The presented residential projects in Vienna originated from a desire to develop living concepts that strengthen the sense of community and contribute to a society based on solidarity - building groups and participative projects, neighbourhood homes, temporary or permanent social forms of living and working for marginalised groups such as the homeless. Private homes can be downsized if there are more communal spaces. This reduces the need for land and property and gives the community room for leisure and other opportunities. Ulrike Schartner and Alexander Hagner from gaupenraup+/- explain the starting point and strategies of their work. Robert Temel and Isabella Marboe present the development of communal forms of building and living based on important precursors and trends.

[.en] Timber has evolved from a traditional building material to ‘mass timber’, an engineered high- performance product from which complete construction systems and even high-rise buildings can be made. Tomorrow’s Timber, written by Pablo van der Lugt, shows how mass timber has the potential to usher an ecological, technical, and well-being revolution in the way we build.

In Tomorrow’s Timber, new timber innovations are explored, including the materials, products, elements and complete building systems, providing context for this emerging shift in design and construction. Inspiring case studies worldwide show that the mass timber revolution is happening as we speak. Tomorrow’s Timber contextualizes the challenges and how forests and mass timber can help solve our global problems by mitigating climate change while supporting the move to a less resource dependent, circular bio-based economy. Finally, the book tackles real mass timber design opportunities and challenges on building and site level, before providing a promising outlook towards the future.

Tomorrow’s Timber is an informative and important resource for those committed to restoring our balance with the planet while serving the necessities of humankind. Abundantly illustrated, Tomorrow’s Timber covers all the above topics based on the latest scientific insights and statistics and lessons learned from practice.

[.en] This book explains both the origin and evolution of Miralles' system of representation, from his time as a student at the Barcelona School of Architecture to the latest projects he designed with Benedetta Tagliabue, including the heroic period with Carme Pinos. With previously unpublished drawings from the architect, it demonstrates on a fundamental level how the evolution of representation runs parallel to that of architecture, thus illustrating its indissolubility and mutual interdependence.0It is impossible to dissociate the evolution of the architecture of Enric Miralles from the development of his own system of representation. Beginning from a position inherited from his training at the Barcelona School of Architecture and his practice at the office of Viaplana-Pinon, where he acquired a liking for precision in drafting and a graphic style based exclusively on lines of the same thickness, Miralles soon developed a method defined by a customised use of orthographic projections, connected to a fragmented conception of the architectural plan and space itself.

Escola Massana, de Carme Pinós //

All hail the groundbreaking women in architecture.

International Women’s Day is upon us and publisher Hatje Cantz prepares to launch a new book – ‘Women in Architecture’ – celebrating just that: the amazing female architects of past, present and future.
Ellie Stathaki | Wallpaper, 2021-03-06
https://www.wallpaper.com/architecture/women-in-architecture-book-hatje-cantz-2021

German publisher Hatje Cantz’s latest book follows up on the much-needed current debate about the role of women in architecture. Coming at a critical time, with reports of women being especially hard hit by the pandemic making headlines, and just in time for the 2021 International Women’s Day, ‘Women in Architecture’ highlights the amazing female architects of past, present and future.

The new title reaches far and wide across the globe and picks 36 internationally acclaimed women who have made their mark in the world of architecture. Names include Odile Decq, Elke Delugan-Meissl, Manuelle Gautrand, Annette Gigon, Itsuko Hasegawa, Anna Heringer, Anupama Kundoo, Lu Wenyu, Dorte Mandrup, Farshid Moussavi, Carme Pinós, Kazuyo Sejima, Annabelle Selldorf and Nathalie de Vries.

Far from being a ‘simple’ listing of the achievements, awards and projects of this incredible bunch, the book delves deep into the history of the role women have played in the architecture scene. Essays from the book’s author, German historian, curator and lecturer Ursula Schwitalla, as well as contributors including Odile Decq and Beatriz Colomina, explore the past and architecture’s painful lack of female representation.

The book names women that have been active in architecture and building since the Middle Ages – such as Katherine Briçonnet (1494-1526), key to the design of the Château de Chenenceau, and Plautilla Bricci (1616–1705), the first professional female architect recorded in Rome. It covers the Industrial Revolution and extends through the 20th century, with more well-known examples, such as the women of the Bauhaus.

The historical essays and texts dedicated to prominent representatives of the past, such as Zaha Hadid and Eileen Gray, are followed by a rich portfolio show of each of the 36 living architects included in the book. Spanning continents and building typologies, this book is not about a single aesthetic style or even a specific overall conceptual approach; rather, it pays tribute to the undoubtable rich variety, powerful achievements and enormous potential the women in architecture have to offer.

[.en] This article looks at women’s vocations in architecture through the personal experience of Matilde Ucelay, Spain’s first female architect. To this aim, the first section provides a brief biographical note on the life and work of Matilde Ucelay: her initial vocation within her artistic and intellectual social milieu; the court martials and professional purges she underwent after the civil war in the 1940s; her full professional dedication to architecture during 40 years at a time when women did not have legal rights, as a solo professional who specialized in designing homes for the upper bourgeoisie in Madrid. The second section of the article looks at a number of relevant issues identified in the emerging literature on women in the architectural profession, and addresses them through Ucelay’s personal experience, situated in space and time. A first question relates to the concentration of the activity of female architects in the residential sector, and whether this is the result of active decision or of structural factors setting limits on their professional action. Another issue addresses whether women architects contribute a different vision to the residential project, and the case being, what this different approach to design can be and in what it materializes. Finally, the article explores the material, spatial and temporal conditions under which such work is carried out: that is, how the vocation for architecture is made compatible with private life.
